Volleyball (W): Gaels' Heller Named OUA Rookie of the Year
Heller's Rookie of the Year campaign saw her lead the OUA rookies in points per game, points, kills and kills per game. She was also the only rookie to break into the top-20 in all four of those categories. The greater Chicago area native also was a spirited leader, producing the team high kills in seven games this season. She is also one of five rookies on the young Gaels squad, which also includes 11 players of 15 who are in only their first two years of eligibility. Taylor, who is in her second season with the Gaels, was one of Queen's top offensive threats, finishing behind just Heller in all offensive categories. She had a team high 13 kills at Waterloo on February 2nd and a game high 16 kills against Brock on November 16. Heller's selection as the OUA East Rookie of the Year comes on the heels of last week's announcement that Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. had claimed the OUA Rookie of the Year in men's volleyball. Volleyball (W): Gaels Season Ends At Toronto
The Gaels committed fewer errors than the veteran Blues, and had more total attacks in the match, but Toronto had 42 kills to Queen's 33. Toronto also had 46 digs to the Gaels 34 and were a little better from the service line with four aces and five errors to Queen's one ace and eight errors. Leading the way for a balanced Queen's attack was Christiane Taylor of Toronto with a team high seven kills, and Annika Green of Calgary with six kills and a team high 15 digs. For the Blues, their fifth year star Anastasia Danilova of St. Petersburg, Russia had a game high 15 kills. The Tricolour finishes their OUA season with a 7-13 record while Toronto advances to next weekend's conference finals which the Blues will host. The OUA Final Four is scheduled for February 23 and 24. Overall the future looks bright for the Queen's squad as they have 11 players on their roster in their first or second year of university eligibility. Gaels End Regular Season With Sweep
The Gaels finish the regular season 7-12 and will face the OUA East division winning Toronto Varsity Blues in the quarterfinals this Saturday, February 16. Volleyball (W): Hamill Helps Gaels to Final Playoff Spot
The Gaels had a solid effort from several players with Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont. posting 10 kills and 18 digs, while Annika Green of Calgary had 23 assists. Lakehead's Ashley Baer of Stratford, Ont., recorded 12 kills and 15 digs, while teammate Kalea Mullett of Moosomin, Sask., also had 12 kills and 8 digs in a losing effort. Heading into the game, Lakehead could have thwarted the Gaels playoff push if they could have won their remaining two games both against the Gaels. Instead, with the win, Queen's will play a meaningless game against Lakehead on Sunday at 12:00pm to close out the regular season. Queen's has now clinched fourth place in the Ontario University Athletics East Division and they will meet the first place University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, February 26 in Toronto. The Gaels have yet to take a game against the Blues this season having lost both regular season match-ups 3-0. Volleyball (W): Gaels Play For Postseason In Thunder Bay Volleyball (W): Gaels Downed 3-1 to Laurier
Queen's lost the match with scores of 25-13, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-22. Laurier's top point getter was Kaitlin Sauder of St. Jacobs, Ont., who recorded 22 kills while Kristi Town of Orillia, Ont. had 41 assists. Gaels Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont. also broke into double digits in kills with 14. Ellen Gray of Toronto led the Gaels with 44 assists. This game was originally to be played on Friday night, but due to severe winter weather in the Waterloo area it was postponed until Sunday night. The loss puts the Gaels record at 5-12 and they are in a tie for fourth place of the OUA East with Ryerson at 10 points. Queen's will look to surge into a playoff position next weekend when they travel to Thunder Bay to match-up against Lakehead for two games. Lakehead currently has eight points and is in sixth position just two points behind the Gaels. Volleyball (W): Queen's Fall in Four Sets to Waterloo
The first set saw Waterloo win easily over the visiting Queen's squad, capturing the set 25-15. The Gaels rattled off a victory in the second set 25-19, but Waterloo continued to pressure taking the next two sets 25-19 and 25-15. Queen's efforts were led by Christiane Taylor of Toronto who recorded 13 kills while Jennifer Willis of Kingston, Ont. had 24 assists. Waterloo's top performers were Gabriella Leniak of Hamilton, Ont. who had 10 kills and Jara Brunt of Ashburn, Ont. had 30 assists. Queen's will return to the court on Super Bowl Sunday against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks starting at 6:00pm. This is a make-up game which was suppose to be played on Friday night, but was postponed due to the severe winter storm that battered the province of Ontario. Volleyball (M/W): Gaels Games Postponed
