Figure Skating Finishes Fourth At McGill Invitational
Montreal (November 30, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels finished in a tie for fourth place at the McGill Fall Invitational with the host Martlets. Both schools finished with 33 points, 28 back of meet winning Brock University. The Gaels received strong results from Jenna Hall and Melanie Graveline (2nd in the Junior Silver Similar Dance), Justin O'Shaughnessy (2nd in Men's Single Freeskate) and Jessica Bouchard and Cathryn Schroeder (3rd in the Senior Similar Pairs). The Gaels will return to action in January when they compete in the Western Invitational on the 24th and 25th.
Figure Skating Looks To Defend Title In Toronto
Kingston, ON (February 14, 2007) - The Queen’s Golden Gaels will be looking for their fourth consecutive OUA Championship Friday, as they take to the ice in the two day event. The powerful Golden Gaels will begin their quest to retain the championship banner starting tomorrow Thursday February 15th, at Ryerson University in Toronto. The event will feature skaters from eight schools across the province, and all will be looking to upset the defending champions who have held the reigns in OUA figure skating for the past twelve years, winning 10 of 12 championships in that time. The Golden Gaels won three gold, four silver and two bronze at the recent Waterloo Invitational to finish just 10 points back of the Brock Badgers who won the event. Queen’s will look to Nadia Charania in the Junior Silver Free Skate, Rachel Coens and Katie Hunt in the Senior Similar Pairs and Laura Keating and Jamie Stuckless in the Senior Similar Dance. On the men’s side Justin O’Shaughnessy will be looked upon to provide leadership to his team and will compete in the men’s singles event.
Perhaps the greatest threat to the three-time defending champions is the Brock Badgers team who took home the gold medal at the Waterloo Invitational. Brock was in close competition with the favourites, heading into the final event. After an outstanding synchro program, the Badgers saw themselves walking home with the competition title. The Badgers enter the OUA Championships looking for strong performances from Sam Beaugrand and Kady McKague in the Intermediate Similar Pairs and Beth Carruth, Shannon Dickson, Kaylyn Pecaric and Amanada Sinclair in the Four’s Freeskate event.
The Waterloo Warriors have also posted some solid results this year placing third in the Waterloo Invitational late in the season. Daniela Cotesta (Sudbury, Ontario) skated a flawless program in the Gold Free Skate event at the Invitational and will look to do the same at the OUA Championship. Rookie Adrienne Corbett will try to repeat her previous performances of the year in her first championship event of her career. On the men’s side Kevin Dawe has had a couple of strong skates this year in the Open Men’s event and both will be assets to the Warriors medal hopes this week.
Figure Skating Finishes Second At Waterloo Invitational
Waterloo, ON (January 15, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels won three gold, four silver and two bronze this past weekend at the Waterloo Invitational to finish just ten points back of the Brock Badgers. Winning events for Queen's were Nadia Charania in the Junior Silver Free Skate, Rachel Coens and Katie Hunt in the Senior Similar Pairs and Laura Keating and Jamie Stuckless in the Senior Similar Dance. Queen's next competition will not be till next month when they will defend their OUA title at the University of Toronto February 15th and 16th for the OUA Championship.
Figure Skating Finishes 4th at Queen's Invitational
Kingston, Ont (November 17, 2006) - The Queen's Golden Gaels received two gold and four bronze at their own Invitational Friday at the Jock Harty Arena. The Gaels finished fourth in the team standings twenty seven points behind first place McGill, with Western Ontario and Brock rounding out the top three. Queen's Justin O'Shaughnessy won the men's singles along with Laura Keating and Jamie Stuckless who eamed up to win the Senior Silver Similar Dance for the Gaels. Bronze medals were won for the Gaels by Kimberley Hord and Katie Phillips in the Dance Variation, Cathryn Schroeder in the Short Program, Nadia Charania in Junior Silver Singles and by team captains Rachel Coens and Katie Hunt in the Senior Similar Pairs.

GAELS LOOK FOR THREE-PEAT AT OUA FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS
ST. CATHARINES – The hunt for a third consecutive Ontario University Athletics figure skating championship is on for the Queen’s Golden Gaels. The dominant Gaels begin the quest to retain the OQWCIA Trophy today as the OUA Championship begins at Brock University in St. Catharines, ON today, running until Saturday afternoon when the event caps off with the final five Synchro Team competitors taking the ice. Queen’s has been the main power in the sport over the past decade, winning the past two championships and nine of the last 11 overall. Despite their firm grip on the banners, the Gaels will be in tough as 10 other teams, including the Western Mustangs – the only school to snap the string of Queen’s victories with back-to-back titles in 2001/02 and 2002/03 – vie for the OUA crown.
