Gaels team up with local Volleyball Club to take the Under- 21 Men's Volleyball Championships
The Queen's Pegasus Team made quick work of the Waterloo Tigers in the Semi Finals with winning sets: 25-15 & 25-18. The team earned their gold by taking out the Laurier Predators in straight sets: 25-22 & 25-20. The 11-team event, in which the Queen's Pegasus Team was seeded first, began with them taking on the York-PacMan Team. The Tri-colour came out on top with winning sets: The 21U National Championships, which the local crew had their sites set on winning, was recently cancelled by Volleyball Canada, thus ending the season for the Kingston boys. According to Head Coach Brenda Willis, "The success of this young team (only 1 athlete was 20+) clearly bodes well for prospect of future success for our program at Queen's". In their final other round robin game, the local squad took care of the Redeemer College Royals also in straight sets: 27-25, 25-22, & 25-17, giving them first in the A Pool and a bye through the pre-quarter round.

Joining Miller with national recognition is Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. who was selected to the CIS All Rookie Team. Zeeman also won OUA Rookie of the Year honours earlier this year and finished the season in the top-ten of the conferences for kills and points per game. He also cracked the top-15 in the OUA for points and kills scored. The 6'6" Arts and Science student was joined on the All-Rookie Team by McMaster Marauder Josh Lichty of St. Catharines, Ont. who is the younger brother of current Queen's men's volleyball player Luke Lichty. 2007-08 CIS MEN'S VOLLEYBALL AWARDS & ALL-CANADIANS

VOLLEYBALL (M): GAELS LOSE TO MCMASTER; EARN SILVER MEDAL Hamilton (February 21, 2008) – Queen’s hopes of a three-peat in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men’s volleyball championship were swept away on Thursday as the McMaster Marauders defeated the Gaels 3-0 in Hamilton. McMaster won the best-of-three series in two straight games. McMaster captured their first OUA title since the 1991-92 season by claiming game two with set scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21. The Marauders, who are the No. 2 nationally ranked squad in the country, never gave the Gaels much of a chance winning all the sets in both games. Jeremy Groenveld of Wellend, Ont. led the Marauders by finishing with 12 kills, two aces and six digs for a total of 16 points. Setter Sean Panchal of Mississauga, Ont. had 31 assists. Two Kingston natives also played a part in the championship game with Parrish Offer recording five kills and four digs while Tyler Santoni finished with three kills and four digs. The Gaels were led by fourth-year veteran Jeff DeMeza of Calgary who registered 12 kills and three digs for a total of 12 points. Setter Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. had a game high 35 assists. “We just got outplayed,” said Miller a fifth year player who concluded his OUA career tonight. “There were times when we played well, but they turned it up on us. You have to give them credit, they managed us well.” Queen’s fifth-year veteran Dan McCrae of Brampton, Ont., echoed Miller’s comments. “We didn’t respond. They put a lot of pressure on us tonight... we just didn’t give it that extra little bit that it took. We kept talking about it but we just didn’t do it.” It was a great season, no regrets. It just didn’t work out in the end.” Gaels Head Coach Brenda Willis was proud of her team and the result despite the close of Queen’s 2007-08 campaign. “There are nine other teams that would like that silver medal. Considering we played three rookies an awful lot, speaks really well for our future; that’s encouraging.” “I just think it was McMaster’s year! They didn’t falter all season – they won every match the played and have an undefeated season. They are ranked second in the country for all the right reasons.” Queen’s and McMaster battled back and forth in the opening set with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage. The Gaels moved ahead to make the score 23-22 with a key point from rookie Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont., but couldn’t build on the momentum. McMaster rattled off two quick points to earn the set 25-23. The Marauders relentless attack started to take hold in the second set building a five-point, 18-13 lead. From that point on, Queen’s only came within four points as McMaster finished the set with a final score of 25-20. The third set saw much of the same as the Gaels dug a insurmountable 18-11 hole. Queen’s rallied for four unanswered points but the Marauders attack wouldn’t let up and finished the Gaels with a score of 25-21. Queen’s finished the regular season