(April 30, 2008) – Queen’s University running back Mike Giffin of Kingston, Ont. was selected 17th overall by the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the Canadian Football League’s College Draft on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s exciting to be drafted and definitely an honour that not a lot of people get to experience,” said Giffin. “Right now I can’t wait to get to training camp to show Hamilton my skills. My goal is to make the team and have a long career.” “I owe a lot of credit to my teammates,” continued Giffin. “We had a really good group this year and a lot of the personal numbers I achieved were because of the guys. They deserve to share some of the credit in helping reach one of my goals.” Giffin, who is completing his degree in Geography, broke several school records becoming the first player in Queen’s rich football history to rush for over 1,000-yards in single season while ranking as the nation’s third leading rusher with 1,157-yards in 2007. QUEEN’S FOOTBALL TEAMS UP WITH GOLF 4 ALS CHARITABLE PROGRAM Kingston, Ont. (April 23, 2008) – Queen’s University Golden Gaels Football have teamed up with the ALS Society of Ontario in its newly created charitable initiative entitled ‘Golf 4 ALS’ associated with the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA). As a major new fundraising initiative for the ALS Society, the goal of ‘Golf 4 ALS’ is to help raise essential funds which help to provide the necessary equipment and support services to those living with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and to help create awareness for the terminal illness. Queen’s involvement includes members of the football team along with its coaching staff selling RCGA Golf Cards with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the ALS Society of Ontario. “It is a devastating disease and we felt compelled to offer our support to the program,” said Warren Goldie, Offensive Coordinator for the Queen’s Football team. “Several of our friends of football have been touched by this disease and when faced with an opportunity to help – our team wanted to respond.” “At Queen’s we promote responsibility and leadership within the communities that we live, work and play,” said Queen’s Football Head Coach Pat Sheahan. “Our students-athletes continue to give on and off the field and this is just one more example of how they rally behind a cause to help.” On Monday, the RCGA and ALS Society of Ontario launched the program provincially with Damon Allen, Jude St. John and Bryan Crawford of the Toronto Argonauts having signed on with the ALS Society of Ontario as official ‘Golf 4 ALS’ spokespersons. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressing and fatal neuromuscular disease that causes degeneration of the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. More than 80 per cent of those diagnosed with ALS die within two to five years of symptom onset. Every day, two to three Canadians are diagnosed with ALS, and every day, two to three Canadians die from the disease. There is no cure or effective treatment and the cause is unknown. “We are fighting an incurable disease that devastates families physically, emotionally and financially,” said Maureen Sheahan, president & CEO of the ALS Society of Ontario. “We are very excited about this new partnership with the RCGA. We hope to raise significant new dollars to support families with ALS from across the province. Damon, Jude and Bryan are true champions on and off the field and it’s great to have them helping to build awareness for the program and the disease.” By the start of the golf season, there will be more than 150 participating golf courses in Ontario and Western Canada. The Queen’s Football initiative is already off to a great start with the support of corporate partners including the Canadian Benefits, Scott Environmental Services, TyRoute Telus and Mortgage Intelligence. More corporate partners are expected in the coming days. RCGA Golf Cards are available through the Golf 4 ALS program by visiting www.rcga.org/ALS and using promotional code 08ALSQueens01 or by calling the ALS Society of Ontario toll-free at 1-866-611-8545.

