General Rules of Operation

All male students at Queen’s have the right to take part in the Men’s Intramural program, more commonly referred to as ‘BEWS’. Participation in the men’s program is organized on the basis of faculty, thus all participants must compete with their designated Intramural competition unit. Approximately twenty-four activities are offered in the men’s program, ranging from recreational activities to competitive leagues such as basketball and hockey. In addition, several coed sports are available in the BEWIC program for those who are interested.

Athletic Sticks

There shall be at least one Athletic Stick elected by the student society within each academic faculty or school to represent that unit on the Intramural Assembly. The primary responsibility of Athletic Sticks is to organize the students in their academic faculty for participation in Intramural activities and to act as the liaison person between the students and the Intramural office. Although each unit may have several year or discipline reps on the Intramural Assembly, only one vote per unit will be allowed on all issues. See the "Sticks & Managers" link in the menu at left for the specific duties of sticks.

BEWS Competition Units

All faculties and schools compete as single units in the men’s program and are allowed one voting member per unit on the Intramural Assembly unless they, themselves, apply in writing to divide and create a new unit. The BEWS competition units and their scheduling numbers are outlined in the table below:

Combining Units: Units may be combined for the purpose of fielding a team in a particular sport and thereby provide an opportunity for individuals to participate when they may otherwise have been denied the chance. In these instances two or three sub-units may be combined to field a team.

  • Traditional combinations first (eg. Meds and Rehab)
  • Faculty combinations next (eg. 1st year and 2nd year Law)
  • Any other combination (eg. Meds and Law ‘04)

It is the responsibility of the Athletic Stick to ensure that entry forms are marked COMPLETE ENTRY or PARTIAL ENTRY upon submission to the Intramural office. The Scheduling Convenors will combine teams based on numbers of participants listed on the entry form. If only one unit requests a combined team, there will obviously be no other team available with which to combine. As a result, the participants in that unit will not be able to participate in that particular Intramural sport.

NOTE: The Scheduling Coordinators, in cooperation with the Intramural Coordinator, will have the ultimate authority when it comes to combining units.

Entry Limits

In most BEWS Team Sports, the entry limit will be 24 teams. The maximum team entry limit is extended in the following sports: Hockey, Soccer (outdoor) & Basketball - entry limit of 32 teams (includes both Tier I and II in hockey)

In all sports, each of the 21 existing competition units are guaranteed one team entry if they enter by the deadline date. Each unit also has the option of entering a second (or third) team if interest is sufficient to support additional teams. After each unit entering teams has had one team accepted, the remaining spots in the league/tournament (up to the entry limit of 24 or 32 teams) will be available to units wanting second teams. These spots will be allocated on a lottery basis. No unit will be permitted to have a third team in a given sport before all requests for second teams have been accommodated. NO OPEN TEAMS WILL BE ACCEPTED IN THE BEWS LEAUGES (the only exception is the Soccer Magic indoor soccer league which is an open league).

The lottery for spots in the league will be carried out by the Scheduling Coordinators and the Intramural Coordinator or Intramural Assistant.

REC and Competitive Leagues

BEWS hockey is divided in two tiers ( I & II ). Units may enter teams in both divisions. The number of spots available in each division in any given year, will be dictated by the amount of interest expressed (ie. number of entries) for each division. It is the responsibility of the Intramural Coordinator and Hockey Chief Official to ensure that a balance of opportunity between divisions is maintained.

In years where recreation and competitive divisions are offered: Units are only guaranteed one entry per sport, when they want a team in both the rec and competitive divisions, the Athletic Stick must clearly indicate on the entry form which team (ie. rec or competitive) is their guaranteed entry for that sport. If nothing is marked on the entry form, the Intramural Office will automatically assume that the entry is a REC team. All other team entries from that unit will automatically be included in the lottery for spots (if applicable) in the appropriate division. If the unit is unsuccessful in getting a team in the other division via the lottery, all students in the unit must be allowed to compete with the guaranteed entry.

