Queen’s Golden Gaels Men's and Woman’s Golf Program 2007
The Golden Gael’s Golf season starts as soon as students arrive to register for classes during the first week of September and is completed by the end of the third week of October. Yes it is short season and therefor all students interested have to be ready with their best game when they arrive.
We ask men student golfers who have attained a 6.0 handicap woman who have attained a 15 handicap in their golf game and who are ready to commit for a six week period, to pick up the Application/Questionnaire at the Queen’s Athletic office as soon as they arrive at Queen's. Fill in the forms and bring them to a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening Sep. 4th., 2007 at 7:30 pm in Room 226 in the Athletic Building.
Queen’s Athletics has a working agreement with the Amherstview and Loyalist Golf
Clubs west of the city where the coach is a Teaching CPGA Professional .
Applicants get to practice play for $34.00 a round at Loyalist
which includes unlimited range. At Amherstview the Green Fee is $25.00 and the
large bucket of balls for the range is $5.00. If playing a practice round you must
book it in advance and your name must be on the list that I provide to the clubs
. (Loyalist is 613-352-1199 Ext. 3, Amhersview is 613-389-5222.) If you make the
team you are allowed to practice at the Cataraqui Golf Club practice facility. Due
to a change in funding there will be a $75.00 fee for applicants who decide to try
out for the golf teams.
A two day 36 hole qualifying tournament will be played on Thu. Sep.6th., at Loyalist Golf Club in Bath, and Fri. Sep. 7th., at the Amherstview Golf Club. Following the first round there will be a cut to half the field plus players who have been on the Queen’s team in the past. Yes, this is during “frosh” week. The ten low scores for men will go on to participate in our own invitational. The top five will be the team and the next best three will be alternates. The woman are in the recreational category. Four woman and two alternates will be selected for the woman's team to compete in Invitational tournaments only.
Following the tournament the schedule of play will start and run for 5 weeks. During this time the team will play in 5 or 6 one day invitational tournaments, including our own, where all or most of the 12 OUA schools will compete. Following this there will be a 2 day OUA championship tournament, usually during the third week of October, in which all schools will compete.

In his seven years of coaching the Queen's varsity golf team Bert, a Class "A" CPGA Professional, has brought a renewed vigour to the team. In the months of September and October Bert's main golf program is coaching the Queen's University men's golf team. A Level 5 coach, Bert is both Teaching and Coaching CPGA Certified. When he is not coaching the university team he may be found teaching golf at the Loyalist and Amherstview Golf Clubs, and at the First Tee Driving Range in Napanee.
Bert is a familiar sight at Queen's University during the early spring as he is the Head Teaching professional for our Instructional Program Golf School. As a golf instructor during the summer time, Bert gives clinics, private and semi private lessons at three facilities. He provides written feedback to all students and is capable of providing video feedback as well. Certified in Club Fitting and making custom built Golf Clubs, Bert is the Operator/Owner of Bert's Golf Service in Napanee, Ontario.

Golf Prepares For OUA Finals At Laurier
Waterloo, Ont. (October 10, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels have their team set for next weeks OUA Finals in Ottawa after a fifth place finish at the Wilfrid Laurier Invitational Tuesday. Gaels captain Patrick Forbes Toronto, Ontario, continues to have a strong season after finishing second Tuesday with a one under par 70 a stroke back of tournament winner Laurier's Steve Tsandelis Waterloo, Ontario. Forbes in his last five tournaments has finished first twice, and second once. He will lead a five man Queen's team into the OUA Finals comprised of Chris Abbott Kingston, Ontario, Mike Hossack Mississauga, Ontario, Rich Colton Flesherton, Ontario and Darin Clark Sturgeon Falls, Ontario. Queen's and the other 11 OUA teams will tee it up at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club starting this Sunday October 14th with the championships concluding Monday October 15th.
Golf Wins McMaster Invitational
Burlington, Ont. (October 3, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels took the team and individual titles at the McMaster Invitational held at Crosswinds Golf & Country Club in Burlington, Ontario Tuesday. The Gaels outlasted the ten team field recording an overall score of 298, two strokes ahead of the two time defending OUA champion Waterloo Warriors. Queen's were led by Patrick Forbes, Toronto, Ontario and Mike Hossack, Mississauga, Ontario who finished first and second. Forbes won the event shooting a two under 70 on the over 6000 yard course, two shots ahead of Hossack who finished in a four way tie at even par 72. Other Queen's team members were Chris Abbott shooting 74, Darin Clark 82 and Sean Lackey 83. The Gaels return to the links next Tuesday at the Laurier Invitational which will be their final tournament before the OUA Finals in Carleton October 14-16.
Golf Team Finishes 8th At Waterloo Invitational
Kitchener, Ont. (September 29, 2007) - On Friday Sept. 28/07 the Golf Team participated in the Waterloo Invitational Tournament played at the Elmira Golf Club. Nine University teams played in windy and cool conditions. The queen's players did not adjust to the conditions well finishing a disappointing 8th. Only Captain Patrick Forbes who shot a respectable 75 and second year player Mike Hossack who fired a 78 were able to break eighty. Rich Colton, Chris Abbott and Patrick Godfrey were unable to break 80. Queen's total score was 317 a far cry from the 293 they shot at their own Invitational at Loyalist on the 16th.