Queen's Golden Gaels Football Player Signs Professional Contract with Grey Cup Champions
Regina (January 23, 2008) - The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced earlier today that Queen's University Golden Gaels slotback Robb Bagg of Kingston, Ont., has signed a professional contract with them for the 2008 season. The Roughriders are the current Canadian Football League defending Grey Cup Champions. Last June the 22-year old Bagg was invited to the Roughriders training camp as an undrafted free agent. He immediately impressed the coaching staff and earned a position on the team's roster. Instead of joining Saskatchewan, Bagg made the decision to return to Queen's for his fifth year of eligibility as a Golden Gael. "Rob was, without a doubt, the biggest surprise in our 2007 training camp," stated Rider GM Eric Tillman. "He's a young man we liked, but didn't draft after selecting a receiver (David McKoy) as our first pick. Obviously, we were stunned when Rob wasn't drafted, and quickly signed him as a free agent. That said, we never expected him to come in and earn an active roster spot during training camp. Of course, we also never expected him to decline that offer to return to Queen's. Rob has certainly taken an unconventional route to where we are now, but, trust me; we are thrilled to have him back in green and white." In 2007, Bag led the Gaels in receiving with 804 yards and six touchdowns as Queen's finished with their best record since 2003 (6-2). He ranked second in the conference with 36 catches and also played a major part of Queen's special teams returning 13 punts for 192-yards along with six kick returns for a total of 160-yards. His biggest game came against the Toronto Varsity Blues where he set a career mark amassing 341- receiving yards with three touchdowns in a 54-24 Gaels win. His total receiving yards for that day ranks as the second most in CIS history behind former Gaels James MacLean (377 vs. Guelph, 2001). "Rob was a solid contribute to the Queen's Golden Gaels football club and I have no doubt in my mind he is going to go on and have a fine CFL career," said Gaels Head Coach Pat Sheahan. "While he is a tremendous athlete and competitor, his work ethic should also be admired. He was a role model for our entire team and we wish him well in his future endeavours." Bagg recently completed his degree in Geography at Queen's University and is a former graduate of Frontenac Secondary School in his native Kingston. Former Gael Crawford Signs Extension with Argos
In just his third CFL season Crawford was recognized by his Argo teammates as a special teams co-captain for his hard work and intelligent play. He has developed into one of the preeminent special teams players in the league as evidenced by his team-leading 27 tackles - good enough for second in the CFL. In 2007 Crawford was one of just four players on the Argos' offence to play every game. "I'm excited to continue as an Argonaut for the next few years," said Crawford. "The Argonauts are a fantastic organization to play for and I truly appreciate the opportunities that the coaching staff has given me. It has been an honour to be part of such an outstanding special teams unit and I look forward to working with my teammates in our quest to bring a championship back to Toronto in the very near future." Crawford played four seasons in a Gaels uniform and his final year was the 2004-05 campaign. He graduated in the spring of 2005 with a degree in Political Science and shortly thereafter was drafted by the Argos. He holds the Gaels' season record for most punt return yards gained in a season (448 in 2002) and ranks second in most kickoff return yards in a season with 999. In his time with the Gaels he amassed 3,599 all-purpose yards which ranks him third all-time in a Gaels uniform. In addition to his outstanding football career, he was a notable Track athlete representing Queen's University nationally in all four years on the varsity track team. Three other Canadian 'homegrown' athletes signed extensions with the Argos today including WR Andre Talbot, LB Ray Fontaine and SB Chad Rempel. Logan had a successful career for the Tri-colour and proved to be one of Queen's best pass receivers during his time with the Gaels from 1948-1950. He earned the Alfie Pierce Award given to the top varsity rookie in the 1948 season while earning league all-star honours in 1949 and 1950. In his final season with the Gaels he learned to kick field goals which helped aid his professional career with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League. He won a Grey Cup with the Tiger Cats in 1953 kicking two converts and catching two passes for 27 yards as Hamilton beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 12-6 in front of almost 18 thousand people at Varsity Stadium. In his time with Hamilton from 1951-54 he kicked 152 converts which places him in fourth in Tiger Cat history. During a game in 1954 against Ottawa he kicked converts on seven touchdowns which rank as the third best in Tiger Cat history. Queen's recognized Logan as one its all-time greats inducting him into the Queen's Football Hall of Fame in 1987. Visitation for Tip Logan will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, Burlington. The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John United Church, 195 East 38th St., Hamilton. