Fifth-year wing player Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. ended her career with Queen's by claiming an OUA East Second Team All-Star selection. Barnes led the Gaels in scoring, averaging 13 points a game, was third on the team in rebounds, and led Queen's with 46 steals. Among her highlights this season was a 25-point evening in which she helped the Gaels come from behind and win over Carleton on January 25, as well as sinking a three-pointer with just 3.6 seconds remaining to upset Laurentian 73-71 in Sudbury, Ont. on January 12. Basketball (W): Moore Scores 24 in Bitter Playoff Loss to Carleton Kingston, Ont. (February 16, 2008) - The Queen's Golden Gaels had their season come to a conclusion with a 67-58 OUA East quarterfinal loss to the Carleton Ravens on Saturday afternoon. The Gaels, who entered the game as the fourth seed in the division, had trouble containing Raven point guard Tanya Perry of Barrie, Ont. who scored a game high 28 points. Similar to the two regular season meetings, Carleton got off to the better start scoring 14 of the first 20 points. Perry hit a layup and a three-point shot during the 14-6 run to start the game. Raven Kelly Killoran of Sarnia, Ont. hit a pair of three-point shots in the last four minutes of the opening quarter to give the visitors a 24-15 lead heading into the second. In the second period Queen's scored seven straight points in a one minute span to cut the Carleton lead to 27-22 with 7:40 remaining. The two teams exchanged baskets for the next five minutes but then Carleton went on a 7-2 run in the last three minutes of the half. Perry scored two layups and a free throw during the run as Queen's trailed 41-29 at intermission. In the third quarter Carleton again started well, scoring four of the first five points and were ahead 48-36 with 5:15 remaining. The Gaels started to show some life over the next four minutes as Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. hit a three pointer and layup during a 9-1 run by the host team. Moore's teammate Erin Skippon of Kelowna, B.C. scored four points as well to make it 49-45 with 1:10 left. However Carleton closed out the quarter scoring five of the last six points to lead 54-46. In the fourth quarter Perry ensured this would be Carleton's day, hitting for 11 points as she made shots to answer every Gael comeback attempt. Queen's got to within seven at 62-55 with 3:30 left, when Moore hit a three point shot but Perry made one of her own the next trip down the floor. For Queen's, Moore finished with a team high 24 points while Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. in her final game as a Gael, scored 11 points. Other than Perry's 28 points, Carleton received 11 points from Killoran. The Ravens shot 45.3% from the field including 55.6% in the pivotal first half, compared to the Gaels who shot just 36.4% from the floor. The loss means the Gaels finish the season with a 9-14 OUA record, while Carleton advances to the East division semi-finals where they will face either York or Toronto. Basketball (W): Moore Tallies 15 Points in Gaels Loss to Ravens
Queen's finishes with a 9-13 record and two points ahead of the fifth place Carleton Ravens who close their campaign at 8-14. Queen's will look to avenge tonight's loss when they meet Carleton next Saturday (February 16) in one of two OUA East Quarterfinal matchups. The Laurentian University Voyageurs will host the Ryerson University Rams, in Sudbury, Ont., in the other quarterfinal. (Both games times are TBA). Queen's came out sluggish in the first quarter as Carleton poured in 20 points while the Gaels only mustered five. Moore helped revive the struggling Gaels offence in the second and Queen's went into the half down 36-23. In the second half, Queen's used a six point run to tally 17 third quarter points while keeping the Ravens to nine. However, the Gaels ran out of steam in the fourth as the Ravens outscored the Gaels 16-10 in the final frame to win by 11 points. Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. and Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. both accumulated 8 points while Teddi Firmi of Kitchener, Ont. pulled down 9 rebounds to lead all Golden Gaels in rebounds. The Ravens were led by veteran Kelly Lyons of Brights Grove, Ont. with 13 points and 8 rebounds while Courtney Smith of Ottawa added 12 points. Basketball (W): Moore Scores 16 as Gaels Clinch Playoff Spot
Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. led the Gaels with a team high 16 points while veteran Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. contributed 11 points. The opening quarter saw the visiting Gaels open up a large lead by putting up 15 points compared to the Gee Gees 6. Ottawa tightened the game in the second and but the Gaels continued to lead 30-21 at the half. Queen's kept up the offensive pressure in the third-quarter by outscoring their opponents 22-19 and held a 12 point lead heading into the final frame (52-40). In the fourth, the Gaels started to struggle on the defensive side of the ball giving up 26 points while scoring only 16 which saw Ottawa make the game much closer. Queen's managed to hold off the comeback and earned a slim victory and a ticket to the playoffs. On the other side of the court, Ottawa was led by Hannah Sunley-Paisly of Toronto recorded 17 points, while Melina Wishart of Ottawa, Ont, who added 12 of her own. Queen's will close the regular season on Saturday with the Gaels taking on the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa with the game starting at 6:00pm. The Gaels currently have a 9-12 record and cannot move up or down in the standings. With the win the Gaels clinch a home-playoff matchup which will be played on Saturday, February 16 (Time TBA). Basketball (W): Barnes Scores 22 in OT Loss Against York