Low individual score was Jeff Moore of Windsor with a 68. Second was Matt Sim from Waterloo with a 69 and in third was Mark Bania of Toronto with a 71. Patrick Forbes Queen's leading player was tied for 11th.
Winning the team competition was the host club Waterloo (gold) with a 289, followed by a 298 from Windsor (silver) and a 299 by McMaster (Bronze).
Queen's next competition is in Guelph on Monday Oct. 1st., and then McMaster on Tues. Oct. 2nd.
Queen's Golf Hosts Tournament Sunday
Kingston, Ont. (September 14, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's golf team and the women's recreational club host the Queen's Invitational this Sunday at the Loyalist Country Club in Bath. The tournament will feature six teams along with the Gaels men's squad while three women's teams will join Queen's. On the men's side Queen's captain Patrick Forbes (Toronto, Ont.) leads the field coming off his seventh place finish at the Canadian University College Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick in late May. In this tournament a year ago at Amherstview Golf Course the Gaels finished tied for third with Forbes shooting a 73. For the women Sue Gleeson will lead a Western Ontario Mustang team that is always among the best in Canada, placing third in May at the Canadian University College Championship. Gleeson finished tied for eighth in Fredericton. The tournament tees off starting at 10:30am Sunday September 16th at Loyalist Country Club in Bath.
Queen's Golfer Finishes In Top 10 At University/College Championships
Fredericton, NB (June 1, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's golf team may have failed to make the cut for the final round of the Canadian University/College Championships but their captain did not. Patrick Forbes (Toronto, ON) finished the third round Thursday in a tie for 11th and as a result was able to play in the final round at Kingswood Park. Forbes finished his final round with a 69, the second best score of the final round, to finish at 4 under par 284. In his final round performance Patrick recorded four birdies and one bogey on the 7051 yard layout in Fredericton, New Brunswick. After three pars to open his day, he bogeyed the par 3 fourth hole which was the third toughest hole in the tournament. Forbes bounced back with a par, then his first birdie of the day on the 527 yard par 5 sixth hole. Following two more pars, he birdied the fifth toughest hole of the week to complete his front nine with a one under 35. On the back nine, Forbes birdied the par 4 441 12th hole and the 523 yard par 5 16th hole to complete his second straight 69 of the tournament. Overall the OUA second team all star finishes the tournament tied for seventh with Sean Gibson from the University of Toronto and Victor Ciesielski of the University of Waterloo. Queen's as a team missed the cut by five strokes finishing with a three round total of 895 (+31). The story of the tournament came Thursday in round three as Jud Whiteside of the University of Waterloo shot a course record 64.
Queen's Golf Moves Up A Spot At National Finals
Fredericton, NB (May 31, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's golf team moved from 11th into a tie for tenth after round two of the Canadian University/College Championship being played at Kingswood Park. The Gaels were five strokes better on the par 72 course in the second round as three players improved their first round scores. Leading the way for Queen's was Patrick Forbes (Toronto, ON) who shot a one under 71 to make one of the biggest jumps of the day moving from a tie for 36th to a tie for 20th with a two day total of 146 (+2). The top Gael from day one David Trousdale (Kingston, ON) fell to a tie for 29th after a second round 75 leaving him at a four over par total heading in Thursday's action. The most improvement on the second day of action came from Queen's Richard Colton (Flesherton, ON) who after shooting a disappointing 86 on day one bounced back with a 75 to move to 91st. Overall the Tricolour are tied at +21 with the Ottawa Gee Gees. The University of British Columbia leads at the midway point of the tournament with an -11 565. Individually Louis-Pierre Godin of Laval University moved into first with a 67 to give him a 137 (-7) and a one stroke lead on UBC's Cory Renfrew who shot a course record tying 65 on Wednesday. First round leader Victor Ciesielski of the University of Waterloo fell to a tie for fourth after shooting an even par 72. The tournament concludes Friday June 1st at the Fredericton, New Brunswick golf course.