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of choice. I owe a lot of the credit to my teammates. We had a great bunch of guys and they ultimately helped me attain some of my goals." Three other Gaels, slotback Rob Bagg of Kingston, offensive lineman Cody Kennedy of Glenelg, N.S., and defensive lineman Osie Ukwuoma of Mississauga, Ont., were named to the All-Canadian second team. Bagg led the Gaels in receiving and was fifth in the country with 804-yards and compiled six touchdowns. His season was highlighted by a 341-yard, three touchdown performance against the University of Toronto on the final day of the regular season. That performance puts him second on the CIS list for receiving yards in a single game behind Queen's alumni James MacLean who recorded 377 against Guelph in 2001. Kennedy was the senior member of the offensive line which helped rejuvenate the Gaels running attack and saw the team amass over 1,000 yards rushing as well as 3,590 in total yards ranking the Gaels offense fifth in Canada. He ends a CIS career having started every game for the past four seasons and was in uniform for 39 regular season and five post season games. The only Gael from the defensive unit to be named an All-Canadian was Ukwuoma, who finished third on the team in solo tackles with 27 and finished with a team high four sacks. He was integral part of a defence that ranked fifth best in the country and conceded only 2,311 yards. The CIS also handed out its major football awards on Wednesday which included Saint Mary's quarterback Erick Glavic of Pickering, Ont. picking up the prestigious Hec Crighton Trophy as the CIS' outstanding player award. Other award winners announced were Regina linebacker Mat Nesbitt (Regina), who captured the Presidents' Trophy as the nation's best defensive player, Wilfrid Laurier offensive tackle Scott Evans (Cambridge, Ont.), presented with the J.P. Metras Trophy as outstanding down lineman, Concordia quarterback Liam Mahoney (Lachine, Que.), who claimed the Peter Gorman Trophy as rookie of the year, and Sherbrooke corner Clovis Langlois-Boucher (Sherbrooke, Que.), who received the Russ Jackson Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Tomorrow morning the CIS will announce the recipient of the Frank Tindall Award given to the CIS Coach of the Year. Queen's head coach Pat Sheahan is among the nominees for the award which is named after the legendary Frank Tindall who was a Queen's football and basketball coach. Other nominees for that award include Leroy Blugh of Bishop's, Frank McCrystal of Regina and Steve Sumarah of St. Mary's. Earlier this month Sheahan was named OUA Football Coach of the Year. The award announcements were part of the 2007 Desjardins Vanier Cup festivities taking place all week in Toronto. Hamilton, Ont. (November 8, 2007) - Queen's University Head Football Coach Pat Sheahan was named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Coach of the Year as announced earlier today by the OUA at a media conference in Hamilton. Sheahan helped guide the Gaels to a 6-2 regular season record including a third place finish and Queen's first home playoff game since 2003. This is the second time Sheahan has earned OUA Coach of the Year honours and his fourth time receiving Coach of the Year honours in leagues he has coached in. He earned the nod as the league's top coach in 2001 with the Gaels and previously in the now defunct Ontario-Quebec Intercollegiate Football Conference (OQIFC) in 1990 and 1998 with the Concordia Stingers. "ItÕs an honour to be recognized and I am pleased to accept this award on behalf of Queen's University, the players as well as the coaching staff," said Sheahan. "Individual awards in football are usually based on the collective efforts of many people; I feel this award is no different." "Our coaching staff did a great job at elevating our team's level of play in 2007 and we had a very dedicated group of players who left everything out on the field." Sheahan was also at