Season Summary 2005-06

Last year’s heart breaking loss to U of T, which came down to a point count in the final race of the series, had the team highly motivated to raise their level for a run at regaining the coveted Ontario University Mountain Bike title in 2005. The mountain biking team brought in three new coaches who set up a more rigorous training program in comparison to previous years. Many members of the team also worked harder during the pre-season by racing competitively throughout the summer months.

The hard work paid off, as the Queen’s team put on a dominating performance at the first venue located at the Mansfield Outdoor Centre. The first event consisted of a three part race, consisting of an 800m crit and a 5km time trial on day one, followed by a long course XC race on the second day. After the dust settled, the Queen’s team managed to take 7 out of the possible 12 podium positions and left with a huge lead over the much larger team from U of T.

The second event of the series took place at Hardwood Hills, a world class MTB venue located in Barrie, Ontario. The team’s skills were put to the test as a steady rain fell throughout the day, making the trails extremely slick. However the Queen’s team managed to work through the dismal conditions to put together another solid showing, taking 6 of the possible 12 podium positions and further adding to their demanding lead over U of T.

The third event took place on the very fast trails of the Ganaraska conservation area. The team managed to continue their winning ways by taking 5 of the possible 12 podium positions.

The forth and final event located at Boler Mountain in London Ontario was merely a consolation event for the Queen’s team as they arrived with an almost insurmountable lead over U of T in the team division. However the Queen’s team still found motivation to race hard, taking another 5 podium positions. This was more than enough to solidify their first place finish in the team division, beating out 15 other competitive school.

Notable mentions include Greg Edgar who managed to win every event to place first overall in the Men’s A category. Andrew Robinson steadily improved throughout the season to take second place overall and Jon Braunstein rounded out the Queen’s sweep by placing third overall. Tim Philpot, Darryl McGrath, and Wai-Ben Wong all put in strong performances as well. In the Women’s A category Colleen Hammond rode steadily throughout the season to finish second overall. Catherine Vipond only managed to make it to two of the races but still managed to remain dominant over the rest of the field by winning both races. In the Men’s B category, newcomer James Northwood surprised the rest of the field by riding away with the overall title. Ryan Lutz, Cam Robertson and Andrew Hall all saw an immense improvement over last year and surprised themselves with very solid results. In the Women’s B category Rebecca Gerlach and Madalyn Armstrong pushed each other to place second and third overall, while Alicia Cooper was also outstanding in her first year.

The Queen’s team had an outstanding year for such a young team, and is looking forward to many more amazing years to come.