York started the game on a 6-0 run before the Gaels earned their first point and the first quarter ended with the Lions holding a slim 17-13 lead. Queen's had trouble in the second quarter making shots and poured in just eight points while the Lions managed 12 to give them a 29-21 halftime lead. In the third, the Gaels evened the score by posting 22 points and played a better defensive game which set up an exciting fourth quarter. In the fourth, York and Queen's exchanged leads and kept pace with each other. The Gaels were never able to open up a solid lead which led to a the score being knotted at the buzzer resulting in an overtime frame. The five minute over-time period the Lions pull away early posting 11 points while Queen's could only muster six points. A late surge by the Gaels was turned away and the Lions posted the victory as the clock wound down. Barnes was the top point getter, but was helped by guard Teddi Firmi of Kitchener, Ont., who had a game high five assists. The York Lions were led by Emily Van Hoof of Lindsay, Ont. with 21 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Following the game, the Gaels honoured three graduating players from this year's squad including Barnes, Amanda Northcott of Lower Sackville, N.S. and Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. Queen's will travel to Ottawa on February 8th to play the Ottawa Gee-GeeÕs beginning at 6:00pm. That game will be webcast live on the SSN network. The Gaels currently sit in fourth place of the OUA East division with 16 points and a record of 8-12. They are four points ahead of Carleton and 12 points behind Laurentian for third place. Basketball (W): Barnes Helps Gaels Rebound in Win Against Laurentian
Queen's was also successful in preventing Laurentian guard Cassandra Carpenter of Kanata, Ont. from achieving the all-time CIS record for most points in a career. Carpenter needed 19 points to tie the mark and 20 to surpass it but only registered 16 on the evening. She is just four points away from attaining the mark and will likely record the milestone on Saturday when Laurentian goes head-to-head against the Royal Military College of Canada. The first quarter saw the Voyageurs go on an early 7-0 run to take the early lead, however the Gaels fought back to tie the game. The quarter ended up with Laurentian holding a slim four point lead at 17-13. In the second quarter the Gaels shifted into gear and saw Barnes and rookie Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. play a major role in a dominating quarter. Moore made two key three point shots while Barnes added one of her own, plus a three point play when she scored on a impressive shot while being fouled. The Gaels scored 32 points in the frame and took a 45-32 lead into the half break. Laurentian tightened the game in the third while the Gaels relied on solid defensive play to maintain their lead with a 59-47 mark after three frames. In the fourth, the Gaels were hard pressed to hold onto their lead over the Voyageurs and key defensive play from the entire team turned away the comeback attempt. Laurentian closed to within three points of tying the game, however the Gaels stood firm and a solid 75-69 victory. Darrah Bumstead of New Hamburg, Ont. was the leading scorer for Laurentian who had a game high 21 points and seven rebounds. The Gaels sit in fourth place in the OUA East at 8-11 with just three games to play. Tomorrow Queen's will take on the York Lions inside Bartlett Gym at Queen's University tipping off at 6:00pm. Basketball (M/W): Gaels Try To Bounce Back From Midweek Losses
Friday night the ladies face the division's third place team, Laurentian who are trying to catch Toronto and York for one of the first round playoff byes. Last season the Voyageurs lost out on a first round bye courtesy of a tiebreaker with Queen's and the Gaels used the rest to help them defeat Laurentian in the OUA East semi finals last February. The Sudbury school comes into this weekend with the top scorer in the country with fifth year All Canadian guard Cassandra Carpenter. Carpenter of Kanata, Ont. is the only player in the CIS averaging 20 points or more this season (20.8) and scores almost half her points from the free throw line. She is 109 for 157 from the charity stripe and one of two players in Canada that have attempted more than 89 free throws this season, with the University of Calgary's Michelle Wilson of Red Deer, Alta. having shot 109 from the line. The following night Queen's takes on the East division's defending champion York Lions who won last year's title on home court over the Gaels February 24th. This season York has won eight of their last nine since a 64-62 loss at Laurier December 1st. The only loss during that span was at Laurentian