the helm for the school's first 1,000-yard rusher when Mike Giffin of Kingston, Ont. amassed 1,157 yards this season. The 1,000 yard mark is something that both Giffin and Sheahan attribute to team play. "Everyone has played a part (in Giffin's record); from the offensive line, receivers and let's not forget about the defence who have given us many opportunities time and time again," said Sheahan following the game the record was broken. "I believe this is a tremendous team statistic." Earlier this week the Queen's Golden Gaels also placed a conference leading 12 players on the OUA first and second team all-star teams with six on each unit. Sheahan will be the OUA's representative for the CIS Coach of the Year award named after legendary Queen's coach Frank Tindal. The Frank Tindall Trophy will be named the Thursday prior to the Vanier Cup on November 22. The Vanier Cup will take place on November 23 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. QUEEN’S FOOTBALL SEASON ENDS WITH 27-19 LOSS TO WESTERN - Jimmy Allin returns missed field goal by Western for 115-yard touchdown - Kingston, Ont. (QUEEN’S) – The Queen’s Golden Gaels football season came to an abrupt end on Saturday as they lost 27-19 to the Western Mustangs during the opening round of the OUA Playoffs. Randy McAuely (London, Ont.) ran for two touchdowns and 161 yards while Mustangs quarterback Michael Faulds of Eden Mills, Ont. passed for 253 yards and threw for one touchdown leading Western over the Gaels and to the next round of the playoffs against the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees next week. Time of possession was the biggest factor in the game with the Mustangs holding the ball for almost 36 minutes while Queen’s handled the ball for just 24. The third quarter was the turning point as Western held the ball well over 12 minutes and ran a daunting 26 offensive plays. “We controlled the ball in the third quarter, that was the huge for us today,” said Western head coach Greg Marshall. “We thought the battle was going to be won on the offensive line and I think we accomplished that. The play of those lineman was the difference in my mind.” For the Gaels, running back Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) was held to just 49 yards and a single touchdown. Prior to the game, Giffin – the country’s second best rusher, had amassed 1,157-yards in 2007 and had collected 10 consecutive games over 100-yards rushing. “Giffin is an outstanding back. I watched a lot of film this week and he can play,” said Marshall. “Our defensive line just didn’t let him get going. That was a challenging task for them this week and holding him back was key to our win.” Gaels Quarterback Dan Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. finished the day with 285-yards passing on 16 completions and 32 attempts. “They were the better team today. No excuses, the beat us,” said Gaels Head Coach Pat Sheahan. “I think we were two evenly matched teams, but today we couldn’t make the best of our opportunities. The Gaels were facing a much different team then they saw in the opening week when they won 26-20 in overtime against Western in London. While the Gaels cruised to a 6-2 record, Western struggled out of the gate going 0-4 and then rattled off four impressive victories including a dominating effort against Waterloo last week to earn a playoff berth. Today Western opened the scoring in the first quarter on two field goals by Derek Schiavone (Port Colburn, Ont.) making the score 6-0 in favour of the Mustangs. It looked as if Western would add another field goal but Schiavone missed the uprights left setting up an improbable 115-yard return by defensive back and return specialist Jimmy Allin (Corbyville, Ont.) which put the Gaels up 7-6 at the end of the first. Although stats are not kept in the CIS for returns on missed field goals, Allin’s return ranks as the second longest punt return in playoff history. The other return came in 1975 when John Kelly from the Guelph Gryphons returned a punt 130-yard’s against Laurier. His return if counted as a punt-return would rank as the 12th best all time in CIS history. In the second, McAuley and Giffin traded 1-yard TD run scores while Western conceded a safety to make the score 16-13 for Queen’s at the half. The third quarter saw McAuley rush for a 3-yard touchdown and Faulds throw an 8-yard pass to tight-end Brad Barkauskas of London, Ont. Gaels kicker Dan Village of Vancouver closed the scoring with a field goal in the fourth. “I know the guys are disappointed right now and it’s a disappointing end; it’s tough to swallow,” said Sheahan. “However, tomorrow I think they will wake up and realize