Women's Soccer Players Named OUA All Stars

Kingston, Ont. (November 1, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels have placed two players on to the OUA East division All Star teams.  Gaels striker Renee MacLellan of Kingston was the only Gael named a First Team OUA All Star as she led the Tricolour in scoring.  Queen's goalkeeper Hannah Shoichet of Victoria, B.C. was selected to the OUA Second Team after a season of splitting the position with Katie McKenna of Oakville, Ont.

The first place Ottawa Gee Gees are recognized with two major awards and Ryerson University also receives two major awards, following a breakout season.  University of Ottawa Amanda Robinson of Fredericton, N.B. receives the Most Valuable Player in the division.  Katarina Vulic of Oakville, Ont. is recognized with the Community Service award for her achievements in soccer, academics and community involvement.  Ryerson Ram striker Andrea Raso of Toronto, Ont. is the East Rookie of the Year with her coach Peyvand Mossavat receiving the division's Coach of the Year honours following a standout season in which the program finished in fifth place in the OUA East, their highest finish in program history.

Women's Soccer Upset 2-1 By RMC

Kingston, Ont. (October 24, 2007) -
The RMC Paladins made an early goal stand up as they upset the Queen's Golden Gaels 2-0 in OUA East quarterfinal action at Richardson Stadium Wednesday afternoon.  The Paladins scored three minutes into the game and again in the second half to record a win in the first appearance by an RMC female varsity team in the history of the school.

The Paladins took the play to the Gaels right from the opening kickoff and were rewarded with a corner kick.  Off the corner the ball was loose near the Queen's goal and finally Heather MacLellan of Kingston, Ont. was able to kick the ball by goalkeeper Hannah Shoichet of Victoria, B.C. to make it 1-0.

Queen's head coach Dave McDowell said the early goal was not what his team needed.  "Full value to RMC they created some chances and took them.  They defended really well and did not allow us to do a whole lot in terms of offensive chances".

The Paladins scored their insurance marker in the 59th minute on a counter attack when Laura Gray of Brookside, N.S. passed to Melanie Ross of Calgary, Alta. in the Queen's area.  Ross was able to chip her shot by Shoichet and propel RMC on their way to one of the biggest wins in school history.

RMC coach Chad Bealieu feels that while the early goal was important it was how his squad reacted after it that was key to the win.  "In four of the five previous games we have scored early and then let the other team tie the score.  It was important to score first but even more important to keep the lead into halftime".

RMC was full marks for their win as they carried the play to the Gaels outshooting them 10-3.  Beaulieu says this victory does not surprise him.  "The team we have here has worked hard and tried to carry a winning attitude even during the tough times.  Credit to the players and the approach that they have taken and the dedication they have shown which has laid a great foundation for us".

RMC moves on to the OUA East semifinals in Ottawa this weekend when they visit the first place Gee Gees.

Women's Soccer Blanks Carleton 2-0

Kingston, Ontario (October 20, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels won their final game heading into the playoffs 2-0 over the visiting Carleton Ravens Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.  The Gaels in a physical affair received a first half goal from Claire Parsons of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and an early second half goal from Renee MacLellan of Kingston, Ontario.

Parsons opened the scoring nine minutes into the game when her free kick from 30 yards out sailed into the Carleton net over goalkeeper Kate Shaughnessy of Ottawa, Ontario.  Parsons said the goal was off something she had been practising all week.  "At the last second it just curled a bit which I wasn't expecting.  After I hit it I thought it's going in the right spot and then it curled out a bit".

The second Gaels goal came just a minute after halftime when MacLellan controlled the ball eluded a couple of Carleton defenders and chipped the ball over Shaughnessy.

Queen's head coach Dave McDowell said anytime Carleton and Queen's play it is going to be a physical battle.  "There were some hard tackles and some late tackles but I'm not sure if they were nasty or clumsy.  Our girls certainly played hard with them and that is good to see".

The Gaels finish the regular season in third place and will host an OUA East quarterfinal game Wednesday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.  Carleton finishes in fourth and will host a Wednesday quarterfinal in Ottawa.

Women's Soccer Blasts Trent 5-0

Kingston, Ont. (October 14, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels exploded for a 5-0 over the visiting Trent Excalibur Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

Queen's scored twice in the first half on a penalty kick by Ali Skinner in the 19th minute and a shot by Laura Vanderlaan in the 34th minute.  In the second half the Gaels made it 3-0 on a Katie Dalziel goal four minutes after the restart off a Claire Parsons corner kick.  Queen's rounded out the scoring on two goals by Danielle Gibson in the 77th and 82nd minutes.