in a game where Lions fourth year star Laura McCallum of Paris, Ont. was injured. The Toronto school's last game was January 26th against the Toronto Varsity Blues and without McCallum the Lions were able to hang for a 73-70 victory despite being outscored 34-15 in the fourth quarter. McCallum scored the 1000th point of her career in a 68-52 win over the Gaels earlier this month at York. The Gaels enter the weekend in fourth place but just four points ahead of fifth place Carleton who they play to close the season February 9th in Ottawa. For the men their two games could have a huge bearing on who their opponent could be in the playoffs. The Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions enter the weekend two points apart for the sixth and final postseason berth in the OUA East but they are also right on the heels of fifth place Ryerson. The Gaels went to Sudbury to face Laurentian, January 12th and won easily 87-48 as Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. scored a team high 21 points and the Mitchell brothers Simon and Travis of Navan, Ont. combined to score 30. Queen's led the game 46-22 at halftime and built the advantage to 27 points heading into the fourth quarter. The night before playing in Sudbury, the Gaels got some revenge against York in Toronto for the Lions eliminating Queen's in last season's quarterfinals, defeating the host Lions 78-56. Simon Mitchell scored a team high 22 points in the game with Leger adding 20. The Gaels led 60-39 heading into the fourth quarter and shot almost 50% from the floor. Gaels fourth year guard Simon Mitchell is on a roll scoring 20 or more points in three of his last seven games and is averaging 17.2 over that three week span. Tuesday in the loss to Ottawa, Mitchell hit four from beyond the three point line giving him 33 on the season, tenth best in the OUA. The other Mitchell brother, rookie Travis, has been playing better offensively as well. In his last three games he has scored in double figures in each, highlighted by a 20 point performance January 25th against the defending national champion Carleton Ravens. Included in the season high total was five for seven shooting from long distance. The Gaels enter the weekend in fourth needing just one win or one Ryerson loss to lock up a home court quarterfinal game which will take place Wednesday, February 20th. The games Friday and Saturday nights get underway at 6pm with the women's matchup followed at 8pm by the men. Get their early as the Bartlett Gym is filling up fast for Gaels sports. The push to the playoffs starts this weekend. Gaels Lose 68-63 To Ottawa
Queen's started slowly after scoring the game's first two points as Ottawa built a 9-3 lead with 6:50 left in the opening quarter. The Gaels proceeded to respond with an 11-3 run for the next three minutes to lead 14-12. Queen's were ahead 19-18 after the quarter behind eight points from rookie guard Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. To start the second quarter Queen's scored the first six points to lead 25-18 with just 1:45 gone. However, the Gee Gees answered with an 11-2 run over the next five minutes to retake the lead at 29-27. The teams exchanged baskets the final three minutes with Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. hitting a jumper from the right elbow of the key just before the halftime buzzer to make it 33-32 Queen's at the break. The Gee Gees blocked six Gaels shots in the first 20 minutes. In the key third quarter the Gee Gees scored the first four points and then after an Alaina Porter of Burlington, Ont. basket made it 41-40 Queen's with 3:05 left Ottawa closed with a 10-2 run to lead 50-43. The fourth quarter saw the Gaels sloppy play continue and the visitors took advantage. Katie Laurie of Ottawa scored back to back baskets to cap a 8-3 run and put the Gee Gees ahead 58-46 with 6:18 remaining. The Gaels who were playing the game without guard Jaime Dale of Ottawa who was injured and then starting guard Teddi Firmi fouled out with 5:04 left and her team trailing 59-50. The Gee Gees continued to keep the lead and after a Laurier basket with 90 seconds left were in front 65-53. The Gaels tried to make a valiant comeback as Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. and Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. hit three point shots 24 seconds apart to make it 65-61. The Gee Gees were able to hang on though and win just their second game of the season but second in their last three. Ottawa got a great performance from Sarah Van Hooydonk of Edmonton, Alta. who scored a game high 24 points while Laurie added 18 and Emilie Morasse of Beauport, Que. chipped in with 14. For Queen's Moore scored a team high 18 points with Porter adding 12 but Gaels leading scorer Sarah Barnes was held to eight points on two of ten shooting from the floor. The loss drops the Gaels to 7-11 and leaves them in fourth just four points ahead of fifth place Carleton who defeated RMC tonight 63-44. Queen's is home this weekend when they play the Laurentian Voyageurs Friday night February 1st at 6pm in the the Bartlett Gym. Gaels Rout RMC 93-45
