QUEEN’S WIN NATIONAL LIFEGUARD COMPETITION

Toronto (March 17, 2008) – Queen’s University captured the 100th Anniversary Canadian Lifeguard Emergency Response Championship last week in Toronto.

Queen’s fielded four teams in the competition which included 27 teams from five provinces and 12 clubs.  It consisted of three simulated emergency events which teams had to compete in.

The victory came after Queen's won the University Lifeguard Championships in Ottawa on January 26 which club president and head coach Alvin Tedjo said carried the team into the national finals.

"Usually powerhouses like the City of Ottawa and Toronto dominate this competition, so the fact Queen's could ride the momentum of the university title and win the national championship as well is overwhelming,” said Tedjo.  “We did not expect to win but the victory is a sign of hard we worked and how well we performed."

Queen’s placed well in the variety of events, with the Gaels placing top-four in each of the four events contested.  The Gaels four squads qualified for the final round of each event 11 out of a possible 12 times and helped the Gaels claim the tile earning 466 points – 66 points ahead of second place. The University of Waterloo were runner-up while The City of Mississauga, Town of Richmond Hill and the Vancouver Lifeguard Association rounded out the top five.

The Queen's University Lifeguard Club consists of competitors in first year, undergraduate studies, graduate studies, including Arts and Science, Nursing, Commerce, PHE, Education and Law.

The events were the Water Rescue; a simulated rescue scenario, requiring competitors to work as a team in lifeguard situations where volunteers fall 'victim' to predetermined conditions requiring lifeguard attention, the Priority Assessment; an intense disaster situation where competitors must work together to rescue over a dozen victims in a limited period of time from a hazardous situation and First Aid; an event designed to feature the first aid skills of competitors, who are given a scenario that requires treatment and careful triage skills in order to succeed.

Men's Volleyball Stays Put In CIS Top Ten
Kingston, Ont. (January 22, 2008) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's volleyball team are the only Tricolour squad to be in this week's edition of the Mitsubishi Motors CIS Top Ten Lists. The Gaels who re-entered the top ten last week at ninth did not move in this week's poll which is still topped by the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Queen's has won all four of their matches since the season resumed after the December break beating RMC and Ryerson last week. The Gaels winning streak has moved them into sole possession of third place in the OUA, four points behind second place Guelph in the race for one of the two first round playoff byes.

The McMaster Marauders who are first in the OUA with a 15-0 record are the only other Ontario team in the top ten moving from fourth to third as they remain the only undefeated team left in the country. Winnipeg at two, UBC in fourth and Laval round out the top five with Dalhousie, Thompson Rivers, Brandon and UNB completing the poll.

The Queen's women's track and field team fell out of this week's top ten list after being ranked for the first time this season at eighth last week despite a weekend in Ottawa where the team brought home five gold and three silver medals. The Gaels are on the road again this weekend as they travel to Montreal for the McGill Invitational at the site where this year's CIS Championships will be held in March.

INTRAMURAL BEWIC SPORTS DAYS TAKE OVER PHYSICAL EDUCATION CENTRE

Kingston, Ont. (January 17, 2008) - Over 1,000 students will invade the Physical Education Centre on campus starting on Friday afternoon for the annual two-day BEWIC Sports Days event.

The marathon of co-ed multi-sport tournament is over 20 years old and features 28 teams made up of Queen’s students participating in four sports.  This year competitors will compete in volleyball, rugby, basketball, ‘floor ball’ and inner-tube water-polo.  The event kicks off on Friday at 2:30pm and will run until Saturday night at 4:30pm.

Each registered team will compete in all sports and are guaranteed 12 games over the weekend, three in each sport as they try to accumulate points for the overall title.  The event culminates in a banquet on Saturday night. Major awards for Top Competitive Team, Top Sportsmanship Team and Overall Champion are all up for the taking.

“From an Intramurals point of view this is the Queen’s Super Bowl of all events,” said Duane Parliament, Coordinator of Intramurals and Summer Leagues at Queen’s Athletics and Recreation.  “We host a lot of competitors in a short amount of time and it’s by far our biggest weekend.”