in second place of the OUA with a final record of 14-6 while McMaster finished undefeated at 20-0. Both teams received byes in the first round. In its semi-final match, Queen’s topped Ryerson 3-1, while McMaster topped Western 3-1. Previously, Queen’s were the two-time defending OUA Champions. The Gaels season was highlighted last week with Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. earning OUA Rookie of the Year honours. Stu Hamilton of Ottawa claimed Libero of the Year honours while Miller and DeMeza were selected as OUA first-team All-Stars. McMaster will advance to the Canadian Championships which take place February 29-March 2 in Quebec. The University of Laval is the championship host. Volleyball (M): Zeeman Brilliant As Gaels Lose Opening OUA Final Match
The Marauders jumped on the Gaels right off the start of the opening set scoring three of the first four points. McMaster increased the lead to 8-4 at the first technical timeout after Queen's rookie Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont. spiked the ball out of bounds. Out of the timeout the visitors ran off five of the next seven points to lead 13-6 and force the Gaels to use a timeout. The Marauders then scored to make it 16-9 when Nathan Groenveld of Welland, Ont. blocked a Gael kill to take the set into the second technical timeout. The Gaels were down 19-10 when they mounted a comeback behind the serving of Sam Pedlow of Barrie, Ont. The third year player scored eight straight points off his serve to make it 19-18. After Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. hit the ball out for Queen's, McMaster went up 23-19 on a Parish Offer (Kingston) kill and a block from Adam Schulz of St. Catharines, Ont. The Gaels again clawed back to tie the set at 24 on a Zeeman kill and a net violation by McMaster. However, the No. 2 ranked Marauders finished the set with kills from Nathan and Jeremy Groenveld to take the set 26-24. In the second set the Hamilton team came out of the blocks on fire with Offer serving and scored the first eight points to go into the technical timeout ahead 8-0. The Marauders continued to roll and when Duncan Gillespie scored a point on a deft tip Queen's was trailing 14-5 and forced to use their second and final timeout of the set. Similar to the first set the Gaels came back closing to to 16-12 by the second technical timeout. Then the Gaels closed to 18-16 on a block by Nick Gralewicz of St. Catharines, Ont. McMaster finished off the second set at 25-21 on an Offer tip and a return error by the Gaels. With their backs against the wall in the third set the Gaels started much better and matched the Marauders point for point. Zeeman put a massive kill into the McMaster court to give Queen's an 8-7 lead going into the first technical timeout. The set seemed to turn at 11-11 with a Jeremy Groenveld kill and then a service winner followed by an Offer kill and Ryan Hudson (Winnipeg, Man.) tip to make it 15-11. The Gaels would close to 17-15 but again McMaster went on a scoring binge tallying eight of the last 10 points. When Peter Hrkal of Caledon East, Ont. blocked a Queen's spike the visiting Marauders had the sweep winning the set 25-17. After the match McMaster head coach Dave Preston says the Bartlett Gym is the toughest spot to win for a road team. He added the Marauders have been focused since September "Their preparation has been fantastic, I would love to take credit for it but I am just facilitating as a coach. The game plans and in match adjustments are coming from the guys themselves". Queen's head coach Brenda Willis acknowledged that McMaster does not have a lot of weaknesses but she said her team did not play well defensively. "I don't think we passed as well yet when we got a good pass we scored at will. We had balls hit us in the arms and we didn't manage them. We had balls hit us square on as blockers but we did not block so we have to manage ourselves better, I thought we managed them okay". Leading the way for Queen's was OUA Rookie of the Year Joren Zeeman who had 15 kills and setter Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. who had 38 assists. For McMaster Offer was top man with 13 kills and Jeremy Groenveld added 10. The series now shifts to Hamilton and McMaster's Burridge Gym for game 2 Thursday, February 21 at 7pm. If a third match is necessary it will be Saturday, February 23 at 2pm in Hamilton. Volleyball (M): Queen's Advances to the OUA Final
