Men's Rugby OUA Preview
Markham, Ont. (November 8, 2007) - The Queen's University Golden Gaels and the Brock University Badgers will compete for this year's Ontario University Athletics (OUA) men's rugby championship at Fletcher's Fields in Markham this Saturday, November 10th at 2:00pm, presented by Rugby Canada. The game is a re-match of the 2005 and 2006 bronze medal games which saw the Badgers defeat the Golden Gaels 23-13 and 7-3, respectively. Queen's has won 11 OUA championships in the past twenty years, the most recent title come in 2001. Brock, however, has yet to win a provincial banner and look to make history this weekend after coming close in recent years.
The Golden Gaels finished the regular season with a 5-1 record before moving to playoff action and blowing out Trent University by a score of 99-0 and defeating the University of Western Ontario 18-13 in last weekend's semi-final match-up. Fourth-year veteran Bryn Davies, a scrum-half from Schomberg, Ontario, is the OUA leading scorer. Davies has tallied 54 points total, scoring three tries, 15 converts and three penalty goals on the season. In the display against Trent, Davies was the biggest contributor on the day with two tries and six converts for 22 points.
Alistair Clark (Oakville, Ont.), a second-year flanker for Queen's and 2006 OUA East Rookie of the Year, has also established himself as an offensive threat this season, recording five tries in six regular season games. The Queen's defense has proved resilient in conceding the fewest number of points, 52, in regular season play. The Golden Gaels will look to both their offensive flair and stringent defense to overtake Brock.
Brock, the 2005 and 2006 OUA bronze medal recipients, will take confidence from their 26-7 convincing victory against Queen's on October 5, heading into Saturday's championship match. The Badgers had another impressive campaign ending their regular season with a 4-2 record and 21 points, landing them in second spot behind their rival Gaels. In their playoff run, the Badgers shutout the Royal Military College 26-0 prior to upsetting the defending 2006 champion McMaster Marauders 11-5.
Brock's offense and defense are second in the OUA behind Queen's, scoring 245 points and conceding only 67 in the regular season. Rory McDonnell (Brantford, Ont.) a rookie flyhalf, is his team's leading producer of points. He has demonstrated his consistency in scoring 49 points on the season from one try, 16 converts and four penalty goals, in his OUA debut. Third-year student-athlete, Jonathon Cregg (Oshawa, Ont.) scored six tries in as many games and strives to carry his streak forward to help Brock claim their first ever OUA championship.

Men's Rugby Defeats Western 18-13
Kingston, Ont. (November 3, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels have advanced to the OUA Rugby Final with an 18-13 semi-final victory over the visiting Western Mustangs held Saturday afternoon in Kingston.
The Gaels, who defeated the Mustangs in Kingston during the regular season 16-13, were able to use timely kicking to help the punch their ticket to next week’s gold medal game in Markham, Ont.
Queen’s took the lead four minutes into the game when Scrumhalf Bryn Davies of Schomberg, Ont., connected on a long 40 metre penalty kick to make the score 3-0.
Davies felt making the first kick set the tone for him the rest of the game.
"There was a big crowd out there and I just had to keep my focus,” said Davies. “Once I got that first one it sort of eased my mind and got me in a rhythm".
The Gaels increased the score to 8-0, 13 minutes later when Alaistair Clark of Oakville, Ont. carried the ball over for a try.
Nine minutes later Western made a move as Queen's Colin Frenke of Oakville was sent off for ten minutes for foul play. The Mustangs took advantage of the shorthanded Gaels and scored a try when Marcus Mitchell of Ancaster, Ont. broke a tackle and ran in from 20 metres out to make it 8-5.
The second half saw Queen's start quickly again with them pressuring the Mustangs zone. After Steve Shortly of Port Perry, Ont. was stopped just short of a try, the Gaels swung the ball the other way and Sean Duke of Vancouver, B.C. was able to touch it down for a try. Davies added the convert giving the Gaels a ten point lead at 15-5.
Queen's head coach Peter Huigenbos says the team had talked at halftime about being more disciplined and try to build on their lead.
"We were playing defence almost the entire first half and we were still leading. So we talked about cleaning things up, get down into their end and did so with a great play which Sean Duke finished off".
Western did not fold and came right back at Queen's getting a successful penalty kick from Andrew Buxton-Forman of Oakville to close to within seven points.
Six minutes after the penalty Mustangs Colin Brown of Toronto, Ont. blocked a Queen's kick and scooped up the ball and ran 10 metres to score a try. Buxton-Forman missed on the convert to keep it a two point game.
Twenty minutes into the second half the Gaels finished off the scoring when they were awarded a penalty kick which Davies made from 30 metres with Western players on the field and sideline trying to rattle him. Davies says he felt great when that penalty went through "It was such an important moment in the game and it was great when it went over the bar".
When the final whistle blew the Gaels celebrated a berth in the OUA Final and Huigenbos said the team fought through injuries and a tough opponent.
"We played in front of a great crowd on a day that felt like August,” said Huigenbos. Playing against Western, it was a heated affair but our guys fed off that emotion and finished out this game great".
Queen's advances to the OUA Rugby Final set for next Saturday, November 10th in Markham at Fletcher Fields. The Gaels will faceoff against the only team to beat them this season the Brock Badgers. On Saturday, the Badgers defeated McMaster in Hamilton 11-5. The gold medal final is scheduled for 2:00pm.
Notes: All the Queen's players said the large crowd at Kingston Field made the victory even better. A group of fans wore bright orange touques with a gold Q on them.

Queens RFC Tames Brock Badgers in Home Opener - Queens – 11 Brock – 6
Kingston, Ont (September 9th, 2006) - In the first regular season game of the year, the Queen’s Men’s Rugby Team showed the improvements made since last years campaign. No doubt the loss of the bronze medal at the end of last season was fresh in the minds of the players as they took the field looking to exact revenge on the Brock Badgers, led by full back Jared Selby.
Queen’s was first to draw blood, when early penalty was converted by Bryn Davies to take QRFC up 3-0, minutes into the first half, much to the delight of the large crowd assembled around Kingston Field. Brock was quick to reply with a nearly identical scenario, which left the game tied at 3-3. It was obvious early on that defense would be a key point in the match. With both teams playing a very hard rush defense a lot of pressure was put on the backline.
Queen’s was again able to apply enough pressure in rucks to force the Badgers to make another mistake deep in their own end. Bryn Davies was quick to capitalize on the mistake, taking the boys from Queen’s again into the lead 6-3. The Queen’s forwards showed the gap in skill between them and their opponents. After consistent rucking and with a lineout driven 30 meters into the end zone that resulted in a 5 meter scrum for Queen’s 8-Man, Haddon Murray picked the ball from the base of the scrum and went left. Surprising the Brock flankers and scrum half, he rumbled across the line for the only try of the game. After the conversion missed off the post, QRFC found themselves up 11-3 as the halftime whistle blew.
Brock came out after half with all pistons firing, and was able to muster another penalty kick, bringing the score to 11-6 for Queen’s. The second half emphasized defense for both teams, with two Brock players sent off with injuries sustained after crushing tackles from the Queen’s backline. Despite a handful of penalty attempts, the usually flawless Bryn Davies was unable to slot another 3-pointer, likely because of the poor weather conditions. When the final whistle blew the boys from Queen’s raised their fists in the air, it was clear that they had avenged their heartbreaking loss at the end of last season.
Final score: Queens - 11, Brock – 6.
