Squash (M/W):  Gaels Garner Three All Star Selections

Hamilton, Ont. (February 7, 2008) – Yesterday the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced that three Queen’s squash athletes earned All-Star selections for their play this season.

The women's team received two selections both to the first team with Rebecca Hazell of Toronto and Michelle Craig of Guelph, Ont. join four others while Nick Burnett of Victoria from the men's team was named to the six player second team.  Both Gaels teams finished third in the OUA and will each face McGill in the conference semi-finals today at the University of Toronto.

McGill placed a league leading four athletes on the women's all star teams while their men's team had two selections.  The Western Mustangs finished first in both standings and placed three players in the respective all star teams with Stephanie Edmison of Toronto being named the women's Player of the Year.  The Mustangs face the host Varsity Blues in both the men's and women's semi finals.  The gold and bronze medal matches will take place Saturday February 9.

Squash (M): Gaels Advance To OUA Playoffs
The Queen's Golden Gaels qualified for the conference semi finals with a 3-1 weekend at the OUA crossover in Toronto on the weekend. The Gaels defeated McMaster and Waterloo by 4-2 scores and Brock 6-0 while losing 6-0 to perennial power Western. Leading the way for Queen's were rookie Alex Ford of London, Ont. and second year player Paul Gartenburg of Toronto who both won three of their four matches.

The Gaels finish the regular season in third in the OUA will face McGill in the conference semi finals February 8th and 9th at Brock.

Men's and Women's Squash Finish Fourth at OUA Finals
Hamilton, ON (February 10, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's and women's squash teams lost both their matches at the OUA Championships Saturday at McMaster University. The men lost all six matches in their semi final to the eventual champion Western Ontario Mustangs and then were beaten in five of six matches by the Waterloo Warriors for the bronze medal. The women were able to make things a little closer in their semi final but lost 4-2 to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues before falling by the same score to McGill for the bronze medal. Congratulations to the squash teams on a great season and especially to Sean Horton, Michelle Craig and Rebecca Hazell on being named league all stars.

Three Gaels Named OUA Squash All Stars
Hamilton, ON (February 9, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels play their OUA men's and women's squash semifinal matches tomorrow but today three of their players were named OUA All Stars. On the men's side Sean Horton a Kingston native was named to the second team with Western and Toronto dominating the selections. The Mustangs who play Queen's in Saturday afternoon's semifinal had three first team and one second team all star while the Varsity Blues had two named to each squad. For the women two Gaels picked up first team honours. Michelle Craig from Guelph, Ontario the captain of the team and first year Toronto resident Rebecca Hazell join a six member crew that includes two Western Mustangs, a Toronto Varsity Blue and one player from McGill who face Queen's in tomorrow afternoon's semifinal. Bronze and gold medal finals are scheduled Sunday afternoon also at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Queen's Squash Teams Off To OUA Finals This Weekend
Kingston, ON (February 8, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's and women's squash teams are off to Hamilton this weekend for the OUA Championships at McMaster University. The men qualified as the fourth seed with a record of 20-16 and will face the defending champion Western Ontario Mustangs in Saturday's semifinals. The Mustangs who are a squash power lost just one single match this season and when they faced Queen's swept them six matches to none. Leading the Gaels is their top seeded player Sean Horton who is in his fifth and final year. The other semifinal will feature Toronto against Waterloo. Waterloo is the only school to take a match off the Mustangs this season back on November 11th. For the Queen's women they are seeded third heading into the finals and will face Toronto in the semifinals with the winner facing either Western or McGill. The Gaels when they played Toronto earlier this season they lost five matches to one with captain Michelle Craig picking up the lone win in straight sets over Brooke Biggs the Blue's number one seed. The gold and bronze medal matches for both the men and women will be played Sunday afternoon with league all stars being named Saturday evening.

Men's Squash Qualifies For OUA Playoffs
Toronto, ON (January 29, 2007) - The men's squash team participated in the cross-over tournament against the western sectional schools (Brock, McMaster, Waterloo and Western) this past weekend. Queen's entered the tournament tied with McGill with 4 points gained earlier at the East Sectional, and needed to do well in order to make the team championships. The Queen's team started out strongly with a 6-0 match victory against Brock on Saturday but then lost 0-6 to the always-powerful Western team. On Sunday, Queen's tied Waterloo 3-3 and then swept McMaster 6-0. The 15 points gained against the western teams placed Queen's in fourth place with 19 points behind Western (35), Waterloo (25) and Toronto (24), and qualified Queen's for the team championships to be held in Hamilton in two week's time. Standouts for Queen's were Paul Gartenburg, a first-year rookie, and Rich Spavin who both won 3 out of 4 matches.