DeMeza also had three digs in the Ryerson game as Queen's won with set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-18. 2008 OUA Rookie of the Year Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., posted 12 points earning 11 kills, one ace and a dig. Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. had 43 assists. Chris McLaughlin (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Rams, recording 21 kills, 3 digs and 2 blocks, while Greg McDonald (Chatham, Ont.) finished with 13 kills. Cameron Bartlett (Chatham, Ont.) led the Rams in assists with 31. All season long, Queen's had little difficulty with Ryerson, disposing of the Rams twice in the regular season. Prior to tonight's game, the Gaels had only lost two sets of the eight they had played against the Rams. Tonight the Rams came out firing on all cylinders and pushed Queen's in the opening set. After being down 13-9, Queen's rallied for four key points and took the opening set 25-21. In the second set, Ryerson got out to a large lead, but Queen's rallied for eight consecutive points turning the momentum in the Gaels' favour though Queen's did lose the second set 25-22. Queen's easily topped the Rams' attack and won the third and deciding sets with finishing scores of 25-18. "Everyone played well, everyone did their job" said Gaels fifth-year veteran Daniel McCrae of Brampton, Ont. "We were down a few times, but we pulled together and managed to come back when we needed to. Overall it was a great team effort." Queen's can now focus their attention to the McMaster Marauders who they will play in the OUA Final next week. The Gaels have lost twice to McMaster this year. In late November, QueenÕs lost 3-2 at McMaster and just one week ago they lost 3-1 inside Bartlett. McMaster earned its berth into the final on a 3-1 victory over the Western Mustangs earlier on Saturday afternoon. The OUA best-of-three championship final kicks off on Tuesday night at the Physical Education Centre (Bartlett Gym) against the undefeated McMaster Marauders. The game is scheduled for 7:00pm. The series moves to Hamilton for the next two games with McMaster hosting Game 2 on Thursday evening with Game 3 (if necessary) played on Saturday at McMaster. Other Gaels earning recognition were Stu Hamilton of Ottawa as Libero of the Year while Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. and Jeff DeMeza of Calgary were selected as first-team All-Stars. Zeeman finished second on his team and fourth in the OUA in points per game averaging 3.915, while showing a great deal of poise and accuracy for a first year player. He also finished second on his team in kills with 175 and concluded the season with 17 service aces, 16 blocks and 45 digs. In addition to his Rookie of the Year honours, Zeeman also earned a nod on the OUA's All-Rookie Team. During his Libero of the Year campaign, he collected 89 digs averaging 1.98 digs per game for the Gaels. The Gaels garnered two first-team All-Star selections with DeMeza and Miller earning the nod. Last week the won in three straight sets against Guelph and then lost to No. 2 ranked McMaster University in four games. This week Queen’s enter the pool as the 10th ranked team which sees the University of Alberta retain its No. 1 status. McMaster, who was ranked third last week, moves into second position and remains the only team in the country who are undefeated. The University of Winnipeg takes over third position while the University of British Columbia and Laval round out the top-five rankings. Thompson Rivers University, based in Kamloops, B.C., had the biggest drop in rankings falling from seven to ninth position with Dalhousie University placing sixth, Brandon and the University of New Brunswick each leapfrogged Thompson Rivers moving to seventh and eighth. The Gaels start the playoffs and defence of their two straight Ontario University Athletic (OUA) titles this Saturday when they host the OUA conference semi-final. Their opponent for that game will be determined on Wednesday evening and will either be Guelph or Ryerson. Those teams will face off tomorrow in Guelph in the quarter-final match. Saturday’s game is slated to start at 7:00pm in the Physical Education Centre (Bartlett Gym) with the winner just two wins from a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship. The first set saw the McMaster Marauders jump out to an early 3-8 lead over the Golden Gaels as Queen's struggled early. Though the Gaels kept up the fight, the Marauders were in the lead 16-10 by the next technical timeout. McMaster continued to dominate as they played to a 25-19 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the game. The second frame saw the Gaels take a solid 16-12 midway through the set. However, the Marauders attack didn't let up, and they positioned themselves for a comeback. Soon Queen's lead was trimmed down to 21-10, and McMaster managed to tie the game at 23. The Marauders then scored the next two points to take the game 25-23, which saw the Gaels