CURLING (M/W): CALGARY ENDS QUEEN’S QUEST AT CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Guelph, Ont. (March 15, 2008) – Queen’s Golden Gaels were defeated 6-4 by the Calgary Dinos on Saturday evening in the quarter-final match at the 2008 Canadian University Curling Championship.
The top rated Calgary rink proved they are for real as they defeated the No. 4 seeded Gaels to advance to Sunday’s semi-finals. Queen’s scored 1 in the 1st for an early lead but Calgary scored 3 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th and led 4-1 at the halfway break. Calgary added 1 in the 6th and 7th making it difficult for a Queen’s comeback. The Golden Gaels did post 2 in the 8th but it was not enough as Calgary moves on.
In round-robin play, Queen’s earned a 5-1 record and a share of the lead in Pool ‘B’ with Brock. Queen’s victories included wins over the Alberta, Western, Manitoba and St. Francis Xaivier. Their only loss came against Brock.
On the women’s side, the Gaels lost their bid to advance to the quarter-finals as the Guelph Gryphons topped Queen’s 8-3 in a tie-breaker. Guelph scored 2 in the 1st to post an early lead but the Golden Gaels rebounded with 2 of their own in the 2nd. However, the Gryphons notched 2 in the 3rd and another 3 in the 5th to take control and coasted to victory.
The 2008 OUA women’s silver medalists were skipped by Lisa Farnell, of Peterborough, Ont. with Kim Brown (Third) of Unionville, Ont., Courtney Anderson (Second) of Bromall, Pa., USA , Ali Cummings (Lead) of Toronto and Brittany Prevost (Fifth) of Williams Lake, B.C. rounding out the squad.
Queen’s men’s rink was led by Jon Beuk (Skip) of Mississauga, Ont. who teamed up with Jeff Grant (Third) of Peterborough, Ont., Greg Day (Second) of Kingston, Ont., Andrew Inouy (Lead) of Newmarket, Ont. and Chadd Vandermade (Fifth) of Brantford, Ont. Both squads were coached by 2008 OUA Curling Coach of the Year Scott Davey.