Gaels goalkeeper Hannah Shoichet recorded the shutout as her team outshot Trent 10-3.

Queen's runs their record to 7-1-7 and move to within two points of second place Carleton and Toronto.  The Gaels host Carleton next Saturday October 20th at 1pm at Richardson Stadium.

Women's Soccer Ties 1-1 With RMC

Kingston, Ont. (October 12, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels and RMC Paladins fought to a 1-1 tie Friday afternoon in Kingston.  The Paladins scored first on Queen's goalkeeper Katie McKenna ending her shutout streak at 552 minutes.

RMC took the 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game when a cross by Laura Gray forced McKenna to make a diving save.  However, the Queen's goalkeeper could not hang onto the ball and Paladins Kate Searle was able to drill the ball into the open net.

Queen's tied the game nine minutes later when Katie Dalziel scored.  Dalziel took a cross in the area and had her first shot stopped.  The rebound came back to her and she made a move on RMC goalkeeper Erica Pessotto and blasted the ball into the net.

The Gaels outshot RMC 6-4 including five in the opening half.  In the second half both teams played tight defence.

Queen's head coach Dave McDowell was not happy with his young team's performance.  "I thought RMC played quite well and did some good things against us but I think again it was another game where we were not prepared to come out here and play."

The point is the first ever for RMC against the Gaels and Paladins head coach Chad Beaulieu feels this should give his team confidence that they are getting better.  "This was a very important result for us and it will give us some momentum hopefully in a week when we host Ryerson and Toronto."

The tie takes the Gaels record to 6-1-7  tied for third with Toronto while RMC improves to 2-7-4 two points up on Nipissing for the sixth and final OUA East playoff spot.  Queen's takes to the field again Sunday October 14th at Richardson Stadium against the Trent Excalibur at 1pm.

Women's Soccer Blanks Trent 3-0, Ties Ryerson 0-0

Kingston, Ont. (October 8, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels had a successful weekend winning and tying their two road games.  Saturday afternoon against the host Trent Excalibur   Queen's took a 1-0 in the first half on a goal by Aleisha Marchant and added to it on second half markers from Sara Buckham and Laura Vanderlaan.  Queen’s goalkeeper Katie McKenna continued her stellar play recording her sixth straight shutout of the season and now has not conceded a goal in the 540 minutes she has played.  Sunday afternoon the Golden Gaels were held off the scoresheet but continued their air tight defence as they made it 380 straight minutes without giving up a goal.  Queen's is now 6-1-6 tied for third with the Toronto Varsity Blues and two points back of second place Carleton.  The Tricolour return to play at Richardson Stadium Friday October 12th at 3pm against the RMC Paladins and two days later at 1pm against the Trent Excalibur.

Women's Soccer Hands #1 Ottawa 1-0 Loss
Kingston, Ont. (October 3, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels handed the top ranked Ottawa Gee Gees their first loss of the season 1-0 Wednesday night in Kingston. The Gee Gees were 9-0-0 coming into the game but strong goalkeeping by Hannah Schoichet, Victoria, British Columbia and a goal on a set piece gave the Gaels the victory over the defending OUA champions.

Queen's scored the winning marker in the 63rd minute when Laura Johnstone's, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, free kick eluded everyone and ended up in the far corner of the Gee Gee net. Queen's head coach Dave McDowell said the goal came on a play that is a problem for goalkeepers. "A ball swung in on the post where we have a lot of players heading in towards the net. It is very difficult for goalies to deal with that ball or the potential touch on the ball".

As for Schoichet she saved all four shots that were on net and got a little help from the woodwork on a chance by Val May, Ottawa, Ontario that hit the cross bar. Gee Gee head coach Steve Johnson said that he warned his team the Gaels were getting better and would pose a challenge. "We told the girls that 9-0 was a great start but that we were in a similar situation to Queen's last year working through different players. We were struggling at that time to find ourselves and this exact same point last year was where we came together and I told them Queen's would give us a better game than the last time we played". In the previous meeting September 9th Ottawa won 1-0 but badly outchanced the Gaels.

In that game like Wednesday Schoichet was the story making big saves but McDowell told his team that the win is another good stepping stone. "I told them it is a fantastic win but don't get to high or to low. There is still a good part of the season to go over and you don't want this to be the pinnacle but the start of reaching the top of the mountain at the end of October".