visibly deflated heading into the third set. Despite the emotional let down from the second set, Queen's rebounded and established a strong lead early and took the set 25-18. The Gaels turned away a strong comeback attempt from the Marauders late in the set and Queen's looked like they might make a run at a comeback. In the fourth set, the Gaels kept the score close until late in the frame when McMaster took over and defeated the Gaels 25-20 for the set and the game 3-1. The Gaels were led by Daniel McCrea of Brampton, Ont. with a team high 13 kills, while team-mate Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. had a game high 36 assists. The Marauders were led by Peter Hrkal of Caledon East, Ont. with a game high 17 kills and Sean Panchal of Mississauga, Ont. with a team high 29 assists. Although the loss puts the Gaels record to 14-6, which equals the Guelph Gryphons', Queen's holds the tie-break, which they earned by sweeping Guelph on Friday night. The second place standing means the two-time defending OUA champions receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs and will contend against the winner of Ryerson and Guelph. That game will be contested on Wednesday while the Gaels will play the winner in the OUA Semi-Final on February 16 at Queen's (Game Time TBA). Volleyball (M): Queen's Sweep Second Place Desires Away From Guelph
Queen's handled the Gryphons in straight sets with scores of 27-25, 25-17 and 25-18. The Gaels improve their record to 14-5 which puts them in sole possession of second place at 28 points, two ahead of Guelph with just one game remaining in the regular season. Guelph is unable to overtake the Gaels for second place due to OUA tie-breaking policies with the University of Western Ontario as the lone challenger for second place with 24 points and two games remaining. Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., continued his strong play for the Gaels leading the way in the Guelph victory with 14 points including 11 kills. Jeff DeMeza of Calgary, posted 11 points with eight kills while Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. recorded 26 assists. DeMeza, Miller, Pete Galbraith of Kingston, Ont. and Niko Rikavina of Mississauga, Ont., all recorded four digs. Guelph's top scorer was Troy Rieck of Oakbank, Man., who notched 13 points with 11 kills while Jon Waito of Kitchener, Ont., had 26 assists. Queen's will battle OUA leader and volleyball rival McMaster University on Saturday night. This game will mark the close of the 2007-08 regular season and the Gaels are looking to secure second place with a victory on Saturday. NOTES: The second set was delayed several minutes due to a bat which had found its way into Bartlett Gymnasium and was making low flying attempts on the court and players bench... Officials called a halt to the game until the bat disappeared into the rafters. Volleyball (M): Laurier Stops Gaels Win Streak at Seven
Queen's lost the opening two sets 25-20 and 27-25 rebounded to take the third set 25-20 and then lost the final set 25-22. This game was originally to be played on Friday night, but due to severe winter weather in the Waterloo area it was postponed until Sunday night. Joren Zeeman of Cambridge was the top point getter for the Gaels earning 14 kills while Jeff DeMeza of Calgary followed with 13. Devon Miller of Barrie led the team in assists with 33. Laurier's Jean-Paul Wikerd of Kitchener, Ont. earned 15 kills and Erik Kroman of Etobicoke, Ont. had 23 assists. The loss drops Queen's into a tie with Guelph for second place with a 13-5 record. The Gaels meet Guelph on Friday at home in a battle for second place before concluding the season against first-place McMaster on Saturday night. Volleyball (M): Zeeman Has 16 Kills in Gaels Seventh Straight Win
The Golden Gaels opened the game on the defensive losing the first set to the Warriors 25-20. That would be all the Waterloo squad would manage as Queen's rebounded taking the next set 25-22 and the third set 25-23. In the final set, Waterloo fought hard, but the Gaels closed the match 25-21. Queen's was led by Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., who had a 16 kills while Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont., had 30 assists. This is a make-up game which was suppose to be played on Friday night, but was postponed due to the severe winter storm that battered the province of Ontario. Volleyball (M/W): Gaels Games Postponed
The games have been postponed and will be made up on Sunday evening starting at 6:00pm for the women and the men's game slated for 8:00pm. Queen's will travel to Waterloo on Saturday to face the Waterloo Warriors with the women's game set for 4:00pm and the men's game set for 6:00pm.