It is the responsibility of the Athletic Stick to submit a finalized copy of the rec and competitive team rosters to the Intramural Office before the team’s second game. They must also ensure that the appropriate team managers have an accurate listing of the players on their team. If there is any uncertainty as to which team a player belongs to, the scorecard will be utilized to determine which team (rec or competitive) the student played with in their first game.

Teams in the recreational or Tier II division will not earn points towards the James G. Bews Trophy however they will be awarded points for Participation Standings (John Paul Memorial Cup). Individual participants will also be able to earn championship awards.

Players MAY NOT play in both Rec and Competitive or Tier I and II divisions of a given sport.

Multiple Entries

If a unit enters more than one team per sport in a given division, each team will be given an alphabetical letter after the unit’s scheduling number, eg. 1A and 1B. It is the responsibility of the Athletic Stick to submit a copy of the team rosters for each team to the Intramural Office and to post one for the players’ reference. If there is any uncertainty as to which team a player belongs to, the scorecard will be utilized to determine which team (A or B) the student played with in their first game.

The following rules will apply to all units entering more than one team in a particular sport (regardless of division):

  • Players from the unit may compete with ONLY ONE of their unit teams

Example 1: If Mechanical has 2 ball hockey teams, Mech A (0A) and Mech B (0B), a student in Mechanical may play for either 0A or 0B but NOT BOTH.

Example 2: If Mechanical has a hockey team in both the Tier I and Tier II divisions, a student in Mechanical may play for either the Tier I or Tier II, but NOT BOTH.
  • Those units that enter two teams in a sport will be awarded the normal participation points, which will be divided equally between the two teams. Points for excellence will be awarded to the best team in the unit as determined at the conclusion of the playoffs. The 2nd team will hold their place in the standings but not receive the points for that placing.

    Example:
    Meds A: 750

    Mech: 600

    Meds B: -

    Mining: 450
  • A and B or Rec and Competitive entries for any one unit will be treated as separate entities in that sport. The standard system for defaults will apply to each individual team. (ie. A team is allowed one default but will be removed from the league if a second default occurs.)

Racquet Sports

Entries in racquet sports are limited to 6 entries per unit in singles events and 3 entries per unit in doubles events, for the purpose of awarding BEWS points. All other entrants beyond those numbers are placed into the draw as Independent entries.

Due to time and facility restrictions, tennis is treated as a special Racquet sport in which entry is restricted to a maximum of 6 individuals for singes and 3 teams for doubles, per unit. Only 6 independents in total are accepted into the draw.

Championship points earned by independent entrants will be awarded to the appropriate competition unit. No participation points are awarded to independents. Individual championships will be credited to the participant.

The sign-up sheets for Racquet sports will be posted on the Intramural bulletin boards at the entrance to the men’s locker room in the Physical Education Centre for at least 2 weeks prior to the closing date for entries. In addition, Athletic Sticks will be given Racquet sport sign-up sheets to post within their home building. These sheets must be submitted to the Intramural office by the designated entry deadlines in order to include these individuals in the draw.

Due to the number of students interested in racquet sports, the format of the tournament will usually be single elimination or consolation. The draw sheets will be posted on the Intramural bulletin boards in the Phys Ed Centre at least two school days prior to the start of competition. The dates by which each round of play must be completed will be clearly indicated on the draw sheets.

It is the responsibility of each participant in the event to find out who they play and to arrange a mutually convenient time to play their match prior to the posted deadline. It is the shared responsibility of both players to ensure that the match is played by the posted deadline date. Failure to do so will result in the double default of both opponents from the tournament. Difficulty contacting an opponent should be reported to the Racquet sport Convenor in plenty of time to avoid being credited with an undeserving default. These deadlines will be strictly enforced.

Participants must book their own courts (free of charge) according to the standard Physical Education Centre court booking procedures. Racquets are available from the Physical Education Centre Equipment Service Counter. Later in the fall, once the weather becomes a concern, tennis matches may be moved indoors to the Matchpoint Fitness Centre. Participants will be expected to pay a portion of the court fees to play tennis matches indoors.

The winner of each match will be responsible for submitting a completed scoresheet, indicating the results of the match, to the Convenor of the sport. Usually the convenor will post a pouch on the bulletin board, adjacent to the draw sheet, for completed scorecards.