The win improves Queen's to 5-1-5 taking over third place in the OUA East by a point over Toronto. The loss still leaves Ottawa five points ahead of second place Carleton. The Gaels are on the road this weekend at Trent Saturday afternoon and Ryerson Sunday afternoon. They return home Friday October 12th when they host the RMC Paladins at 3pm at Richardson Stadium.

Women's Soccer Ties Toronto 0-0
Toronto, Ont. (September 29, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels received another strong game from goalkeeper Katie McKenna as they fought to a 0-0 draw with the Varsity Blues in Toronto Saturday afternoon. McKenna increased her shutout streak to five games and has yet to give up a goal in the 450 minutes she has played so far this season. Saturday she made four saves all in the second half as the Gaels move their record to 4-1-5 and stay in fourth place in the OUA East a point back of the Varsity Blues. The Gaels are back in action at home this Wednesday night when they entertain the 8-0-0 and nationally ranked Ottawa Gee Gees at 5pm at Richardson Stadium.

Women's Soccer Wins Both Games 5-0, 4-1
Kingston, Ont. (September 23, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels swept their weekend home games blasting Laurentian 5-0 Saturday and Nipissing 4-1 Sunday afternoon. The Gaels who had struggled with their scoring touch found it from forward Renee MacLellan who scored two goals each day. Ali Skinner, Erin Smith and Courtney Devane tallied on Saturday with Claire Parsons and Katie Dalziel getting the other goals Sunday. For Queen's head coach Dave McDowell said he was pleased to see the scoring touch return to his forwards MacLellan and Parsons, "Last week we started to create chances and this weekend we started to put them away". He added Parsons and MacLellan's speed causes problems for defences, "They are a nice due in that they are both very fast and can get behind defenders. In the first half Sunday we struggled a bit understanding that they want to run a little bit and once we got balls behind their back three it caused Nipissing problems".

The six points put the Gaels in third place a point back of second place Toronto who the Gaels face next Saturday afternoon in Toronto and three points ahead of fourth place Carleton. Queen's is not back to Richardson Stadium again until Wednesday October 3rd when they host the undefeated and first place Ottawa Gee Gees at 5pm.

Kingston, Ont. (September 16, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels continue to struggle to find the net as they tied a pair of road games up north 1-1 with Nipissing Saturday and Sunday 0-0 with Laurentian. On Saturday in North Bay, the Gaels took the lead 15 minutes in on a goal by Renee MacLellan but the home side tied it late in the first half when Alexandria Instance scored. Queen's controlled most of the play in the second half but could not capitalize on their chances. The following day in Sudbury the Gaels again dominated ball possession and had numerous scoring chances but their finishing failed them. Queen's goalkeeper Katie McKenna recorded the shutout Sunday making five saves. McKenna has yet to concede a goal in the four games she has played and the Gaels as a team have only allowed two goals this season. The Tricolour sit in fourth right now in the OUA East with a 2-1-4 record and return home to Richardson Stadium next weekend to host Laurentian Saturday September 22nd at noon and Nipissing Sunday September 23rd also at noon.

Ottawa, Ont. (September 9, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels lost their first game of the OUA season 1-0 to the Ottawa Gee Gees Sunday afternoon in the Nation's Capital. The Ravens took play took the Gaels in the first 15 minutes but goalkeeper Katie McKenna was solid making two key stops to keep the game at 0-0. Queen's picked up play and in the last few minutes of the first half tested Carleton goalkeeper and former Gael Kate Shaughnessy forcing her to make some saves. In the second half both teams played defensively happy to take the point as Queen's has not given up a goal yet this OUA season (270 minutes), with two by McKenna. For the Gaels they are now 1-0-2 and their next game is Wednesday September 12th at RMC at 4:30pm. Women's Soccer Ties Toronto 0-0
Kingston, Ont. (September 2, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels and Toronto Varsity Blues played to 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon in Kingston. The game was a defensive struggle with both teams combining for just 5 total shots on goal. The best chances came in the second half 30 minutes in when Gael Sarah Buckham was called for a handball in the penalty area. Blues Heidi Bargmann stepped up to take the spot kick against Queen's goalkeeper Hannah Soichet but Bargmann's shot went over the net. In all the former All Canadian at UBC, Soichet made three saves while her counterpart Katie Rowland made 2. After the game Gaels head coach Dave McDowell said he was not pleased with some of the effort put forth by his side. "Clearly we're not fit enough to play the way we want to right now. Our midfield pressence was not as good as we would like". He added that it is not all doom and gloom "There are lots of good things with a young team but lots of things that we need to work on". Queen's returns to action next weekend in Ottawa against Carleton Saturday September 8th and Ottawa the following day. They return home to play Saturday September 22nd at noon when they host the Laurentian Voyageurs. Admission to the game is free.