The games have been postponed and will be made up on Sunday evening starting at 6:00pm for the women and the men's game slated for 8:00pm. Queen's will travel to Waterloo on Saturday to face the Waterloo Warriors with the women's game set for 4:00pm and the men's game set for 6:00pm. Gaels Fall in Straight Sets to Toronto
Toronto came out firing in the first set, topping the Gaels 25-18. In the second set, the Varsity Blues duplicated their first set performance again topping the Gaels 25-18. The Blues never relented in their attack, though the Gaels put up a spirited and valiant defence. The third set saw the Varsity Blues take a commanding lead early, but the Gaels fought back from a 21-9 deficit in an attempt to make a comeback. They managed to managed to make the score 24-19 before Toronto converted the final match point. The loss gives the Gaels a record of 3-5 at home and an overall record of 5-10 which puts them in a tie for fourth place of the OUA East division with Ryerson. Queen's will next take on Wilfrid Laurier in Waterloo next week on February 1st. Gaels Upset York 3-1
In the opening set the Gaels received some strong serving from Colleen Ogilivie of Calgary. With the score 9-8 Queen's, Ogilvie served back to back aces and a service winner to make the score 11-8 and force a York timeout. The Lions closed to two points late in the set at 23-21 but Natasha Khan of Scarborough, Ont. served into the net and the Gaels finished things off when Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont. blasted her kill off the York block and out for a 25-21 win. York's Khan made up for her service error with some big serves early in the second set. The Lions led 6-6 when Khan proceeded to serve five straight points including two aces and York built the lead to 16-10 by the second technical timeout. Queen's closed the deficit with Lisa Cooke of Sydenham, Ont. serving and got to within two at 17-15. When Jenna Willis of Kingston blocked a York kill attempt the Gaels had tied the set at 19. York was able to get the lead back to two at 23-21 and when Ogilvie served for Queen's the visitors had tied the match at a set apiece. In the third set the young Gaels took a 14-11 serve on a kill by Button. York came back and eventually tied the set at 20 but Elyssa Heller of Highland Park, IL tipped a ball past a Lions block and then made consecutive stuff blocks of York hitters to put Queen's up 23-21. The Gaels subbed in a new server in Sarah Fetterly of Ottawa and her first serve ended in a Tricolour point when Heller made a third straight block. Fittingly Heller ended the set in Queen's favour at 25-23 on a kill that eluded all the Lions on the floor. The fourth set would see York come out strong and build a 12-7 lead forcing the Gaels to take a timeout. After the timeout the Gaels took the serve back and proceeded to run off five straight points to lead 13-12, punctuated by a great save by Hamill that eventually resulted in a York error. At 19-18 for Queen's after a Button kill, Heller and Button again both pounded spikes for points and a 22-18 lead. York narrowed the gap to 23-21 but on a rally that lasted 40 seconds Button put a kill off the York block for a point and when York's Chelsea Thomas of Port Colborne, Ont. put a kill attempt the Gaels had the match win. The Gaels had four players with double digit kills, led by Button with 14; Heller had 12, Hamill 11, and Ogilvie 10 with Ellen Gray of Toronto adding 40 assists. The victory improves Queen's to 5-9 for 10 points tied with Ryerson for fourth but the Gaels have two games in hand. The next game for Queen's is Sunday, January 27th when they host first place Toronto at the Physical Education Centre in the Bartlett Gym at 1pm. Volleyball (M/W): Gaels Host Toronto Sunday Afternoon