The weekend is so well attended that Athletics and Recreation arrange for varsity level teams to be on the road each season and reserve all areas of the Physical Education Centre for this week’s competition.

Parliament adds that some faculties circle this event on their calendar every year as a way for spirit or team building.

When asked in one sentence how to describe the weekend he said:  “With over 1,000 students participating in such a short period of time it’s an event based on organized chaos... it’s something you have to see to believe.”

Gaels Crack National Top Ten In Men's Volleyball
Kingston, Ont. (January 15, 2008) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's volleyball and women's track and field teams broke into the top-ten national rankings while women's track and field improved two places as the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) released their weekly national rankings on Tuesday.

The Gaels men's volleyball team was ranked No. 9 for the first two weeks of the top ten in late October and reappear in ninth spot this week earning the nod as the only unranked squad to crack this week's Mitsubishi Motor Top Ten.

The McMaster Marauders who are the only undefeated team remaining in the CIS, are the only other OUA school making an appearance in the top-ten staying in fourth place. Alberta earned the top spot followed by Winnipeg and UBC. Dalhousie was ranked five, a team that topped the Gaels twice at York Excalibur Classic the first weekend of January.

Queen's women's track and field team moved up two positions into the eighth position after their strong showing at the Ottawa Super Meet last weekend.

Queen's was led by third-year long distance runner Leslie Sexton of Markham, Ont., who won the 3,000 metre race 13 seconds better than the CIS standard. Sexton's top time immediately qualified her for the CIS Championship at McGill University in early March. Her performance was also the fourth fastest in team history behind three former Gaels who all won OUA championship and two winning CIS Championships in the seasons in which they set their mark.

In all the Gaels won eight medals in the women's competition last weekend including a gold in the 1,500 metre by Leah Larocque of Kanata, Ont. and two silver medals from Veronica Catry of Kingston, Ont. who set a new school record in the 200 metre event.

Queen's Athletes In The News
Kingston, ON (July 23, 2007) - Two former Gaels were prominent on the national sports scene in the last few days with a current Tricolour athlete trying to build on his strong summer. First former Queen's rower Nathalie Maurer (North Vancouver, BC) was a member of Canada's women's quad team that won a gold medal on the final day of rowing at the Pan Am Games in Brazil. The Canadians took a close race on July 19th in Rio de Janeiro by less than half a second over the United States. Overall Canadian rowers picked up three gold, three silver and two bronze medals with Nathalie a double medalist, " This was my first experience to stand there and see the flag raised," she said, "It's exhilarating.".

Former Golden Gael All Canadian football player Brad Smith made his debut with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL Saturday night July 21st in Calgary against the Stampeders, a game Toronto lost 33-10. The Queen's career leader in touchdown catches (23) was drafted in the sixth round two months ago by the Argos and had spent the first three weeks of the season on the practise roster. Wearing #14, Brad got on the field in the fourth quarter and caught his first ever professional pass for 8 yards from quarterback Damon Allen. Toronto sees their next action this Thursday July 26th when they host the Montreal Alouettes at the Rogers Centre (7pm TSN).

Kingston native and fourth year Queen's long distance runner Braden Novakowski will be attempting to run a sub 4 minute mile this Tuesday night July 24th at Richardson Stadium. Athletics & Recreation Department Restructure
Kingston, ON - Queen's Chair of Athletics and Recreation, Leslie Dal Cin has announced an organizational restructure for Athletics and Recreation. The new structure moves Athletics and Recreation towards a platform to support the drive for excellence in both campus recreation and inter-university programming leading into the new Queen’s Centre, Tindall Field and Fields and Stadium renewal projects. The restructure centers around 5 key changes:

  1. The move to an integrated department combining programs and facilities.
  2. Realigning activities into 5 core business areas, led by a management team
  3. A commitment to pursuing customer service values
  4. The addition of new or refocused resources to improve programs and services
  5. The introduction of a Marketing, Communication and Event unit

The first key change in the organizational restructure is the amalgamation of programming and facilities and services to form one integrated department – Team Queen’s. As a result of the amalgamation, the Chair, Facilities and Services position has been eliminated and replaced by an Associate Director, Facilities and Business Development. Herb Steacy will assume this position continuing to oversee facility management. Herb will also take the departmental lead on logistics relating to the Queen’s Centre, Tindall Field and Field & Stadium facility development projects. In the business development aspect of the role, Herb will oversee a newly created Marketing, Communication and Events unit, utilizing his business expertise and acumen to enhance and explore revenue generation and diversification initiatives.