Queen's Golf Middle Of The Pack After Round 1
Fredericton, NB (May 30, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels golf team is off to a slow start after the opening round of the Canadian University/College Championships at Kingswood Park in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Gaels currently sit in eleventh at 13 over par after shooting a team total of 301 in the first round. Humber College from Toronto leads the men's field at 286 (-2) with UBC second at 288 (even) and Laval in third at 290 (+2) with Waterloo's Victor Ciesielski leading individually after his 3 under par 69. Ciesielski is a stroke ahead of Humber's Lee French, Victoria's Mitchell Evanecz, UBC's Andrew Robb and Laval's Louis-Pierre Godin. Queen's was led in day one by David Trousdale (Kingston, ON) who is tied for 16th with nine other golfers at 1 over par 73. Gaels Chris Abbott (Kingston, ON) and Patrick Forbes (Toronto, ON) are tied for 36th at 3 over, Mike Hossack (Mississauga, ON) 6 over and Richard Colton (Flesherton, ON) at 14 over. The four round competition concludes Friday.
Golf Team Goes East For RCGA University/College Championships
Kingston, ON (May 25, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels golf team will leave Saturday for Fredericton, New Brunswick to compete in the RCGA University/College Championships. The four round tournament will be held at the Kingswood Golf course from Tuesday May 28th to Friday June 1st. 18 teams from Canada will compete in the annual event with Queen's being represented by OUA second team all stars, Patrick Forbes (Toronto, ON), Rich Colton (Shelburne, ON) and Mike Hossack (Mississauga, ON). The rest of the Tricolour squad is made up by a pair of Kingston natives, Chris Abbott and David Trousdale. The Gaels will play practice rounds Sunday and Monday prior to teeing off in round one Tuesday.
Men's OUA Golf Championship
St. Catharines, Ont (October 16-17, 2006) - The men's golf team placed sixth overall with a score of 314 out of 12 teams competing for the 2006 OUA title. Waterloo won the men's title with a low score of 294. The results were based on one day of play only, as the second day was rained out. Patrick Forbes made it into the Top Ten with a 75 +3. Named as second team OUA All-Stars were Ryan Colton, Mike Hossak and Patrick Forbes.
Queen's Golf Takes Bronze at McMaster Invitational
Kingston, Ont. (October 11th, 2006) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's golf team came out of Hamilton with the bronze medal at the McMaster Invitational. The Gaels finished with a team score of 301, a stroke back of Laurier and eleven behind the winning Waterloo Warrior squad. The tournament was played at the par 72 Crosswinds Golf and Country Club north of Burlington and Queen's Sean Dainty shot a two under par 70 good enough for second in the thirty five player field. Only Waterloo star Vic Ceilsielski shot better than Dainty firing a course record 68. Ceilsielski came to fame in early September when he made the cut at the Canadian Open in Hamilton. Other individual results for Queen's were Patrick Forbes with a 73 (5th), Mike Hossack with a 75 (8th) and Chris Abbott shooting an 83. The Gaels next action is next Monday and Tuesday at the OUA championships at the St. Catherine's Golf Club.
Queen's Wins Silver Medal at Guelph Invitational Golf Tournament
Guelph, On (October 2, 2006) - The Queen's Golf team finished second in a field of 8 teams at the Guelph Invitational Golf tournament which was played at the Victoria Park East Golf Course on Monday.
The top three teams scored as follows:
1. Waterloo - 286 - Gold
2. Queen's - 295 - Silver
3. Guelph - 296 - Bronze
Individual scores of Queen's team players were:

