Queen's advances to OUA Final Four with 2-1 Win Over Toronto

Toronto, Ont. (October 27, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels have advanced to the OUA Final Four after a 2-1 win over the host Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday afternoon.

The Gaels who defeated Ryerson 2-1 earlier this week in the quarterfinals fell behind ten minutes into the game on a goal by Evan Milward of Kingston, Ont.  Queen's tied the game in the 33rd minute on a goal by Nick Milonas of Kingston, Ont. and recorded the eventual winner ten minutes after halftime when Alex Makin who battled injuries all season scored his first goal of the season.

The Gaels now travel to Carleton University next Saturday November 3rd for the league semifinals where they will face the CIS #2 ranked York Lions from Toronto.

Men's Soccer Defeats Ryerson 2-1

Kingston, Ont. (October 24, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels have advanced to the OUA East semifinals after a 2-1 win over the visiting Ryerson Rams at Richardson Stadium Wednesday afternoon.  The Gaels scored three minutes into the game and added another in the 80th minute which turned out to be the winner.

Queen's struck right away against the Rams when Nick Milonas of Kingston, Ont. passed to Brent Lukowski of Oakville, Ont. in the Ryerson penalty area.  Lukowski beat a pair of defenders and passed the ball to Mike Arnold of London, Ont. who put the ball in a wide open net.

The Gaels added to their lead with ten minutes left in the game when Milonas crossed half and seeing the Ryerson goalkeeper cheating off his line chipped the ball over his head and into the net.  Milonas he thought about swinging the ball out to the sideline but saw the Ram keeper was not expecting a shot.  "I saw him sort of trickling off his line a little bit, thought I would give it a try and was fortunate that it ended up in the net".

Ryerson made the last few minutes interesting after they got a goal in the 84th minute from Frank Morelli of Thornhill, Ont.  The Gaels tightened up defensively after that and Ryerson did not get another shot off the remaining six minutes of the game.

Queen's head coach Chris Gencarelli says he told his team before the game that this was the start of a brand new season.  "It does not matter what we have done in the regular season. Now we have to really pick it up and get the results and overall I thought we played well and deserved the win".

The Gaels move on to face the second place Toronto Varsity Blues in the OUA East semifinals.  The game will be played Saturday October 27th in Toronto at 4pm.

Men's Soccer Loses 2-0 To Carleton Ravens

Kingston, Ont. (October 20, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels were defeated Saturday 2-0 by the CIS #1 ranked Carleton Ravens at Richardson Stadium.  The Ravens received two goals one in each half from striker Abdullah Abunafeesa of Ottawa, Ontario.

Abunafeesa scored his first just eight minutes into the game when he raced to a ball and chipped it over Queen's goalkeeper Sean Martin-Courtright of Calgary, Alberta.

In the second half Abunafeesa scored just five minutes after the restart when he headed in a corner kick from teammate Chris Huxtable of Surrey, British Columbia.  Abunafeesa says the second half goal came from a piece of good fortune.  "Luckily the ball went over the first defender and it came a bit low so I just had to get low and flick it into the net".

The Gaels best chance came midway through the first half when Tyler Swan of Whitby, Ontario got a chance in the Carleton area but his shot just went wide of the post.

Queen's defender Andrew Jarvis while acknowledging the Ravens are one of the best teams in the country the two goals Saturday came off Tricolour mistakes.  "They're a good team and you have to give them credit. They are fast but I have to say their two goals came on our defensive mistakes we have to take full responsibility for them".

The loss for Queen's gives them a 6-4-4 record to finish the regular season in third place in the OUA East and home field advantage for a divisional quarterfinal this Wednesday afternoon.  The Ravens head into the postseason 13-0-1 in first place and will host a East semifinal game next Saturday October 27th in Ottawa.

Men's Soccer Ties Trent 0-0

Kingston, Ont. (October 14, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels dominated play but could not finish as they tied the visiting Trent Excalibur 0-0 Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

The Gaels controlled ball possession for most of the game and had numerous chances but could only get three shots on the Trent net, all in the first half.  Queen's had a lot of their attempts at goal fly over or wide of the visitors net.