they had a good season and lots to be proud of. This is a fine bunch of individuals who represented Queen’s well.” Sheahan also added, “It’s going to be hard to see a lot of good athletes move on and that’s an unsettling thing about College sports. You have an intense relationship with so many good athletes and then they move on in a short period of time.” NOTES: Senior Rob Bagg (Kingston) said following the game he will now turn his focus on trying to make the CFL Saskatchewan Roughriders for the 2008 season. Bagg earned a position on the Roughriders squad in June but chose to return to Queen’s for his fifth and final year of eligibility... Doug Jefferies, long-time public address announcer at Golden Gaels football games revealed prior to the game he would be retiring from duties after the completion of this season. Jefferies has been the stadium announcer with the Golden Gaels for 27 seasons. FOOTBALL HOSTS WESTERN IN OUA QUARTERFINALS QUEEN’S BLASTS VARSITY BLUES 54-24 IN FOOTBALL Toronto (October 20, 2007) – The No. 9 ranked Queen’s Golden Gaels gained over 700-yards in offence to blast the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 54-24 finishing the regular season on Saturday in Toronto. Kingston natives Rob Bagg and Mike Giffin each had three touchdowns as the Gaels concluded their regular season campaign 6-2 good enough for the third seed heading into next week’s OUA playoffs. Bagg caught nine passes for a total of 341-yards while Giffin earned 130-yards on the ground and another 70 in the air. Gaels Quarterback Dan Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. had his best offensive showing of the season lighting up the scoreboard for four touchdown scores with 14 completions, 22 attempts and 440-yards passing. Bagg, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior, who won a spot on the CFL’s Saskatchewan Rough Riders last June but opted to stay with the Gaels, now ranks second on the CIS list for receiving yards in a single game behind Queen’s alumni James MacLean. (377 vs. Guelph, 2001). Giffin, last week’s OUA Athlete of the Week, is the only running back in Gaels history to run for 100-yards in eight consecutive league games. He has now amassed 10 consecutive 100-yard plus rushing games dating back to last season. He also finishes the regular season with a total of 1,157-yards, the most in team history. Third year running back Marty Gordon of Kingston also scored his first touchdown of the season to finish the Gaels scoring outburst early in the fourth quarter. Toronto did manage to put 24 points against the Gaels defence with 17 coming when the game’s outcome had been well decided and Queen’s resting many of their starters. Kris Newman (Scarborough, Ont.) was the leading back for the Blues earning 22 carries for 126-yards and a single touchdown. The Blues also got touchdowns from Andrew Gillis (Markham, Ont.), and Quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.). Hamilton threw 10 completions for 160-yards in the air. On the defensive side of the ball Jimmy Allin of Corbyville, Ont. tied a team record for most career pass break-ups recording one in today’s game. Allin, a third year defensive back is tied with Kirby Calvert who played for the Gaels until 2005 with 17. Overall the Gaels defence surrendered 375-yards offence recovering two of Toronto’s five fumbles and sacking Hamilton once. Next week the Gaels will face off against the University of Western Ontario in a quarter-final home playoff game on October 27 at Richardson Stadium beginning at 1:00pm. The Gaels started the season on the road against Western and dealt them a 26-20 over-time loss in week one. The Mustangs continued to struggle losing the next three before rebounding with four convincing win’s including today’s 37-3 romp over the Waterloo Warriors. Tickets for the game are already on sale and can be purchased at the Physical Education Centre on campus at Queen’s University or by calling (613) 533-2500. NOTES: Game attendance was 2,255... The loss handed the Blue’s its 49th consecutive loss dating back to the 2001 season and adds to their dubious mark of longest losing streak in CIS Football history... Last week they broke the old mark held by York University losing to University of Western Ontario... The Blues' losing streak pales in comparison to the NCAA record for consecutive defeats, which is 80 set by Prairie View A&M (1989-'98). Queen’s completes regular season at old four rival Kingston, Ont. (October 18, 2007) – The No. 9 ranked Queen’s Golden Gaels will take on the Varsity Blues in Toronto on Saturday afternoon knowing they have already clinched third place in the OUA and a home playoff game.