The Gaels were playing without six starters who graduated from their CIS silver medal winning team. Robinson took the ball down the left side and crossed across the area to an unmarked Laura Johnstone who blasted the ball into an empty net. In the 27th minute of the second half Johnstone became the set up person as she crossed a ball to Renee MacLellan who put home the insurance goal for the Gaels. 2nd Annual Queen's Greg Hulse Soccer Memorial Senior All Star Game
Kingston, ON (May 23, 2007) - The 2nd annual Queen's Greg Hulse Soccer Memorial will be held June 2, 2007 at Richardson Stadium. The Queen's Varsity Soccer Teams, with the support of the University and local High Schools, will hold both a Senior Girls and Boys All-Star Game in memory of Greg Hulse. His passion for the game of soccer and for the schools he attended was immense and the All-Star Games represent the celebration of the game he loved to play.

Last year's event showcased over 80 local athletes in 2 exciting All-Star Games. Prior to the games, players and coaches from both the Queen's Men's and Women's teams, and local High School coaches conducted morning training sessions for the All-Stars. Overall, it was quite a success as not only were monies raised for the Jamaica Mission, but also was a great community event. Players that participated in the event represented their respective high schools with pride and were provided with a uniform for the event. Participants were provided with gold and silver medals following the match.

Furthermore, the event was also able to raise funds for the Jamaica Mission, a charity that Greg and his family actively support. This mission is a series of projects run by the St Patrick's Foundation operating under the Archdiocese of St. Patrick's Jamaica. The Foundation (Kingston, Jamaica) operates health clinics, community development programs; remedial school programs, and assists with low income families and developing youth programs. Ultimately, the St. Patrick's Foundation provides community support, relief and a proactive alternative to the cycle of poverty and violence in the region.

Local soccer clubs such as Kingston United and Cataraqui Clippers were also involved. Both clubs provided ball boys and girls for the events.

An admission fee will be set to raise funds for the Jamaica Mission. Admission fee will be $5 for adults, $3 for high school students with an ID card, and $2 for children between ages of 5-12. Children under 5 will be admitted free of charge. There will also be fundraising during the event with a 50/50 draw and other raffles for replica jerseys.

Please come out and support the local soccer talent and pay tribute to a person who touched the lives of everyone he met. His compassionate character, his tenacious spirit, his will to compete, and his sportsmanship will be remembered forever.

Women's Soccer Loses 3-1 to UBC - Wins CIS Silver
Victoria, BC (November 12, 2006) - A very entertaining Championship game with a pro UBC crowd, saw the UBC Thunderbirds gain the right to hoist the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy at UVic’s Centennial Stadium as they defeated the Queen’s Golden Gaels 3-1.

The final started out fast and furious. Queen’s was the first to be able to take advantage of wet field conditions at Centennial Stadium as CIS player of the Year, Eilish McConville, won a head ball in the midfield, the ball dropped for striker Renee MacLellan who took advantage of a slip by a UBC midfielder and slotted the ball behind UBC keeper Jaclyn Dennett for the early 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute of the game.

Neither team was willing to sit back and be patient as each worked hard to created several offensive opportunities. In the 23rd minute, McConville took a terrific strike that hit the crossbar. In the 28th minute, Thunderbird’s forward Stephanie Thibert had a wonderful individual effort, outpacing the Queen’s defence and did all the work to put the ball behind goalie Katie McKenna to even the score at one apiece. UBC had six corner kicks throughout the half and one of them finally paid off at the 42nd minute as Amy Bobb got on the end of a rebound from keeper McKenna and scored the second and winning goal of the game for UBC. Bobb was also a goal scorer in their semi-final game over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The second half began with sustained pressure from UBC. Thunerbird’s Thibert continued to cause all kind of havoc for the Queen’s defenders as her work rate seemed to get better as the game wore on. In the 66th minute, UBC’s Jessica Briker put over a perfectly placed cross from the right hand side that Caitlin Davie was able to control and hit it with a left foot strike that eluded McKenna. UBC was not content with the lead as they continued to pressure until the final whistle winning numerous corner kicks.

