Code of Conduct:
As a game official, you represent the intramural program in a leadership capacity. It is your responsibility to be familiar with and adhere to the Intramural Code of Conduct. A copy will be given to you along with this contract.
Conduct of Play:
The primary intent of intramurals is safe and fun competition. As a game official, you are responsible for ensuring the safe participation of all individuals, including yourself. Eject any individual who subjects you or others to any form of abuse. If the game is getting out of hand, you may stop the game for a five-minute cooling off period. If things do not improve or get worse, you have the authority to end the game and both teams will receive a loss.
Each score card/sheet has a place where the game officials are to rank the teams in terms of their fair play and general conduct. Be sure you understand the categories and to fill this area in each and every game.
General Information:
Personal Bonds or Fees:
- It is mandatory that all officials attend the General All Officials meeting and the clinic sessions (general and sports specific) for each sport you are interested in officiating.
- Get to know the Chief Official for your sport(s) and the Officials Coordinator. Have their phone numbers and e-mail addresses handy.
- All protective equipment for officials and refs jerseys can be signed out at the Equipment Service counter.
- Tips and Expectations:
- Be well acquainted with the rules pertaining to your sport, especially any rules particular to Queen’s Intramurals.
- Attend the officials clinics for your sport(s).
- Attend any subsequent meetings as required by your sport Chief Official or Officials Coordinator
- BE CONSISTENT
- ENSURE THE TONE OF THE GAME CONFORMS TO OUR STANDARDS of FAIR PLAY, SAFETY and the CODE OF CONDUCT
- Discuss the rules and the way you will call them with BOTH managers before the game begins. Remember: An official who shows respect, gets respect.
- Sign up for games as per standard procedure.
- Show up at least 10 minutes before the scheduled game time. You are responsible to find a replacement for any games you are scheduled to ref. DO NOT EXPECT THE CHIEF OFFICIAL TO FIND A REPLACEMENT FOR YOU. Do let the CO know that you will not be doing the game and provide the name of your replacement. The list of approved officials for each sport is in the Student Intramural Office.
- Pick up the game score cards/sheets prior to your game(s) from Room 203 and return them (filled out correctly!) to the appropriate box outside Room 203.
- Ensure both managers fill out the game cards correctly, and that ALL participants sign the scorecard. This is important for eligibility purposes. At some point in the game, COUNT THE BODIES in the game and compare it to the number of names on the scorecard. If there is a discrepancy, ask the manager to clarify who is missing/extra. Only players at the game should be on the gamesheet.
- Print your name AND sign the card. This is your proof that you worked the game and is our check for payment. (Your signature should be legible).
- The dress code for officials consists of black, navy or grey pants and an officials’ jersey. Jerseys can be signed out from the Equipment Service counter.
Inclement Weather:
Call the Intramural Hot Line (533-6000 ext. 75036) after 4 p.m. Or stop by Room 203.