The tie leaves the Gaels in third place in the OUA East two points back of Toronto with a record of 6-3-4.  Queen's hosts first place and unbeaten Carleton Saturday afternoon October 20th at Richardson Stadium starting at 3:15pm.

Men's Soccer Doubles RMC 4-2

Kingston, Ont. (October 12, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels bounced back from a tough weekend to defeat the RMC Paladins 4-2 Friday night in Kingston.  The Gaels who lost and tied at Trent and Ryerson six days ago took control with two goals in the first half.

Queen's got things going right from the opening whistle taking a 1-0 at the seven minute mark.  The goal started with Nick Milonas (Kingston, Ontario) crossing the ball to Tyler Swan (Whitby, Ontario) who directed the ball into the RMC net.

The home team made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute off a set piece.  Swan sent a corner kick into the RMC area and Andrew Jarvis (Thunder Bay, Ontario) jumped above everyone to head the ball into the back of the net.

In the second half Milonas scored a brilliant goal when he blasted a shot from 20 yards out into the RMC net just eight minutes after the intermission.

Twenty minutes later RMC broke into the score column when Chris Shenk (Port Hope, Ontario) hit a 25 yard shot that went in off the post.

Andrew Colosimo (Thunder Bay) of the Gaels and RMC's Trevor Hilson (North Bay, Ontario) traded goals in the 90th minute.

Queen's head coach Chris Gencarelli said the team came out stronger than last weekend especially Milonas.  "Before the season started he and I talked about the fact that I would rely on him to be a leader and he has come a long way for us in that regard."

The win makes the Gaels 6-3-3 a point back of second place Toronto.  The Paladins fall to 1-8-3 on the season.  Queen's hosts Trent Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium in a game that Gencarelli says holds a chance for revenge.  "They stole three points from us last weekend.  We played okay but now we have to play better and we're looking forward to Sunday."  Kickoff is 3:15pm.

Men’s Soccer Loses 2-1 At Trent, Ties 1-1 At Ryerson

Kingston, Ont. (October 8, 2007) – The Queen’s Golden Gaels gained just one point from two road games this weekend.  In Peterborough Saturday, Steve Irish gave the Gaels the lead in the first half but Trent Excalibur Mark Gardiner tied the score late in the half and Stephen Davis scored early in the second to give the host team the 2-1 win.  Sunday in Toronto Brent Lukowski scored in the 68th minute to make it 1-0 Queen’s but Ryerson scored two minutes later to tie it at 1.  Gaels goalkeeper Tyler Lewis made his first two starts of the season on the weekend making a save on a penalty kick against Trent and six saves against the Rams.  The one point from the two games leaves Queen’s tied for second with Toronto both teams having 18 points.  Queen’s is home at Richardson Stadium this weekend to RMC Friday night October 12th at 5:15pm and Trent Sunday October 14th at 3:15pm.

Men's Soccer Loses 4-0 At Toronto
Toronto, Ont. (September 29, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels lost just their second game of the season 4-0 at Toronto to the Varsity Blues Saturday afternoon. The Gaels fell behind 1-0 in the 36th minute of the first half on a goal by Nordo Gooden as they were outshot 5-1 in the first half. In the second half the Blues exploded for three goals in 14 minutes with Michael Bialy scoring two in a row at the nine and 20 minute marks of the second half. Nevin de Korompay scored three minutes after Bialy's second to round out the scoring and drop the Gaels record to 5-2-2. Queen's who still sits in second place in the OUA East received eight saves from goalkeeper Sean Martin-Courtright. The Gaels are back in action next weekend when they go to Peterborough to play the Trent Excalibur Saturday October 6th and the Ryerson Rams Sunday October 7th.