The Gaels defeated RMC and Ryerson last week to improve to 4-9 and after Sunday will be on the road to face Waterloo, Laurier before closing the regular season with two pivotal games at Lakehead. Toronto comes into the weekend leading the OUA East with a conference best record of 13-2 but on a one game losing streak after a five set loss to the Ottawa Gee Gees last Sunday. Before the loss the Blues had won 13 straight OUA matches including a three set sweep of the Gaels in Toronto November 11th by scores of 27-25, 25-18, 25-22. Queen's rookie Elyssa Heller of Highland Park, IL. had a game high 15 kills despite the loss. On the men's side the Blues will be the one facing the hot team as Queen's comes into the weekend on a four match winning streak after wins last week over RMC and at Ryerson. The streak has allowed the Gaels to move up the OUA standings into third place just two points behind the second place Guelph Gryphons. Toronto sits six points out of the playoffs having won just four games this season but are 2-2 since the start of January. The game will feature two of the top three offensive players in the conference with Gaels Jeff DeMeza of Calgary and the Blues Steven Kung of Toronto. Kung leads the OUA in total kills with 223 wtih DeMeza third at 191. Last weekend DeMeza who is the Queen's male athlete of the week recorded 24 kills in the five set victory at Ryerson. The kill total is the most by any conference player this month and the fourth most this season. Kung had 28 kills in a weekend win over Windsor and loss to Western. The volleyball doubleheader Sunday afternoon will start at 1pm in the Bartlett Gym with the women's match, the men are scheduled to start at 3pm. Queen's setter Erin Gray of Toronto had 41 assists with Libero Karlye Wong of Ottawa leading the team with 14 digs. The victory improves the Gaels to 4-9 and with Lakehead's three set loss to the Brock Badgers puts Queen's and the Thunderwolves in a fourth place tie with both teams having eight points. The top four teams in the OUA East division make the playoffs, the Gaels and Thunderwolves face each other on the final weekend of the regular season. Queen's is back home next weekend when they host the York Lions Saturday January 26th and the Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday January 27th. The match with York starts at 6pm with the Sunday contest starting 1pm. Both matches will be in the Queen's Bartlett Gym. Gaels Spike RMC In Straight Sets
Queen's got off to a great start in the opening set when Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont. began to serve with RMC leading 2-1. The rookie proceeded to serve 10 straight points putting the Gaels ahead 11-3 by the time RMC regained their serve. In the 10 point run another Queen's rookie Elyssa Heller of Highland Park, IL accounted for three of the points on kills. The Gaels would win the opening set when with Ellen Gray of Toronto serving RMC put the return out of bounds for a 25-7 Tricolour win. In the second set the Gaels jumped out to a 7-4 lead behind four straight points of the serve of Erin Sadler of Whitby, Ont. but the Paladins closed to 8-7 at the first technical timeout. With Queen's leading 23-18, Button hit a spike just in the RMC end followed by a block by Brenna Swift of Oshawa, Ont. to send the match to the third set. In what would turn out to the final set the Gaels again started off beautifully as they scored the first five points off Gray's serve. Queen's headed into the first technical timeout ahead 8-4 when Queen's with Button serving ran off four more points to lead 12-5 on RMC's next serve. The two teams than proceeded to alternate serve for the next seven points. The match came to an end when rookie Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont. blocked a potential RMC spike. Overall for the match the Gaels had their balanced attack led by Heller with eight kills and Button who had seven kills and 10 digs. For RMC Alexandria Daymond of Ottawa had five kills. The win for Queen's moves them into a fifth place tie with Ryerson just two points back of the fourth and final playoff spot in the OUA East held by Lakehead. The Gaels travel to Ryerson to face the Rams this Saturday, January 19th at noon. Golden Gaels Drop Five Set Triller to Windsor

A former national team member (1988-91) and OUA and CIS All-Star, Coach Christian joins Queen's after two seasons as an assistant coach with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, a perennial power in the OUA winning four league banners in the last seven seasons. Christian is a fully certified level 3 coach, who has led teams to gold medal performances at the 2005 Canada Summer Games and 2002 Ontario Summer Games. She has served as the head coach and mentor coach for various Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) teams achieving top 4 appearances at provincial and national competitions. She has also held coaching positions with the Toronto Blues and Scarborough Falcons volleyball clubs. "We are extremely fortunate to have Coach Christian join Team Queen's and to lead our women's volleyball program" commented Dal Cin "As a former national team player and extremely successful coach, Joely has experienced volleyball at the highest levels and understands what is necessary for our athletes to achieve