Queen's Dominates Waterloo 45-0 In Homecomring Game Kingston, Ont. (October 13, 2007) – The Queen’s Golden Gaels left nothing to chance dominating the Waterloo Warriors in a lopsided 45-0 victory in front of 10,452 fans at Richardson Stadium during homecoming weekend at Queen’s University. Gaels running back Mike Giffin of Kingston, Ont., broke a slew of team records en route to rushing for 193-yards on the ground and scoring three touchdowns in the one-sided affair. Queen’s defence was stifling as Waterloo was held to just 54 total-yards and seven first downs while Queen’s amassed a season high 536 total-yards on the offensive side of the ball. Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., threw for 303-yards and completed 19 passes on 31 attempts, converting four for touchdown and one interception. Giffin was Brannagan’s top receiver completing four catches at 68-yards with a single touchdown in the air. Scott Valberg (Kingston) made 3 receptions converting two for touchdowns while Rob Bagg (Kingston), who returned from a rib injury this week, also earned a touchdown reception. “The score indicates we played well, but we really need to credit the defence,” said Giffin postgame. “I think they [Waterloo] only had a handful of first downs all day. That makes a big difference on the offense.” With his 193-yards Giffin now holds the Gaels single season mark of most 100-yard games with seven, topping the previous mark of six held by Larry Mohr (1983) and Brad Elberg (1992). Giffin has now rushed for nine consecutive 100-plus-yard games dating back to last season. Giffin also becomes the single season rushing leader in Gaels history breaking the mark of 937-yards set by Elberg in the 1992 season. He becomes the only Gael in its 125 year history to have collected over 1,000-yards rushing in a single season and with one game left to play in the regular season sits at 1,029-yards. “I’m speechless right now,” said Giffin referring to his record breaking performance. “I just want to thank my offensive line obviously. I know its a little cliché to say but I have to. They have done a heck of a job this year. They really have come together.” Gaels Head Coach Pat Sheahan was proud of his work horse running back, but pointed out that the entire team contributed to Giffin reaching 1,000 rushing yards. “Everyone has played a part; from the offensive line, receivers and let’s not forget about the defence who have given us many opportunities time and time again. I believe it’s a tremendous team statistic and certainly a real tribute to Mike himself because he has played well this year.” “Being in my fifth year, this accomplishment means a lot to me. It means good progress,” said Offensive Lineman Cody Kennedy of Glenelgy, N.S. “When I first got here we couldn’t run the ball, so going from that to a dominating rushing team is a big accomplishment in my eyes. Giffin’s three-touchdowns put him just one behind Elberg for the most touchdowns by a Gael in a single season. Elberg had 14 in 1992. He also trails teammate Bagg for most all purpose yards in one season trailing him by just 26–yards, a mark he will surely pass next week vs. Toronto. Bagg set the current record of all purpose yards in a single season last season with 1,320. Earlier in this week’s game Giffin also earn With the win, Queen’s has clinched a quarter final home playoff date. The Gaels will take on either Western or Waterloo in the opening week of the playoffs at home. Western will visit Waterloo next weekend and the winner of that game will face the Gaels on October 27th at Richardson Stadium beginning at 1:00pm. Playoff tickets will go on sale on Monday morning at 11:00am by calling (613) 533-2500. Next week the Gaels travel to the University of Toronto to take on the winless Blues at Varsity Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm. NOTE: Giffin also set the single season carries mark and it currently stands at 168 with one game to play. He broke the mark of 149 set in 1996 by Paul Correale... Attendance for today’s classic homecoming game was 10,452... Queen's Battles But Lose Thriller To Ottawa OTTAWA (October 6, 2007) – It was a valiant effort but in the end the Queen’s Golden Gaels were dealt a heartbreaking loss to the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee Gee’s in CIS Football action on Saturday in Ottawa. The No. 9 ranked Gaels led much of the game and were up 12-7 with just 2:07 remaining when Ottawa’s Joshua Sacobie of Fredericton, N.B., hit a streaking Cyril Adjeity (Ottawa) with a 60–yard pass putting the Gee Gee’s up 13-12. On the ensuing drive, the Gaels quickly moved down the field and looked poised to score but an unfortunate fumble by Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) turned the ball over in Ottawa territory handed the Gee Gee’s their six straight victory in the 2007 campaign. “It was tough loss for us,” said Coach Pat Sheahan after the game. “We played hard and poised for 58 minutes and often when two good teams come together it is decided by just a few key plays; that