Men's Soccer Ranked 10th In CIS
Kingston, Ont. (September 25, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels have made their first appearance in the CIS top ten rankings this week. The Gaels who won both their games last weekend over the Laurentian Voyageurs and Nipissing Lakers are 5-1-2 and sit in second in the OUA East division. Queen's has won their last three by a combined score of 7-1 and are back in the top ten for the first time since last season when they won the East division regular season title. The Gaels are one of only three OUA teams in the top ten.

Men's Soccer Sweeps Weekend Games 2-0, 2-1

Kingston, Ont. (September 23, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels gained a pair of wins this weekend defeating Laurentian 2-0 Saturday afternoon and Nipissing 2-1 Sunday. The games played at Richardson Stadium were physical affairs especially Sunday against the Lakers as the North Bay school had beaten the Gaels 1-0 eight days ago. On Saturday Queen's got goals from Tyler Swan in the 36th minute and Nick Milonas in the 47th minute. Goalkeeper Sean Martin-Courtright recorded the shutout.

Sunday Queen's fell behind 1-0 in the 28th minute when Alagie Gaye scored off a Nipissing free kick but the home side tied things six minutes before the half when a goal mouth scramble resulted in David Kerr-Vayne getting the ball over the line. In the second half the Gaels had some great chances before Tyler Swan beat a couple of defenders and blasted a shot low into the far corner to make it 2-1. Swan said head coach Chris Gencarelli has been on him to shoot the ball and on the winning goal he finally heeded the advice. "Didn't shoot much in the first half I just tried to bring it to the net. He is a coach and I listened to what he said and scored".

Coach Gencarelli said the six points the Gaels gained from the weekend wins are invaluable, "That was our objective this weekend, it wasn't the prettiest but the most important thing is we got the six points".

Queen's with the wins moves into second place in the OUA East with a 5-1-2 record four points ahead of third place Nipissing and two points back of top spot currently held by the Carleton Ravens. The Gaels are in Toronto next Saturday afternoon to face the Varsity Blues who sit in fourth in the league standings. The team returns to Richardson Stadium Friday October 12th when they host the RMC Paladins at 5:15pm.

Men's Soccer Loses 1-0 At Nipissing, Wins 3-0 At Laurentian
Kingston, Ont. (September 16, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels learned a lesson Saturday in a loss and applied it to win Sunday in a Northern Ontario road trip. Saturday the Gaels gave up an early goal to the host North Bay school Nipissing when Eric Yung scored in the 19th minute. Queen's controlled ball possession the rest of the game and despite a bunch of chances could not solve goalkeeper Matt Likuski. After the game Gaels head coach Chris Gencarelli said the team needed to be prepared to play right from the opening whistle. Sunday in Sudbury Queen's did just that scoring in the 15th minute on a Brent Lukowski goal and iced the game with two goals in the last five minutes. In the 86th minute Stephane Detchou took a pass on the counter attack off a corner kick and broke in on Laurentian goalkeeper Andre Gomes beating him between the legs. In the game's final minute Nick Milonas rounded out the scoring when he took a Mike Arnold pass in the area and roofed the shot into the top corner to make it 3-0 Queen's. The Gaels improve with the win Sunday to 3-1-2 good for third in the OUA East, a point back of Nipissing who visits Queen's next Sunday September 23rd at 2:15pm at Richardson Stadium. On Saturday September 22nd the Gaels will host Laurentian at Richardson Stadium game time is also 2:15pm.

Men's Soccer Scores 4-0 Win at RMC
Kingston, Ont. (September 12, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels stayed unbeaten Wednesday night with a 4-0 win at RMC over the Paladins. The Gaels who had tied their previous two games controlled ball possession the entire game scoring all their goals in the first half. Queen's opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a goal by Wade Ennis, with Steve Irish scoring a pair at the 38th and 44th minute marks, and Jordan Brooks rounded out the offensive explosion with the first of his Gaels career in the final minute of the half. In the second half Queen's moved the ball well and controlled the play pleasing their head coach Chris Gencarelli. "We were sluggish at the start of the game" said Gencarelli "But our goal in the second half was to control the ball and not concede a goal which is what we did". With the win the Gaels improve to 2-0-2 as they head on the road for a pair of games this weekend at Laurentian and Nipissing. Queen's is back home September 22nd and 23rd when they entertain the Sudbury and North Bay schools.