top performances in the OUA and CIS." Joely takes over the reins from current head coach Chris Galbraith who has had to reduce his commitment to the Golden Gaels due to opportunities in his professional career. In speaking about this decision Coach Galbraith indicated that he felt that to "take the team to the next level required increased time away from my professional/business time and as a result it is timely to make this transition". Galbraith will continue his involvement with the program as an assistant coach. With respect to working with Coach Christian, Galbraith indicates "I am excited to be working with Joely and looking forward to building championship teams at Queen's in the future". "Coach Galbraith has contributed unwaveringly to our women's volleyball program" commented Dal Cin, "we are thrilled that Chris has the opportunity to grow his business and are equally pleased that he will continue his involvement with our team. We have great confidence that the combined skills of Coach Christian and Galbraith will provide tremendous leadership to our women's team." The Gaels begin their 2007-08 OUA season Friday October 26th at the Bartlett Gym against the defending league champion Ottawa Gee Gees. Women's Volleyball Announces Another New Gael
Women's Volleyball Gets Committment From Three Key Recruits
The first is Colleen Ogilvie. Colleen has played two summers on the Alberta Provincial Team, and is expected to play for them again this year. The 6'0 Middle Blocker has starred for the Calgary Dinos club team which recently finished tied for 5th at the Under-18 National Championships. A gifted student, Colleen is also a talented soccer player. In addition to playing Middle, Colleen has literally played every position during her years of playing volleyball, including Setter, Libero, and both Outside Hitting spots. According to Coach Galbraith "Her offensive capabilities are very impressive, but what sets Colleen apart from other similarly-sized volleyball players is her ability to pass, serve and play such a consistently high caliber of defense." Colleen says of Queen's "When I came out to Kingston for a visit in February I was really impressed by the sense of community and spirit within the campus. The volleyball team seems to be composed of very dedicated, skilled and hardworking athletes with an incredible sense of team unity, and looks to have a very promising future, which I hope to be a part of.". The second recruit is Elyssa Heller. Elyssa is coming to Queen's from Chicago, in order to gain a broader experience. She says "My goal as a student athlete is to find a higher-level institution where I can earn my degree while playing competitive volleyball! I want to be in an environment where I can grow as an individual, meet new people, and experience a new environment. I feel that Queen's University might be a great fit for me." Playing for Highland Park High School, Elyssa was named captain of the team, and won its MVP award in 2006. She was a unanimous pick for the all-star team for the Central Suburban League in which her team competed. Currently playing for the Sky High Volleyball Club, she led her team in kills, serve reception, and digs recently at a National Qualifying tournament in Pittsburgh where they finished 21st out of 90 teams. Elyssa says of her decision to come to Kingston "In addition to excellent academics, I loved the historic campus. I am so excited to join the Golden Gaels this fall and look forward to a prosperous season.". The final recruit is Nichola Osborne who will come to Queen's for one year to work on a Master's degree. Nichola has done 3 years at Oxford, where she captained the Oxford University women's team. She has played 5 seasons of club volleyball in England for London Malory where she won a National championship. She has also played professionally for one year in Austria for SSK Feldkirch . She represented England at the FISU games, and was a member of England's team from 2002 till 2006. She is currently a member of the Great Britain Women's National Team. She will be coached this summer by former Canadian National Team coach Dr. Lorne Sawula, who was recently named Head Coach of the Great Britain Women's team leading up to their appearance in the Olympic Games in London in 2012. At present, she is attending Bristol University in the UK as she studies medicine. Her year at Queen's will be spent studying for a Master's degree in Neuroscience. Nichola says of Queen's "I am coming to Queens to pursue a research interest that will support my medical studies back in England. With paralleled ambitions in volleyball, I am hoping to learn a lot from the Canadian system, and look forward to making big steps with the Gaels.".