certainly was the case today.” The Gaels Defence held Sacobie, the nation’s leading passer, to 252-yards in the air, far below his 311-yard per game average. Sacobie completed just 16 of 30 passes and threw one interception to Queen’s defensive back Jimmy Allin (Corbyville, Ont.). To go along with his interception, Allin had five solo tackles and broke up three additional passing plays to lead the Gaels defensively. On the offensive side, the Gaels were competitive with Giffin collecting 163-yards on the ground and marking his sixth 100-plus yard rushing of the season. Giffin, the CIS leader in touchdowns, also converted his 10th of the year on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. Quarterback Dan Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) completing 16 of 24 passes for 207 yards. Punter Dan Village of Vancouver, B.C. also got into passing game completing an 11-yard pass on a fake-punt which earned the Gaels a key-third down conversion early in the game. Although it was a tough loss to swallow, Sheahan did feel the team made progress. “We played reasonably well against a quality opponent,” said Sheahan. “I think we need to sharpen up in pressure situations and work on some other areas, but in the end we should be a tough team to play in the playoffs.” The Gaels record falls to 4-2 on the season with both losses coming against nationally ranked opponents. No. 4 ranked Laurier topped Queen’s last week. Laurier and Ottawa will meet next week in Waterloo, Ont. with both teams undefeated heading into the game. For Queen’s next week’s game marks the school’s Homecoming celebrations as the Gaels will take on the 3-3 Waterloo Warriors at Richardson Stadium beginning at 1:25 pm. Several special events are being planned to commemorate Homecoming Weekend. Tickets are available by calling (613) 533-6000 ext 74715. Gaels Attempt To Bounce Back Against Defending OUA Champs
Kingston, Ont. (October 4, 2007) - The No. 9 Queen's Golden Gaels will try and rebound from their first loss of the season when they tangle with the No. 2 ranked Ottawa Gee Gees this weekend in the nation's capital. The Gaels look to shrug off a disappointing 23-4 loss last week against the Laurier Golden Hawks and seek revenge on the GeeGees after they ended the Gaels campaign in the 2006 playoffs. The Ottawa Gee Gees, the defending Yates Cup champions, are a perfect 5-0 rolling over McMaster 60-7 last week. In that game, Ottawa ended with 600 yards offensively and led the game 38-0 at halftime. It will be strength against strength on Saturday as the Gaels and the nation's third leading rusher Mike Giffin, (Kingston , Ont.) face the second leading defence against the run in the CIS. Giffin gained 165 yards on 25 carries Saturday against Laurier to give him 671 on the campaign and his nine touchdowns lead the country. The Ottawa defence is second in the CIS conceding just 84 yards rushing a game this season. After giving up 136 yards to Guelph's Nick FitzGibbon Puslinch, Ontario in week one the Gee Gee defence has conceded a total of just 278 yards total along the ground. For the Queen's defence they come into week six having held each of their previous opponents to below their seasonal offensive averages. In Ottawa the Gaels will face the No. 2 passing offence in the country led by quarterback Joshua Sacobie Fredericton, New Brunswick, who has thrown for a CIS leading 1556 yards. He has also thrown for a Canadian high 14 touchdowns and his 64.2% completion percentage is among the nation's leaders. Saturday's game will also feature the country's top two scorers in Giffin and Ottawa's placekicker Ara Tchobanian Ottawa, Ontario . The fifth year special teams stalwart leads the CIS with 75 points, 19 more than Giffin and Tchobanian has also made 15 of 17 field goals this season. The game will kickoff at 2pm this Saturday October 6th at Frank Clair Stadium on Bank Street in Ottawa. Listen to the game on CFRC 101.9 FM for the live broadcast. Queen's Turns Over Undefeated Record to Laurier
Kingston, Ont. (September 29, 2007) - Turnovers spell defeat and that's exactly what happened to the No. 7 ranked Queen's Golden Gaels football squad losing 23-4 to the No. 4 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Saturday at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont. Laurier scored 23 unanswered en route to handing the Gaels their first loss to put the Tri-colour's record at 4-1 on the 2007 season. WLU defended their unblemished record and now sit tied with Ottawa as the remaining undefeated teams in the OUA; both Laurier and Ottawa are 5-0. The Gaels recorded four turnovers which led to the disappointing loss seeing Quarterback Danny Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) throw two interceptions and the offence fumble the ball three times with two recoveries by the Laurier defence. The Gaels offence sputtered all day with Brannagan unable to find a groove going 10 for 30 with 159 yards gained in the air. "Offensively we were a little off today," said Head Coach Pat Sheahan after the game. "We