Sean SmithHead Coach: Sean Smith
This will be Sean’s 3rd season working with the Queen’s Field Hockey team, and his second as a full-time Assistant coach, having originally started as a volunteer working with the team’s goalkeepers. Originally from Vancouver, Sean grew up playing Field Hockey from an early age, and has a wide range of playing experiences at both the club (Vancouver Hawks) and provincial level. Sean is currently entering his final year of undergraduate study in Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s.



Fitness and Conditioning: Rodney Wilson
Rodney is the Assistant Coordinator of the ‘Fitness & Lifestyle Centre’, part of the Queen’s School of Physical and Health Education. In addition to this role, Rodney currently works with a number of the Varsity teams developing fitness and conditioning programs for both on- and off-season use. His training views and philosophy are quite straightforward, with a real focus on tailoring for sport-specific requirements. Rodney grew-up in Northern Ireland playing soccer and field hockey; this will be his second season working with the Field Hockey team.

FIELD HOCKEY’S KIRSTEN JEWELL NAMED ALL-CANADIAN FOR QUEEN’S

TORONTO (QUEEN’S) – Queen’s University field hockey player Kirsten Jewell of Toronto earned second team All-Canadian honours as announced by the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) today in Toronto.

Jewell, a fourth-year midfielder led the Queen’s Golden Gaels in goals this season with six good enough for tenth in overall scoring among the OUA.  The 21-year old was also tied for the league lead in goals off penalty corners with five as she helped the Gaels to a 7-6-1 record.  Her biggest highlight came on September 30 in a 5-2 win over Waterloo where she scored two goals. 

Other CIS major award winners announced Wednesday night during the All-Canadian Banquet were University of Toronto’s Cailie O’Hara (Oakville, Ont.) who won the CIS’s women’s field hockey player of the year award.  Also acknowledge were Victoria’s Kaitlyn Williams of White Rock, B.C., who captured the Joyce Slipp Award as the nation’s top rookie, Alberta’s Jennifer Zwicker of Calgary, received the Gail Wilson Outstanding Contributor Award, and Western Ontario’s Brenyn Hodge, earned coach-of-the-year honours and received the Marina van der Merwe Award.

The 2007 CIS championship gets under way on Thursday at the University of Toronto’s brand new Varsity Centre. The gold-medal final is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Queen's Wins One and Loses Two Closing Regular Season

London, Ont. (October 21, 2007) – Queen’s Field Hockey team finished its regular season play over the weekend earning a victory and two losses at TD Waterhouse Field in London, Ont.     

On Saturday, Queen’s faced off against the league leading Guelph Gryphons who kept the Gaels off the scoreboard in a 4-0 Gryphon victory.  The Gaels had trouble generating offence while Guelph scored three in the first half and one in the second half.

Sunday morning, the task didn’t get any easier as the Gaels took on the University of Toronto who were tied atop the OUA standings with Guelph.    The Varsity Blues downed the Gaels 5-1 with Gillian Lester of Peterborough, Ont. earning the lone goal for the tricolour.

In the Sunday afternoon match, the Gaels posted its only win of the weekend shutting out Carleton 5-0 to close the regular season campaign.  Goal scorers for the Gaels included two goals by Emily Newton (Vancouver) and singles by Hilary Piets (Victoria, B.C.), Madeleine Gordon (Gananoque, Ont.), Kirsten Jewell (Toronto).

Queen’s finished with a 7-6-1 record with 22 points good enough for fifth place.  Western finished just one point ahead of the Gaels.  Guelph and Toronto finished tied atop the standings with 37 points while York was third with 27 points. 

With their fifth place finish, the Gaels qualify for post-season play and will compete in the OUA Championship from October 27-28 in Neapean, Ont. next week.

Field Hockey Wins Two This Weekend

Toronto, Ont. (October 15, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels clinched an OUA playoff spot as they won two of the three they played this weekend at University Stadium in Toronto. 

On Saturday Queen's blanked sixth place Waterloo 1-0 on a goal by Emily Newton of Vancouver, British Columbia in the first half.  Sunday the Gaels started the day with a narrow 3-2 loss to the York Lions.  York led 2-0 at halftime but goals by Newton off a corner and Kirsten Jewell of Toronto, Ontario also off a corner tied the game but the Lions scored the winner late. 

Later in the day Queen's blanked Western Ontario 3-0 getting first half goals from Michelle Mattiacci of Burlington, Ontario and Gillian Lester of Peterborough, Ontario and a second half marker from rookie Maddie Gordon of Gananoque, Ontario.  Goaltender Kaylee Milne recorded the shutout.  The Gaels return to action this weekend in London, Ontario at the University of Western Ontario with games Saturday October 20th against Guelph and Sunday October 21st against Toronto and Carleton.

Field Hockey Defeats McGill 2-1

Nepean, Ont. (October 6, 2007) -
The Queen's Golden Gaels slipped by the McGill Martlets 2-1 Friday afternoon at the Minton Sportsplex in Nepean.  The Gaels controlled most of the ball possession in the game but were not able to tak the lead until the second half when rookie Danielle Denley drove into the circle and shot past multiple defenders and the Martlet goaltender.  Queen's made it 2-0 moments later on a goal by Maggie Yeomans before McGill posted a goal late in the game on one of their few forays into the Tricolour zone.  The victory moves the Gaels within two points of third place York while McGill falls to 0-7 on the season.  Queen's returns to action next weekend in Toronto when they face Waterloo Saturday October 13th and Western Ontario and York Sunday October 14th. 

Field Hockey Wins 5-2 & Loses 7-2
Oakville, Ont. (September 30, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels split their OUA games on Sunday in Oakville defeating Waterloo5-2 and losing to first place Guelph 7-2. In their victory the Gaels led 2-1 at halftime courtesy of goals by Hilary Piets and Laura Robinson sandwiched around a Warriors goal. In the second half Kirsten Jewell scored two goals for Queen's with rookie Rebecca Hazell scoring the other. Against undefeated Guelph Kirsten Jewell scored the only Queen's goal in the first half which saw the Gryphons lead 4-1 by the break. In the second half the Gaels only goal was scored by Maggie Yeomans. The split leaves Queen's in fourth in the OUA with a 3-3-1 record. This week the Gaels play against winless McGill Friday October 5th at 3pm in Nepean at the Minto Sportsplex.


Successful Weekend For Field Hockey
Toronto, Ont. (September 24, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels took three out of a possible six points on the weekend in OUA action held in Toronto. The Gaels lost their first game to the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-0 with both goals being scored in the first half. In their second game Queen's bounced back to shutout McGill 3-0 with Hilary Piets and Maggie Yeomans scoring in the first half and Kirsten Jewell tipping in a Piets penalty corner in the second half. On Sunday the Gaels in their only game of the day Queen's fell behind 2-0 to Western in the first half but tied things in the second half on goals by Hilary Piets and Danielle Denley. The Tricolour sits in fourth in the league standings with a record of 2-2-1. The team faces Guelph and Waterloo Sunday afternoon in Oakville.