Men's Soccer Ties At Carleton 1-1
Ottawa, Ont. (September 8, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels remained unbeaten in OUA East division play after a 1-1 tie at Carleton University Saturday afternoon with the Ravens. The game played at Keith Harris Field was scoreless until the 75th minute when Queen's midfielder David Kerr-Vayne scored after being set up by Tyler Swan. The goal was a reward for the Gaels who had been pressuring the Ravens for most of the second half. Carleton tied the game in the 88th minute against the run of play when off a free kick Ahmad Berjawi crossed the ball into the area Paul Waiganjo headed it by Queen's goalkeeper Sean Martin-Courtright to salvage a point for the home side. Queen's record improves to 1-0-2 and they will next play at RMC this Wednesday September 12th at 4:30pm. The men are next at home Saturday September 22nd against the Laurentian Voyageurs at 2:15pm at Richardson Stadium.

Men's Soccer Ties Toronto 1-1
Kingston, Ont. (September 2, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels scored in injury time to gain a 1-1 tie with the Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday afternoon in Kingston. The game was a heated and physical one between last season's top two teams in the East division. Toronto had the only chance of the first half early in the eighth minute when Evan Milward hit a free kick from 30 yards out that required Queen's goalkeeper Sean Martin-Courtright to make a diving save. In the second half action picked up with the Gaels carrying the play. However with just five minutes left Milward put a cross to Mike Bialy who left the ball at the top of the area for Joe Rini who blasted a hard low shot into the Gaels net. With Queen's forcing play to get the equalizer they were rewarded in the last 30 seconds when the Toronto goalkeeper and a defender got tangled at the top of the area and Gael Stephane Detchou jumped on the mistake and put the ball into the open Blues net. The play would be the last one of the game as the whistle was blown on the restart. Queen's head coach Chris Gencarelli said the game shows a great quality in his team. "Usually it takes most of the season to get that never say die attitude that we displayed today and I couldn't be happier for the guys they are working really hard out there". Queen's go on the road for the first time next weekend when they face Carleton next Saturday afternoon in Ottawa. They return to Richardson Stadium Saturday September 22nd when they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at 2:15pm.

Men's Soccer Beats Ryerson 3-1

Kingston, Ont. (September 1, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels won their OUA home opener 3-1 over the visiting Ryerson Rams Saturday in Kingston. The game was the first league play for Queen's with new head coach Chris Gencarelli. The former Gael star replaced Al MacVicar who stepped down for personal reasons. In the game Queen's opened the scoring when striker Stephane Detchou broke behind the Ryerson defence and blasted a shot by goalkeeper Robert Paolozzi. The visitors from Toronto bounced right back to tie things four minutes later on a set piece. Off a free kick Luca Nalli headed in a cross by Queen's goalkeeper Sean Martin-Courtright. In the second half the two teams played tight defensive soccer until the 23rd minute when Gaels rookie Mike Arnold scored a highlight reel goal. Arnold took the ball just outside the Rams penalty area and juggled it off his knee through two defenders and around the goalie before side footing the ball into the empty net. With Ryerson pushing for the equalizer the Gaels new quick strike offence replied just three minutes later. Veteran midfielder Nick Milonas took a pass from Dan McBride and streaked into the left side of the area where he deposited a shot by Paolozzi. Gaels head coach Chris Gencarelli said the win was a prime example of the rewards the new offensive scheme presents to his team. "Rocky start at the beginning of the game but the guys picked it up and the second half was a lot betterz" stated Gencarelli. He added that the final Queen's goal showed the new system at its best "It is to the other team with a quick transition. Nick Milonas made a great run and Dan McBride tackled the guy, had the ball and quickly got it up to Nick". The Gaels return to action Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 3:15pm at Richardson Stadium.