Athletics and Recreation will re-align staffing and resources around five (5) core service areas: Campus Recreation; Inter-university; Facility Operations and Services; Marketing, Communications and Events; and Finance and Administration. This organizational structure is underpinned by a staffing model that includes the introduction of a management team. Each of the five (5) core service areas will be lead by a Manager who will oversee the unit and be responsible for overall management and performance.

  • The Campus Recreation unit will bring together Campus Recreation, Intramurals, Instructional Programs, Recreation and Sport Clubs and Fitness and Lifestyle. In addition to the extensive list of current programs and activities operated this unit will begin to explore additional and varied opportunity to engage the Queen’s and Kingston communities in the months and years ahead as we head into the Queen’s Centre. A job posting for the Manager, Campus Recreation will be posted shortly.
  • Interuniversity Sport is a fairly well defined unit. A clear priority in the months ahead is to unify our coaching network providing additional support and resources to our coaches and talented athlete pool. Additional resources in this unit will include the introduction of a strength and conditioning coach to assist athletes in their physical preparation as well as the introduction of a Coordinator, Athlete Services to assist coaches and athletes in the athlete recruitment process and provide additional support resource to Golden Gael athletes. Leslie Dal Cin is pleased to name Janean Sergeant to lead this group, as the Manager, Inter-university Sport Program.
  • Recognizing the need to increase our revenue generating efforts in the years ahead, a Marketing, Communication and Events unit has been established bringing together the activities of : marketing, sponsorship, communications, sports information, event management, departmental fundraising and alumni engagement. This new unit will provide a coordinated effort with respect to the way in which we promote, profile, interact with others and manage our events. Dal Cin announced that Brad Greenwood, would assume the new role of Manager of Marketing, Communication and Events. Brad's expertise and enthusiasm in leading the Rock the Jock event and Meet and Greet with our basketball teams this past year, coupled with his knowledge of our programs and business expertise in the marketing and events area will provide a tremendous asset to Athletics and Recreation.
  • § Facilities Operations and Services is a well functioning unit so there are very few changes, the most significant being that this unit will take over the operation/management of the “Lower Deck”. Herb Steacy will continue to lead this unit.
  • Finance and Administration, Karen Pearce will lead our finance and administration team. In addition to overseeing all financial management services, this unit will assume departmental travel and purchasing activities.

There will be changes in the staffing model that will power the organizational structure. Individual responsibilities within each unit may change. Details on these changes will be communicated more fully as we transition in the new structure.

The changes outlined above will go into effect as of August 1.

It is an exciting time for Athletics and Recreation. The vision to pursue excellence in both our campus recreation and inter-university sport programs coupled with the development of Queen’s Centre, Tindal Field and Fields and Stadium projects will transform physical activity, healthy lifestyle recreation and sport on our campus. We are confident that the new organizational structure and staffing model places the department in the best possible position to support the drive for excellence in our activities and programs and will enhance the experience of our students, athletes, coaches and physical activity community.

John McFarlane Outgoing Chair of Queen's Athletics, John McFarlane, recognised by the OUA with the J. P. Loosemore Award

HUNTSVILLE, ON (May 11, 2006) - Departing Queen's Golden Gaels Director of Athletics John McFarlane prepares to leave his post at the Kingston-based university with the J. P. Loosemore Award in tow, the annual award recognizing an individual for their continued dedication and commitment to university sport. In his 29 years at Queen's, McFarlane has held numerous positions at the institution, including Chair of Athletics and Recreation for the past 11. The adjunct professor in Queen's School of Physical Education and Health Education has been a champion of advancing not only Golden Gael athletics but also strengthening the foundations of both the OUA and the CIS. His work as Chair of the OUA Constitution Committee has helped shape the league as it exists today. He also played an integral role in the successful effort to amalgamate the former OWIAA and OUAA into one, healthy sustainable organization.