Tied at 24, both sides refused to yield to the other. The teams exchanged points until the Gaels finally capitalized on a chance and took the set 31-29, thanks to Daniel McCrae of Brampton, Ont., who made a key block for the set point. Toronto refused to lose and with their backs to the wall, won the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth and deciding final set. The Gaels pulled out all the stops in the final frame, rolling over the Toronto side 15-9 to take the set and the game. The Gaels showed the dominating form that has won them the last two OUA championships and climbed them up the league standings. In the third set the Gaels were trailing 8-4 when their fifth year setter Devon Miller of Barrie, Ont. went back to serve. The 2006-07 All-Canadian proceeded to serve four straight points and tie the set at eight. The Gaels leading 13-12 in the third set had Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. serve consecutive aces and after Miller made a gorgeous tip for a point Queen's went into the second technical timeout ahead, 16-13. RMC came back and by the second technical timeout were only down a point to the Gaels 16-15. The Paladins took the opening set 28-26 when Gael Dan McCrae of Brampton, Ont. had his tip go into the net. In the second set RMC again made their cross town rivals life tough forcing a Gaels timeout at 18-18. The victory gives Queen's a 2-1 record at this year's CIS tournament, their best showing in three appearances since the adoption of the eight-team format in 1985-86. Queen's highest finish on record was a third-place performance at the four-team, double round-robin tournament in 1971-72. Queen's spent much of the first set playing catch-up with McMaster, going into the technical timeouts trailing 8-6 and 16-14. During a string of five unanswered points, the Tricolour finally took the lead at 19-18 and took the set 25-21 when Adam Simac fired back a Marauder attack. Queen's nursed a slim lead through most of the second set, sustaining a number of long rallies to keep the Marauders from gaining any advantage. Leading 8-5 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts, the Gaels pulled away in the late going. Keeping Mac to just four points after the second technical, Luke Lichty finally closed the set at 25-18 with a kill. The third set was much more of a seesaw affair. Mac carried an 8-5 lead into the first technical timeout and the advantage changed hands a few more times before Queen's finally took and retained the lead at 15-14. A block by Luke Lichty an Adam Simac gave the Gaels the set and match 25-19. The men's volleyball Gaels finish the 2005-06 season as OUA champions and ranked fifth in the nation. They posted a 16-4 regular season record, were 3-0 in the OUA playoffs, and 2-1 at the CIS tournament. Men's CIS Volleyball Downs Laval 3-2

JeanFrancois St-Amour was named Laval's Player of the Match, excelling all-round with ten kills and 11 blocks (1 solo, 10 assist). The first set saw both teams match each other almost point for point. Queen's held narrow leads of 8-6 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Laval rallied to tie the game at 21-21 before some key Queen's blocking and a final kill by Adam Simac gave the Gaels the first set 25-22. Queen's maintained a narrow but consistent lead through the second set, leading 8-5 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts, before Devon Miller made a sudden kill to take the set 25-19 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Laval responded by taking command early in the third set. The Rouge et Or built a dominating 16-10 lead at the second technical timeout, only to see Queen's rally to tie the game at 17 apiece. Laval regained control to take the set 25-22. The fourth set started quite evenly matched with the two squads trading the lead back and forth until Laval took a 10-9 lead and slowly pulled away to take the set 25-21. Laval took a slim lead in the early going of the fifth and final set. Trailing 8-6 as the ends changed, Queen's again battled back to regain the lead at 11-10, maintaining their margin through to a 15-11 victory. The Gaels advance to the consolation final against the McMaster Marauders today (5 Mar.) at 11:00am. Men's Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Trinity Western

Queen's struggled to get into a good rhythm at the start of the third set, allowing Trinity Western to open up a 6-0 lead before breaking onto the scoreboard. Trailing 8-2 at the first technical timeout, the Gaels increased their output to narrow the lead to 16-11 by the time of the next technical, and crept to within a point of tying at 22-21. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, against McMaster, things evened out in the later stages, and ultimately saw Queen's season end by just 2 points, losing 15-13 in the fifth set, to McMaster.