didn't get much going on the passing game. We weren't sharp on offense today and paid a price against a very good football team." "Despite a few mistakes on defence, I thought we played with them" continued Sheahan. "For them to come in and score 17-20 points, I don't think anyone would have been shocked to hear that. For us to score four points, well, that is below par." The two fumble recoveries by Laurier were a deflating momentum killer to the Gaels offense. Both fumbles came after they recorded big yardage plays. The first came early in the second quarter when running back Mike Giffin of Kingston fumbled the ball after being mauled by the Laurier secondary. That fumble led to a 70-yard Laurier touchdown drive that put the Hawks up 7-4 and spurred on an additional major in their next possession. The Hawks went into the half, up 17-4. The Gaels offensive saw another big play squandered when Brannagan threw from the Gaels own 21-yard line connecting with Devon Sheahan of Kingston. Sheahan made the catch and when tackled lost control of the ball only to fumble on the Laurier 35-yard line. On a positive side, the Gaels defence did manage solid stats against one of the country's top offenses. They held one of the nation's top Quarterback to only 200-yards in the air and one passing touchdown. They also only surrendered 129 yards on the rushing attack holding the country's leading rusher to 88-yards. Giffin was the Gaels shining light on the offensive side of the ball running for 171-yards against a tough Laurier defence. This marked his seventh straight 100-yard plus rushing game and fifth of the season. Scoring for Laurier were Quarterback Ian Noble of West Vancouver, B.C. a one-yard running play and then Noble hit Dante Luciani of Oakville, Ont. with an 8-yard pass for only the game's second touchdown. Laurier's kicker Chris Mamo of London, Ont. connected on three field goals to close the game's scoring at 23-4. The Gaels opened the scoring with 14-yard field goal by Dan Village at 5:03 of the first quarter. Laurier conceded a single point two minutes later on a Village punt to make the score 4-0 in Queen's favour. The Gaels will have little rest going up against No. 3 ranked Ottawa GeeGees next week. The Thanksgiving weekend matchup goes Saturday in Ottawa beginning at 2:00pm. For tickets call the Gee Gee ticket office at 613-562-5800 x 4337. NOTES: Saturday's game marked 125th anniversary of Queen's Golden Gaels Football... A huge contingent of alumni made up the 5,582 spectators in attendance including long-time Gael "Moose" Hal McCarney. McCarney was a former assistant coach of the legendary Frank Tindall who was the Head Coach of the Tricolour in the 60's and 70's. McCarney was the ceremonial kicker in today's game... Kingston's Rob Bagg suffered a strained rib muscle early in the second quarter and remained off the field until the end of the fourth quarter. Brannagan's top play came in the fourth quarter when he hooked up with Kingston's Rob Bagg on a 67-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach at 35-3. Not to be overshadowed, the Queen's defence held reigning Hec Creighton trophy winner, Windsor running back Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) to just 109-yards and no touchdowns. The Lancer passing game was also less non-existent giving up a just 97-yards in the air and picking off Lancer Quarterback Dan Lumley (Windsor) three times. Stephenson was able to collect enough yards on the Gaels defence to pass 4,000 career yards rushing in his career. He became the seventh player in CIS history and only the second in OUA history to break the 4,000-yard barrier. Stephenson is just 50-yards away from breaking the all-time mark which is held by former McMaster Marauder and current CFL Hamilton Tiger Cat Jesse Lumsden (4,138). Giffin Rolls as Gaels Come From Behind to Beat McMaster in Football
Kingston, Ont. (September 15, 2007) - Kingston's Mike Giffin had three touchdowns leading the No. 10 ranked Queen's Golden Gaels to a 24-20 come-from-behind victory over the No. 9 McMaster Marauders, Saturday at Richardson Stadium. Early in the fourth quarter, with the Gaels trailing McMaster 20-9, Queen's drove down the field and Giffin ended the drive on third and goal from the one-yard line to make the score 20-16. With 8:19 left in the fourth, Gaels Quarterback Dan Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., connected with Giffin on a nifty nine-yard pass to put the Gaels up for good 23-20. "This is a big confidence boost for us." said Giffin. "We started 2-0 last year and then lost four in a row. This game was a big change for us. I think we realize we're pretty good this year, so hopefully we can keep it going next week." Giffin, a fourth-year running back collected his third consecutive game with 100-plus-yards running posting a total of 115-yards on 20 carries and one rushing touchdown. He also tallied four receptions with 93 receiving yards and two touchdowns. "The passing game works much better when you got a guy in the backfield that can hurt |