"John has made a tremendous commitment to Queen's Athletics," says colleague Janean Sergeant, Queen's Interuniversity Co-Ordinator. "He has poured his heart and soul into each position within the department providing sound leadership in Recreation, Intramurals, Interuniversity and Facilities. We have truly benefited from his determination, insight and persistence. Queen's Athletics will find another Athletic Chair, but will have a difficult time in finding an individual who cares as much or who can actually fill John's shoes."

McFarlane played a significant role in gaining university-wide acceptance to begin construction of the new $230-million Queen's Centre, which commences ground-breaking this summer. One of his final duties was to take part in the OUA Task Force on Athletic Financial Awards to examine the scholarship structure within the league. McFarlane will retire at the end of August after almost three decades of service to the Queen's.

OUA Board Votes in Favour of Offering Athletic Financial Awards to
First-Year Student-Athletes

HUNTSVILLE, ON (May 10, 2006) – First-year student-athletes at Ontario University Athletics institutions will be getting some more help on the financial front when the 2007/08 season commences. The OUA’s Board of Directors voted 16-3 in favour of the league providing Athletic Financial Awards (AFAs) to entering student-athletes (individuals who have yet to complete two full semesters of study in one academic year at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport school they are attending). Entering students with an average of at least 80 per cent are eligible to receive up to $3,500 annually from their university to help with expenses for the school year.

“This is a significant day in OUA history,” said outgoing President David Dubois. “As a conference, we have always tried to attract the best and the brightest student-athletes out there and with the implementation of this new policy on the granting of Athletic Financial Awards, I believe we will see more of Canada’s best at the doorsteps of our 19 member schools.”

At the OUA’s Semi-Annual General Meeting held in Hamilton this past January, a motion was unanimously passed to strike a Task Force to investigate what has long been a contentious issue throughout the league. A survey of OUA member schools determined that the granting of awards to eligible entering student-athletes was the highest priority, prompting the Task Force to offer guidance on a new model.

“Though this debate has been going on for years, the Task Force was very aggressive in terms of proposing a new model for AFAs,” said Dubois. “We have had the support of the university presidents to examine this issue. It’s rewarding to know that in just four short months, we have made a proactive and positive change to our model. What this means is that some of our finest young student-athletes will see the OUA as a great option to help them advance from an academic and athletic standpoint.

The OUA has traditionally had a higher academic standard for returning student-athletes to meet in order to obtain an AFA. Returning students must maintain a 70 per cent average to be eligible. While the OUA Board of Directors felt there was a need to open up opportunities to entering students, it was imperative that the standards remain high, hence the 80 per cent minimum for those in their first year of university, which is also the standard requirement for entering students in the other regional associations.

In September of 2001, the OUA increased the maximum level of AFAs from $1,500 to $2,500. Last September, that figure was upped again to $3,500. The Task Force will continue to examine the maximum amount of AFAs and will report back to the Board of Directors at the January 2007 Semi-Annual General Meeting.

“For years, there was a stance among OUA members that offering too much in the way of AFAs would foster an athlete-first environment that is the norm at various American institutions,” said Dubois. “But it is clear that our student-athletes are intelligent, hard-working individuals in both the classroom and on the playing field. If first-year students can receive academic awards, then it only makes sense that those athletes who meet the strict requirements of our universities be rewarded for their achievements, as well.

“Given the time our entering student-athletes commit to both their school work and competing for a varsity program, they should be eligible to receive financial assistance.”

Comprised of 19 institutions, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is the governing body of university sport in Ontario. Each year 9,000 student-athletes compete for 40 provincial championships in 24 sports. For more information on Ontario University Athletics, please visit our web site at www.oua.ca.