Kingston, ON (June 6, 2007) - Canada's Under 20 men's team were dominant Wednesday night with a convincing 4-0 victory over the United States in front of 3,382 at Queen's University's Richardson Stadium. The Canadians jumped on the visitors right from the start as Edmonton, Alberta striker Tousaint Ricketts scored two minutes into the match. Ricketts who would dominate the entire night scored the opening goal with a shot that got by sliding American goaltender Diego Restrepo. Canada continued to apply pressure on the US and were rewarded again in the 19th minute when a shot deflected to Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault (Montreal, Quebec) who promptly blasted the ball by Restrepo for a 2-0 lead. Ricketts was at it again ten minutes later as he displayed his fantastic speed to pull away from the American defenders and fire a shot into the top of the net to give Canada a 3-0 lead which they carried into halftime. At halftime the money raised from Saturday's Greg Hulse Memorial high school soccer games was presented by Queen's soccer to the Hulse family in the form of a cheque for $500. The second half started with the United States trying to press offensively but they could not penetrate a tough Canadian defence. In the 65th minute Ricketts completed his hat trick as he got behind the American defence and easily beat Restrepo with a shot. The US continued to press to try and break the shutout but could not get their few shots to elude Canadian goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (Edmonton, Alberta) and the final whistle blew with Canada winning 4-0. The victory erased the 4-1 loss they suffered against the Americans Sunday in Ottawa at Frank Clair Stadium. For the Canadian Soccer Association they are now 4-0-1 ever at Richardson Stadium courtesy of wins by the Women's National Team (over Australia), the Men's Senior National Team (twice over Belize) and last year's 1-1 tie and Wednesday night's win over the United States by our Under 20 men's team. The win for Canada is their final game before the June 15th deadline to submit their team roster to FIFA for next month's Under 20 World Cup being held in this country for the first time ever. Canada will finish their pre tournament schedule with a final friendly in Edmonton against the Czech Republic on June 18th before opening their Group A action in Toronto versus Chile on Canada Day. 2nd Annual Queen's Greg Hulse Soccer Memorial Senior All Star Game
Kingston, ON (May 23, 2007) - The 2nd annual Queen's Greg Hulse Soccer Memorial will be held June 2, 2007 at Richardson Stadium. The Queen's Varsity Soccer Teams, with the support of the University and local High Schools, will hold both a Senior Girls and Boys All-Star Game in memory of Greg Hulse. His passion for the game of soccer and for the schools he attended was immense and the All-Star Games represent the celebration of the game he loved to play.

Last year's event showcased over 80 local athletes in 2 exciting All-Star Games. Prior to the games, players and coaches from both the Queen's Men's and Women's teams, and local High School coaches conducted morning training sessions for the All-Stars. Overall, it was quite a success as not only were monies raised for the Jamaica Mission, but also was a great community event. Players that participated in the event represented their respective high schools with pride and were provided with a uniform for the event. Participants were provided with gold and silver medals following the match.

Furthermore, the event was also able to raise funds for the Jamaica Mission, a charity that Greg and his family actively support. This mission is a series of projects run by the St Patrick's Foundation operating under the Archdiocese of St. Patrick's Jamaica. The Foundation (Kingston, Jamaica) operates health clinics, community development programs; remedial school programs, and assists with low income families and developing youth programs. Ultimately, the St. Patrick's Foundation provides community support, relief and a proactive alternative to the cycle of poverty and violence in the region.

Local soccer clubs such as Kingston United and Cataraqui Clippers were also involved. Both clubs provided ball boys and girls for the events.

An admission fee will be set to raise funds for the Jamaica Mission. Admission fee will be $5 for adults, $3 for high school students with an ID card, and $2 for children between ages of 5-12. Children under 5 will be admitted free of charge. There will also be fundraising during the event with a 50/50 draw and other raffles for replica jerseys.

Please come out and support the local soccer talent and pay tribute to a person who touched the lives of everyone he met. His compassionate character, his tenacious spirit, his will to compete, and his sportsmanship will be remembered forever.