“This shows that we can win in more than one way,” said UBC Head Coach Dick Mosher. “Today we came from behind. It seemed we needed that little bit of adversity to wake us up. But we really won the way that is characteristic for our team…from defending from front to back.”

“We gave away way too many corner kicks and set plays,” added Queen’s Head Coach Dave McDowell. “We did a good job in the first half but in the second half, give them credit, they were the better team.”

The player of the game for UBC was midfielder Davie while the MVP for Queen’s was goal scorer McLellan.

UBC wins their 5th CIS Championship gold medal in nine appearances. The last time they won was back to back Championship seasons in 2002 and 2003.

Queen's Soccer Takes Two From Ravens
Kingston, Ont (September 10th, 2006) - Chris Gencarelli scored on a penalty kick with 2 minutes left to lift the Queen's Golden Gaels to a 2-1 win over the Carleton Ravens in men's soccer at Richardson Stadium Sunday afternoon. Gencarelli took the penalty kick after a Carleton player committed a hand ball in the area. The Gaels had taken the lead in the first half on a header by Wade Ennis off a corner kick by David Kerr-Vayne in the 18th minute. Carleton tied it 12 minutes into the second half off a header by Kofi Ilboudi. After the equalizer the game got a little chippy as both teams had chances before the Gaels penalty kick which came off a free kick by the Gaels Jared King. King's free kick into the area was neatly backheeled by Gencarelli which resulted in a Raven player stopping the ball with his hand. The Gaels improve their OUA record to 2-0-1 while Carleton slips to 1-1-1.

The women's soccer team blanked Carleton 2-0 scoring in each half. In the first half Kaley Robinson headed in a cross from Renee McLellan in the 30th minute to get the Gaels on the board. With the win the Gaels move to 3-0 while Carleton suffers its first loss in OUA regular season play falling to 2-1.

First Annual Queen's Greg Hulse Memorial Game a Huge Success
KINGSTON, ON (June 5, 2006) - The First Annual Queen's Greg Hulse Memorial was held over the weekend at Richardson Stadium. Despite less than favourable weather conditions, the event was a success as both Senior Girls and Senior Boys Soccer All-Stars played exciting matches in memory of former local player Greg Hulse.

The day began early Saturday morning at Lasalle High School where players from both the Senior Girls and Senior Boys had a light training session. High school coaches along with coaches and players from both the Queen's Men's and Women's Varsity Soccer Teams held a light session for the teams to prepare for the day.

The event officially kicked off with the Senior Girls All-Star Game at 1pm as the North Team defeated the South by a score of 2-0. After a scoreless first half, the North Team pulled ahead after an excellent strike by FSS player Jamee Baldry off the post in the 53rd minute. Baldry followed up with another excellent strike in the 73rd minute.

Despite losing several players to injury (Robyn Sweet (NDSS), Elissa Riel (RND), the South team battled on valiantly but were unable to solve the solid goalkeeping of Amanda Waters (ESS) and Paula Washington (KCVI).

Game MVP's were awarded to the North's Jamee Baldry and the South's Genevive Lacasse (KCVI).

The Senior Boy's Game followed with the South Team defeating the North Team by a score of 3-0. Again, after a scoreless first half, KCVI's Eric Lee and Ben Tennant responded for 2 goals in the 2nd half. Evan Minthorn (NDSS) followed up with an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when he deftly chipped in a goal over the goal-keeper from 25 yards out. Team South's goal-keper Robert McMillen was outstanding throughout the match and saved several shots in the closing minutes of the match.

Game MVP's were awarded to Chad Reeves (FSS) for Team North and Rob McMillan of Team South (NDSS).

Local clubs such as the Cataraqui Clippers, Kingston United and Limestone City FC were also involved as they supplied ball boys and ball girls for both games. They also participated in mini soccer games at half-time of each game.

The winning teams were presented with a trophy by Greg's father Jonathan Hulse. Bill Sparrow and Kelly Smith of Queen's Athletics were on hand to assist Mr. Hulse with the trophy presentations. The winners and runners-up were presented with a gold and silver medal respectively.

Team photos and other pictures taken during the game will be up on the Queen's soccer website in a few weeks at www.queenssoccer.ca

The admission fee and the two 50/50 draws will go towards the charity that Greg supported, the Jamaica Mission Fund.