Men's Squash
Kingston, On (November 18, 2006) - The Queen's men's squash team had its hands full on Saturday against the visiting McGill and Toronto teams. Queen's had beaten both teams in an exhibition tournament a few weeks ago by the same 5-2 match score. But the competition was much tougher this time with both visitors bringing their 'A' teams. Toronto was especially strong, winning 5 out of 6 matches against both Queen's and McGill. The Queen's-McGill match-up was very close and ended up in a tie, 3-3 in matches won. The stand-out for Queen's was Sean Horton, the team #1, who played an excellent match against McGill's Matt Balfour to win in 3 games. Other match winners for Queen's were Paul Gartenburg, Rich Spavin and Matt McEwen. When the dust settled, Toronto came away with 10 matches won against 4 each for McGill and Queen's. The next event is the cross-over against Western, McMaster, Waterloo and Brock in January. We will have to do well against those teams if we are to secure enough points to make it to the playoffs which we missed for the first time in a long time last year.

Men's Exhibition Squash Tournament
Canton, NY (November 12, 2006) - The men's squash team travelled to St. Lawrence U. in Canton NY to participate in an exhibition tournament against the host university and Middlebury. Queen's went 5-5 in matches against both opponents if the results of all 10 players are included. But the american schools count only the top 9 positions and if that is done, we ended up losing 4-5 against both. That actually wasn't a bad result considering we were missing 3 of our top 4 players, 2 of whom were participating in the Ontario Closed Squash Championships in Toronto. The top results for Queen's with two wins each were posted by Ted McAlister, Karan Bedi, Jeremy Setterfield and Michelle Craig. Michelle, the #2 on the Queen's women's team, happily agreed to join the men to complete the 10-man(person!) team. Both players who lost to her were visibly chagrined by the result!

Men's Squash Exhibition Play Against Toronto and McGill
Kingston, Ont (October 28, 2006) - The Queen's men hosted an exhibition squash tournament against Toronto and McGill on Saturday. This warm-up for the regular season provided a good indication of how things would go at the upcoming sectional against the same two teams later in November. Queen's won 5 out of 7 matches against both opponents, finishing the tournament with 10 matches won against 7 for McGill and 4 for Toronto. Although both McGill and Toronto were missing one or two top players, it's clear that Queen's is much more competitive than it was last year. This is partly due to the improved play of returning veterans, notably Rich Spavin, and a crop of excellent rookies. Newcomer Paul Gartenburg, playing 4th, easily won his first match and then extented the McGill number 2 to 5 games in a hard-fought, exciting match. Matt McEwen, another rookie, also came through with two big wins. To say the least, this season promises to be interesting!

Men's Squash Cross-over
TORONTO, Ont. (Jan. 21, 2006)The men's squash team participated in the cross-over against the western teams in the league this past weekend in Toronto. This was an important tournament for the Queen's team as it would decide whether or not we would qualify for the team championships. We were well down in the standings after the our sectional against Toronto and McGill.

The outcome against Western was the expected short end of a 6-0 defeat. However a 6-0 win over McMaster kept our hopes alive. What was needed was a good result against Waterloo Sunday morning. Unfortunately that did not materialize and Queen's lost that encounter 5-1. The 6-0 win over Brock later in the day wasn't enough to push us into the playoff pool and, for the first time in more than ten years, Queen's unfortunately did not qualify for the team championships.

Our disappointment is balanced by the improvement and solid performance of most of the team members in a rebuilding year. Our standout at the cross-over was Matt Twiddy who won 3 of his 4 matches, losing only to his opponent on the stacked Western team. Also to be mentioned is Sean Horton who without question is the most determined and grittiest player on the team. He certainly has the record for the most 5-game match wins this year. Both these players are returning next year and their continued improvement will be crucial to the hoped-for success of next year's team.

Men's Squash at McGill
MONTREAL, QC (19 Nov. 2005) - McGill hosted the Eastern Sectionals on Saturday between McGill, Toronto and Queen's. Both McGill and Toronto fielded stronger teams than last year while Queen's, having lost a number of key players to graduation, are in a rebuilding phase. Thus the outcome was not entirely unexpected, as Queen's lost its encounters with McGill and Toronto by the same 1-5 margin in matches won and lost. However, the scoreline does not indicate the closeness of many of the matches and the determination and effort put in by all of the Queen's players. With Toronto's 4-2 win over McGill, the final match count was Toronto 9, McGill 7 and Queen's 2.

The standout on the Queen's team was Sean Horton, the #3 player, who won both of his matches, by a 3-2 margin against Toronto and 3-1 against McGill. The win over Toronto was particularly noteworthy. Sean was down 8-2 in the fifth and deciding game of the match but settled down to play consistent and errorless squash when it was most important, and finally took the game with a 10-9 score. His effort was a big boost to Queen's morale and has inspired the team (at least going by road-home chit-chat) to train and practice even harder than before. This will be needed if the team is to reverse its fortunes at the Western Sectionals in January and continue its long run of playoff appearances.

Men's Squash Finishes with One Tie, One Loss Against McGill Team
KINGSTON, Ont (29 Oct. 2005) - Queen's hosted the McGill Men's Squash Team on Saturday in a double-round exhibition tournament. In the first round Queen's and McGill tied 4 matches apiece while McGill won the second round 5 matches to 3. The standout for Queen's was Sean Horton who won his matches against the #2 and #3 seeds on the McGill team. Queen's will meet McGill again, together with UofT, at the East Sectional taking place on November 19 at McGill.
