Kingston, ON (February 14, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's and women's wrestling team compete at the OUA Championships this weekend at the University of Toronto. The Gaels have been battling injury and illness the last couple of weeks but still have high hopes for this years provincial finals. Perennial medal contender Shannon Mullins leads on the women's side. Mullins has medaled at four exhibition meets this season in the women's 55 kilogram weight class, winning gold at the University of Toronto Invitational in December, winning silver at the Queen's Invitational and claiming bronze at the Toronto and Brock Opens. Shannon was the lone Gael wrestler to qualify for the CIS Championships last season finishing sixth in St. Catherines. She knows that to win gold she will have to find a way to defeat Kingston native and defending CIS Champion Terri McNutt of the University of Western Ontario. For the men Chris Levy is a key component in the 54 kilogram weight class. This season Levy had his best performance at the Queen's Open to win the title by defeating Western's Matt Steele in the final. His last exhibition meet two weeks ago at Western saw him win his first round match despite a broken hand before losing in the next match to defending CIS champion Jamie Macari of Brock. Eric Bertrand has also had an outstanding exhibition season for Queen's winning a bronze at the University of Toronto Invitational and defeating defending OUA medallist Leonard Payne of McMaster in the men's 120 kilogram weight class. Overall the Gaels as a team look to improve on last year's OUA standings which saw the men finish sixth and the women finish seventh.
