SWIMMING (W): ARTHUR FINISHES SEVENTH AT CIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Vancouver (February 23, 2008) – At the CIS Swimming Championships in Vancouver, Gaels Jen Arthur of Kingston, Ont. was 7th in the 50-metre butterfly in a time of 28.37 seconds. Jennifer Carroll from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières was the gold medalist in a time of 27.02 seconds.

Arthur also competed in the 50-metre freestyle event where she finished 20th and the 100-metre freestyle event where she finished 37th.   The nursing student who is in her final year at Queen’s was the only Gael to have qualified for the 2008 CIS Swimming Championship.

Swimming (M/W): Arthur Leads Gaels At OUA Finals
Jen Arthur of Kingston, Ont. was the standout for the Queen's Golden Gaels at this past weekend's OUA Championships. Arthur won the school's only medal with a bronze medal finish in the 50 metre butterfly race, which qualifies her for the CIS Championships February 22-24 in Vancouver. She qualified for the final with a time of 28.82, eclipsing the Queen's record by almost a full minute on Saturday. In the final on Sunday Arthur finished third, .21 seconds behind the gold medalist from Guelph. Overall, the men's team finished eighth with the women placing 11th; the host University of Toronto won both team titles. Arthur's performance in the 50 metre butterfly also qualifies her for the Canadian Senior National Championships this summer.

Swimming (W): Arthur Breaks School Record and Qualifies for Canadian Championship
Toronto (February 9, 2008) - Kingston's Jen Arthur broke the school record of 29.80 in the 50 metre butterfly with a time of 28.82. The time advances Arthur into Sunday's 50-metre butterfly final and also qualifies her to compete at the Canadian Inter-University Sport (CIS) Championship later this month.

The CIS Swimming Championship will take place in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia from February 22-24. With the mark, Arthur also qualifies to compete at the Canadian Senior National Championships this summer.

Tomorrow, Arthur will look to take gold in the 50-metre butterfly in addition to the 50 metre freestyle. In the freestyle she is aiming to qualify for the Canadian Olympic Trials qualifying time, which is set at 26.99.

Swimming (M/W) Queen's defeats Brock and York (submitted by Chris Kreutzner)
St. Catharines (October 27th, 2007) - Queen’s swimming had an impressive showing this weekend at the Brock Tri-Meet. While some key swimmers from the Queen’s team were missing, they were still able to defeat Brock (1090 to 868 points) and York (1134 to 318 points).  Unfortunately they were narrowly defeated by a strong Waterloo team (1437.50 to 1014.50 points).

Notable performances from the men’s side included victories by rookie Jamie Loh with a win in the 400IM, and Chris Kreutzner in the 100m breaststroke with a time closing in on the CIS championship standard.   On the women’s side Whitney Lum, Alex Hubbard and Ali Doherty all posted victories for the Gaels.  The swim team looks to build off of these results in preparation for the Divisional Championships in three weeks.

Swimming (M/W): Divisional Championships (submitted by Chris Kreutzner)
Sudbury, Ont. (November 18, 2007)
- Both the men’s and women’s teams faired well this weekend in Sudbury at the Eynon Divisional Championships against McMaster, Guelph, Laurentian, Brock, Carleton and York.  A small squad of Queen’s athletes rallied alongside some of the best swimmers in the province.  Although our biggest meet of the season, our main focus is (and has always been) on the OUA Championships hosted by U of T in the new year.  Despite the lateness of the OUA Championship meet, many of the Queen’s swimmers were swimming best or near best times.  This is exceptional at this point in the season and should correlate with stellar performances come February.

On the men’s side strong performances were had by both the 4 x 50 medley relay and 4 x 50 free relay, both placing 3rd.  The 4 x 100 free relay was a solid 4th.  Individually, top scorers included rookies Jamie Loh, Matt White and Emre Amasyali and team captains Adam Mclellan and Chris Kreutzner with consistent top 8 finishes among them including four medals.  Strong performances were also seen by veterans Mark Kellenberger and Edmund Swam.

The women’s team stepped it up with a 2nd place finish in the 4 x 50 medley relay.  Individually, veterans Whitney Lum, Alexandra Hubbard, Katie McIntosh lead the way with top scoring finishes and were backed by solid performances by Jenelle Kasper, Victoria Johnston and rookie Kelsey Wibbing.

Our two lone distance swimmer, Carly Schelberg and Greg McLeod, showed that consistent training does pay off with best times each in the 200, 400 and 800 free and the 200, 400 and 1500 free, respectively.

Enyon Divisional Championships at Guelph University
GUELPH, ON (November 18, 2006) - The Golden Gaels varsity swimming team traveled to Guelph this weekend to compete in the 2006-2007 Enyon Division championship meet. After a marginally slow start on Saturday due to heavy mid-season training and few racing opportunities to date, both the men’s and women’s teams found their legs Sunday for some exciting and competitive results.

The depth of the women’s team was evident with top ten finishes in nearly every event, with standout performances all weekend by Basia Pajerski, Faye Ling, and rookie Alex Hubbard who placed second in the 50m Backstroke in 31.70s and already closing in on national CIS qualifying standards. The women’s relays also turned heads with a mostly rookie squad led by co-captain Brittany Segeren placing 3rd in the 200m Medley Relay, and a team just out-touched at the finish missing 4thplace in the 400m Freestyle Relay by 0.22s for a time of 4:12.84s.

The men’s team also enjoyed more depth this weekend with an expanded and improved roster from last year. Some exceedingly fast swims of note came from Julian Chang, Chris Kreutzner, Edmund Swan, and dark horse Brian Kim, who placed 2nd in the 50m Breaststroke at 31.25 – another CIS hopeful. Co-captain Mike Chu helped motivate the team by swimming impressively despite a nagging ankle injury, and led the men’s 400m Freestyle Relay to 3rd place in 3:45.33 amidst deafening cheers from all six competing schools.

While only the top sixteen finishes in each event are worth points in the final tally, notable swims from Annie Ruksys, Serena Palmer, Darcy Reynolds, and Vince Enachescu – among others – scored points to help propel Queen’s to 4th place in the division. While UWO and Guelph were expected to dominate (finishing 1stand 2nd, respectively), finishing close behind perennial division rivals Carleton did not sit well with the team or the coaches, and the Golden Gaels will be looking to exact revenge against the Ravens when the province comes together for the OUA Championship Finals in February.

Final scores were: UWO Mustangs – 1970.5pts, Guelph Gryphons – 1770pts, Carleton Ravens – 939.5pts, Queen’s Golden Gaels – 839.5pts, Trent Excalibur – 556pts, Brock Badgers – 373.5pts.