Arguably the biggest threat to the two-time defending champs is the host Brock Badgers team, winners of the Ryerson Invitational held earlier this month in Toronto. Brock, which tied for third with the Mustangs at the Queen’s Invitational in November, scored a total off 77 points to take first, followed by the Gaels at 72 points and Western at 62. The Badgers showed incredible consistency throughout the two-day event and were particularly strong in the Senior Silver Similar Dance and the Senior Similar Pairs, winning both events. Beth Carruth (Fenelon Falls, ON) and Jennifer Court (Oakville, ON) finished first in the Senior Silver Similar Dance, followed by Gaels skaters Laura Keating (Calgary, AB) and Jamie Stuckless (Kanata, ON), while the Badgers duo of second-year competitors Shannon Dickson (Lindsay, ON) and Kaylyn Pecaric (Ancaster, ON) took top spot in the Senior Similar Pairs. Brock’s other first-place finish in that event came from third-year Jennifer McAllister (Orangeville, ON), who won the Junior Silver ladies, placing ahead of McGill Martlet Kate McCall (Palos Verdes, CA) and Lindsay Webb (Thamesford, ON) of the Guelph Gryphons.
Second-year Arts and Science student Nita Guron (Stephenville, NL) is one of the focal points of the experienced Gaels team. Guron skated to first-place finishes in the Senior Silver Solo Dance at both Invitationals this year and also had two back-to-back wins in the Junior Silver Similar Dance with partner Allison Rodrigues (Markham, ON).
The Waterloo Warriors posted some solid results in Toronto earlier this month, including a first-place finish in the Gold Ladies event from strong rookie Daniel Cotesta (Sudbury, ON). Cotesta finished ahead of Dickson and second-year Mustang Heather Toews (Waterloo, ON). Leo Kwong (Waterloo, ON) is one of the Warriors best medal hopes on the men’s side. The third-year Math major placed second in the Men’s Singles at both the Queen’s and Ryerson Invitationals. Kwong finished at Ryerson, while also placing second behind the Gaels’ Justin O'Shaughnessy (Belleville, ON) in Kingston last fall.
McGill has shown strength in a variety of events this season en route a fourth-place team finish at Ryerson and a solid second-place showing in the November Invitational. McCall has been a consistent threat in competitions this season as she placed second in both the Junior Silver and the Senior Silver Solo Dance events in Toronto. McCall won both the Junior Silver Singles and the Intermediate Similar Pairs, with teammate Mallory Toner (Grand Falls, MB) in Kingston. As a rookie, Toner has shown she can perform under pressure, taking top spot in the Senior Silver ladies last month. Fellow Martlet Hannah McDonald (Quesnel, BC) will also enter this weekend with high expectations after placing first in the Short Program at both Invitationals.

Coaching Report -
Queen’s University Figure Skating Invitational
KINGSTON, Ont. (25 Nov. 2005) - If the first competition of the 2005-2006 OUA figure skating season is any indication of the calibre of athletes across the eleven universities represented in the league, the rest of the season should prove to be a very exciting one. The Queen’s Golden Gaels showed good form and breadth of talent in placing first in five of the 12 events, third in three events, fourth in two events, and fifth in two events. These placings were sufficient to garner 70 points in total to capture gold in the overall standings. A strong contending team that has been building strength over the years was McGill who came in second with 57 points. Western and Brock challenged closely by tying for third place with 50 points.
Outstanding performances were turned in by Nita Guron who won the Senior Silver Solo Dance with a highly expressive Paso Doble. Together with her dance partner, Allison Rodrigues, they brought home gold in the Junior Silver Similar Dance with a flawless Keats Foxtrot. Co-captain, Rachel Coens, and Katie Hunt skated with precision, unison, and technical brilliance to outskate their rivals to win the Senior Similar Pairs. They are the two-time defending OUA champions in this event. The only male skater on the team, Justin O’Shaughnessy, placed first in Men’s Singles with an inspiring performance, given that he had just finished putting the program together a few days before the competition as he had been nursing an ankle injury. The final first place finish came in the Senior Silver Similar Dance with Laura Keating and Jamie Stuckless skating to what seemed to be an effortless, yet powerful Killian, with the last pattern being just as strong as the first.
Laura also competed in the Gold Solo Dance and came in third with a beautifully skated Viennese. Rookies, Kimberley Hord and Katie Phillips, trained very hard to turn in a very well executed Dance Variation to the rhythm of the Harris Tango and contributed to the points tally with a third place finish. They had exquisite makeup and hair to reflect the flavour of the dance. The other co-captain, Allison Millen, also came in third with a very artistic Short Program. She completed all the rotations of the required jumps but, unfortunately, fell out of two of them.
Fourth place finishes came from the performances of Andrea Buzinski in Gold Singles and Nadia Charania in Senior Silver Singles. In spite of a few mistakes, they bounced back to finish their programs strongly. Nadia skated with rookie, Caitlin McNevin, in the Intermediate Similar Pairs to come in fifth. Cailtin was also fifth amongst a very strong field of Junior Silver Singles skaters.
The tremendous hard work and dedication that went into preparing for this competition were duly rewarded with the overall victory at Queen’s. This accomplishment did not come without discipline and sacrifice. For example, due to the unavailability of sufficient dressing rooms, the team graciously and selflessly gave up their warm dressing room for two visiting teams and occupied a cold, makeshift space on the second level of the arena. They rose above this challenge and focused on the task-at-hand. The enthusiastic support and cheering of fellow teammates in the stands also buttressed those on the ice.
The team will now endeavour to build on these successes and further strengthen each program as they prepare for the Ryerson Invitational on February 4 and 5, 2006 and then, onwards to the OUA Championship, hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines, on February 24 and 25, 2006.