John McFarlane Dr. Janice Deakin, Associate Vice-Principal and Acting Dean of Student Affairs, announces the Retirement of John McFarlane, Chair of Queen’s Athletics and Recreation.

KINGSTON, ON (April 4, 2006) After twenty-nine years of dedicated service to Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation, John McFarlane announced today that he is stepping down as Chair of Athletics and Recreation, and retiring from Queen’s University effective August 31, 2006. During his tenure with Queen’s Athletics, McFarlane has served in a variety of administrative positions which included interuniversity, recreation, intramurals and facility management capacities. For the past eleven years, he has served as the Chair of Queen’s Athletics and Recreation for the University. In addition, as an adjunct professor, McFarlane has taught within the School of Physical and Health Education in the Field of Sport and Recreation Management.

Over a period of twenty-one years he has served as head coach of the men’s and women’s interuniversity tennis teams and led Queen’s teams to eight provincial and one national team championship. McFarlane, himself a former varsity tennis player and team captain at Queen’s (1969-73), was an accomplished all-round athlete who excelled in racquet sports and captured four junior and adult Ontario championship titles. In addition to his coaching duties at Queen’s, John served as head coach for Team Ontario for four years, as well as serving two stints as Team Canada National Junior Team coach on South American and European tours. Local area junior players coached by McFarlane captured twenty-one Canadian National Singles and Doubles Championships.

In his role as Chair of Athletics and Recreation, McFarlane played a key role in gaining university wide acceptance to construct the new $230 million Queen’s Centre, which is slated for ground-breaking this Spring. The Queen’s Centre athletic and recreation facilities when completed will be a state of the art structure and among the finest in the country. Also slated for construction in the coming year will be the building of Queen’s first synthetic surfaced field located on main campus. A master-plan for a proposed new West Campus stadium and fields facility was proposed during his tenure as Chair, and is currently being reviewed by the Campus Planning and Development committee.

Dr. Janice Deakin goes on record as saying that “John’s contributions to athletics and recreation at Queen’s are many in number and profound in impact. He has provided a strong and respected voice on matters germane to Queen’s athletics locally, provincially and nationally. His expertise was essential and apparent through the development of the Queen’s Centre and West Campus stadium projects.”

As Chair, McFarlane championed the “Women’s Golden Gaels Awards” which were established to ensure gender equity principles were put into place for Queen’s athletic programs. He was also instrumental in providing direction for the establishment of the Golden Gaels Coaching Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was established in 2003 to recognize long serving Queen’s varsity coaches in a significant and permanent way.

At the provincial level, McFarlane was an active member of both the Ontario University Athletic Association (OUA) and at the national level with the Canadian University Sport (CIS) organizations. At the OUA level he chaired the OUA Constitution committee and played a key role in the amalgamation of the former OWIAA and the OUAA into today’s OUA. As Chair of the OUA Planning committee he led the charge for the development of the “New Sports Model” which currently serves as the framework for university sport in the province. In addition, John served for four years on the OUA Management committee and currently sits as a member of the OUA Task Force on Athletic Financial Awards (AFA) and as a member of the OUA Planning committee.

On the national level John, always an advocate of the “student-athlete,” spearheaded the drive and was successful in encouraging the CIS to accept a minimum academic standard for AFA’s across the country. He sat on the CIS Equity and Equality committee for three years and at present is a member of the Athletic Financial Awards committee as well as the CIS Research and Development committee.

John states that he is looking forward in his retirement to having more family time and an opportunity to travel, play golf, tennis and curl. McFarlane goes on record as saying “it has been a privilege to work as the Athletic Director at Queen’s and to have had the opportunity to work with so many quality coaches, student-athletes, fellow staff members and colleagues across the country.”

In closing, Dr. Deakin expresses her sentiment towards John McFarlane’s retirement announcement as “John has been my colleague since I joined the School of PHE. I am disappointed that he will not be here to experience the transition of the Queen’s Centre from a dream to our reality, but I understand and respect his desire to make more time for his family and his passion for playing golf! I will miss his insight, his sense of humour and his commitment to Queen’s University, the School of PHE and of course the Athletic and Recreation portfolio.”