Queen's Volleyball Hosts Showdown For First
The men's team which is ranked #7 in Canada hosts two teams that they will probably have to beat in the playoffs if they want to successfully defend their OUA championship. Friday night the Gaels, 15-1 first place, take on the York Lions who sit tied for fourth with a 12-5 record. The Lions were no match for Queen's when they last met in Toronto on November 18th. The Gaels swept the match in three straight winning the sets by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-17. York has been up and down this month losing to Western and McMaster but just last Saturday sweeping Toronto. The Lions are led offensively by Ryan Anderson and Paul Podstawka. Anderson is third in the OUA in points scored averaging 4.54 and averaging almost 4 kills a game. Podstawka is just behind sitting in 5th in points scored averaging 4.33. While the match with the Lions is big the Gaels will try to not look ahead to Saturday night when they take on the second place Ryerson Rams in a match that could clinch first place for the Tricolour. The Gaels and Rams met in last years best of three OUA final which the Gaels won to advance to the CIS championships. However back on November 19th Ryerson handed Queen's their first and only match so far this season in Toronto. The match which went the full five sets was won by Ryerson 25-21, 17-25, 25-16, 23-25 and 15-12. The Rams key player is fifth year All Canadian Ryan Vandenberg who had 26 kills in the November match with Queen's. The 6'10 native of Wooler, Ontario is second in the CIS in points scored averaging 5.50 and his 266 kills are also second in the nation behind only Brendan Peel of the Toronto Varsity Blues. Queen's will try to counter Vandenberg with two stars of their own in Luke Lichty and Jeff DeMeza who sit in the top 10 in the OUA in offence and their All Canadian setter Devon Miller. The two schools also met twice in October at the 20th Annual Queen's University Invitational with Ryerson winning in straight sets in round robin play and the Gaels winning the championship match in five exciting sets. The women's team have a pair of home games equally important as they play the Lakehead Thunderwolves in two matches that if both won by the Gaels will clinch the fourth and final playoff spot in the East division for the Tricolour. The Gaels are coming off a split in their Southwestern Ontario roadtrip last weekend, losing in straight sets to Western and then beating Windsor in four sets. Queen's continues to follow the lead of their captain Amanda Digel who is fourth in the OUA and eighth in the CIS in offence averaging 4.03 ppg. Digel's 205 total kills put her third in the league. The Gaels are also getting a contribution from Louise Hamill who is in the top 20 in the OUA with 3.08 ppg and 155 total kills. The Thunderwolves are struggling having lost their last 10 matches and have not won even a game since November 25th seven matches ago. The visitors also do not have any of their players in the top 20 of the OUA in offence. Game times Friday night are 6pm for the women and 8pm for the men with the same times Saturday night. All matches are being played in the Bartlett Gym and Saturday night both sets of bleachers will have been pulled as a capacity crowd is expected. Women's Volleyball Wins 3-1 At Windsor

Gaels On Road To Play Red Hot Western Ontario Mustangs
For the Queen's women's team their matchup with Western Ontario will be a tough one as well with the Mustangs leading the OUA West division with a league best 12-1 record. The Mustangs handed the OUA defending champion and East division leading Toronto Varsity Blues their first loss of the season last Sunday in four sets. Western has won 12 straight matches since they lost in Ottawa in their season opener on October 22nd. In those 12 victories the Mustangs have only been taken to a fifth set twice and have swept six other matches. For the Gaels, they are still fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East division leading fifth place Ryerson by just two points but with a game in hand. The Gaels have been up and down since the Christmas break losing, then winning during their last five matches.