Mike Hossack - 72
Patrick Forbes - 74
Chris Abbott - 77
Brent Brandham - (77) not counting
Total score 4 out of: 295
Rich Colton and Mike Hossack also won individual Silver medals for tying for second place in the individual score. Placing second in a field of 40 is to be complimented.
The team score of 295 was the lowest achieved by a Queen's team in the last three years. The Gaels are looking good as they prepare for the OUA's later this month.

Men's Golf Finishes Third at Waterloo Invitational (league)
Elmira, On (October 1, 2006) - Queen's received a bronze medal at the event, played at The Elmira Golf Club on Friday Sep. 29th, 2006. The host Warriors won the ten team event by seven strokes over Humber College and 18 strokes over the Gaels. Individually for Queen's Chris Abbott shot a 71 to finish tied for fourth out of fifty golfers.
Carleton University Invitational golf tournament
Belleville, ONT (Sept 24, 2006)The Queen's Golden Gaels golf team participated in the Carleton University Invitational golf tournament yesterday. It was played at the Black bear Ridge Golf club near Belleville.
Only three men's teams participated in the event. The results are as follows:

Men's Golf - Third place finish for the Gaels
Amherstview, ONT (Sept 24, 2006) - The men's golf team placed third overall out of seven university teams at the Queen's Invitational Tournament played at the Amherstview Golf Club on Sunday. It was a well played tournament despite very windy and sometimes stormy conditions. Waterloo placed first overall with a score of 295 followed by St.Lawrence (305), Ottawa and Queen's (306), Toronto (307), Guelph (319), and rounded off by Carleton and Gaels second team tied at 320. Top Queen's Players on the two teams were Patrick Forbes and Chris Abbott both at 73 and Mike Hossack at 74. The team is off to play on the Carleton Invitational at Black bear Ridge in Belleville today.

Queen's Golf Finishes 5th at Waterloo Invitational
Kingston, Ont (September 22, 2006) - Without their number one player the Queen's Golden Gaels men's golf team had a successful trip to the Waterloo Invitational Thursday September 21st. The Gaels finished 5th in the 10 team field with an overall score of 31, seven strokes back of the winners, at the Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo. Queen's top player Patrick Forbes did not play in the tournament, Sean Dainty and Rich Cotton led the way shooting 74s. Gilbert Schiller shot an 80, with Brent Brandham shooting 83. The Gaels are in action tomorrow at the Queen's Invitational at the Amherstview Golf Club with tee times starting at 11:45am.
Canadian Golf Amateur Star Playing In Kingston
Kingston, Ont (Sept 20, 2006) – One of the stars of the recent Canadian Open golf tournament in Hamilton will be participating in the Queen's/St. Lawrence Invitational this Sunday. Victor Ciesielski who participated in the annual PGA event as an amateur made the cut and was sitting tied for 31st going into the final round after shooting a 69 on the Hamilton Golf and Country Club course. Ciesielski, who will play in the Queen's/St. Lawrence Invitational at the Amherstview Golf Club with the rest of his Waterloo University team, finished the pro tournament in 72nd, 18 shots back of winner Jim Furyk. At 12:30 pm this Sunday Ciesielski will tee off in a group that will include Queen's OUA All Star Patrick Forbes, who this summer qualified for the U.S. Amateur Tournament at Hazeltine in Minnesota and finished fourth in the Toronto Star Men's Amateur this summer. Also in this group will be St. Lawrence's Chris McDonald who finished 3rd in the O.C.A.A. Tournament last year. The Gaels will enter Sunday also trying to hold on to the Bert Kea Cup given to the winner between Queen's and St. Lawrence. Queen's leads the Vikings by 5 shots entering this weekend's action after beating their cross town rivals 324-329 a week ago in Gananoque. The University of Toronto, Guelph University and Carleton University will also be competing with action getting underway at the Amherstview Golf Club at 11:45am Sunday September 24.
"Bert Kea Cup"
The first round of 18 holes between St. Lawrence College and Queen's University golf teams for the "Bert Kea Cup" was played at the Greene Acre Golf Course in Gananoque.

Queen's are the present holders of the "Bert Kea Cup" and are trying to hold on to it for this year.
Congratulations to Brent Brandham the third year Commerce student and first year golf team player who shot the low round of the day at Greene Acres. A 75 on a long difficult golf course is commendable.
Queen's golf team's next action will be Thursday Sept. 21st, at the Wilfrid Laurier Invitational at the Grey Silo Golf Course in Kitchener.

Gaels Golf Player Patrick Forbes Doing Well on the Amateur Circuit
KINGSTON, ON (August 10th, 2006) - Patrick Forbes from Toronto, Ontario was the Gaels top golfer last season. This summer he has taken time off to work on his golf game and to compete in amateur events. During the week of July 25th to 28th Patrick competed in the Toronto Star Amateur Tournament. This tournament is rated as the second largest amateur tournament in the province. In the first round Patrick shot a 68 at the Cedar Brae Golf Course, Markham, Ontario and was tied with the eventual winner David Markle. After three rounds Patrick ended in sixth place with scores of 68, 76 and 75 for a 219 total. A remarkable showing for a 19 year old.
On July 31st Patrick played in the U.S. Amateur qualifying tournament at The Links at Ivy Ridge in Buffalo New York. In two rounds Patrick shot a 6 under par 138 to qualify for the US Amateur Championship, which will be played at the Hazeltine National Golf Course at Chaska, Minnesota August 18th to 27th, 2006.
Patrick is working hard on his game at Bayview Golf Club in Toronto, his home course, to prepare for this high profile event.