The Gaels who used a 24-7 fourth quarter to comeback and defeat visiting Carleton 69-64 Friday night were the better team against the Paladins right from the opening tip. Queen's outscored RMC 19-7 in the first quarter and went into halftime with a 44-30 lead. In the second half the Gaels tightened up defensively and held the Paladins to just 15 second half points which included seven from the foul line. Queen's held their cross town rivals to just eight points from the field as they ran their record to 7-10 six points ahead of fifth place Carleton and Ryerson. All 10 on the Gaels roster scored at least 10 points with five players scoring double figures. Leading the way for Queen's was rookie Alaina Porter of Burlington, Ont. who scored 15 points with fellow freshman Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. scoring 14. Veterans Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont., and Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont., both scored 12, while rookie Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. had 11 points and Erin Skippon of Kelowna, B.C. scored 10. The Gaels next home game is this Tuesday at 6pm at the Physical Education Centre in Bartlett Gym when they host the Ottawa Gee Gees. Basketball (W): Gaels Come From Behind To Defeat Carleton 69-64
The Ravens were the dominant team to start the game scoring ten of the first 12 points and leading 22-4 with two minutes left in the opening quarter. The Gaels closed the quarter with five straight free throws and a layup from Teddi Firmi of Kitchener, Ont. to make the score 22-11 heading into the second. In the second stanza Queen's opened with the first four points before Carleton went on an 8-2 run for three minutes to lead 30-17. The Ravens built their advantage to 37-25 after two free throws with 2:03 remaining in the half and went into the intermission ahead 39-31. To start the second half the Ravens were again the sharper team leading 51-34 midway through the third quarter after a three point play by Kelly Lyons of Brights Grove, Ont. The Gaels behind two layups from Firmi controlled the last five minutes but could only close to 12 by the end of the quarter. The final quarter began with the Gaels and Ravens exchanging baskets to make the score 59-49 two with eight minutes left. Queen's then got rolling as Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. hit a layup, followed by a Firmi layup, a basket from Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. and a three point shot from Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. to make it 59-56 with 6:35 remaining. The Gaels started their final push for the victory with 3:50 left on a steal and break away layup by Maddie Soye of Kitchener, a Firmi layup and when Firmi passed to Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. for a layup the Tricolour was within one point with two minutes left. Barnes hit a layup with 1:10 remaining to give the Gaels their first lead of the game at 64-63. Then the key play happened 26 seconds later when with six on the shot clock, the Gaels inbounded the ball under the Carleton basket to Moore who hit a three point shot to give Queen's a four point lead. Carleton was called for travel six seconds later and the Gaels clinched the victory from the foul line. Barnes said the fourth quarter comeback was keyed by their team defence "People stepped up and everybody contributed and that was critical". Firmi added that no one player got emotional with the team trailing. "Everybody is trying to be really positive on the bench so then we are able to come together as a team and that is where the motivation comes from.". The win improves the Gaels to 6-10 and keeps them in fourth place of the OUA East while Carleton falls to 3-13 staying in sixth. Queen's is home next Tuesday, January 29th when they entertain the Ottawa Gee Gees at 6pm in the Bartlett Gym. Gaels Outrebounded In 71-56 Loss At Toronto
Toronto led the entire game with advantages of 17-14, 37-28 and 56-38 at the end of each of the first three quarters. The Blues made 15 of 17 foul shots compared to the Gaels who were 10 of 15 from the charity stripe. The Gaels were led by fifth year veteran Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. who pumped in 16 points, including all three of her three point shots. Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. added 13 points and rookie Alaina Porter of Burlington, Ont. tallied 10. Both Barnes and Murphy had a team high seven rebounds as the Gaels fell to 5-10 but still are in fourth in the OUA East two points ahead of Ryerson. Queen's is home next Friday night, January 25th when they host the Carleton Ravens at 6pm in the Bartlett Gym. Gaels Shoot Poorly In 53-45 Loss At Ryerson
The Gaels were 11-7 after the first quarter and 27-24 at halftime but their struggles from the floor which included hitting only one of their 11 three pointers allowed the host Rams to win their second straight game of the season. In the fourth quarter the Gaels fell behind but closed to 50-45 with 1:55 left after a layup from Alaina Porter of Burlington, Ont. However the Rams made their foul shots down the stretch including critical ones from Lisa Goldring of Burlington and Kaitlyn Taylor of Sydney, N.S. to lock up the victory. Taylor led all scorers with 17 points and added six rebounds while Rebecca Cox of Renfrew, Ont. scored 12 and Goldring chipped in with 11. Ryerson's Lacey Sullivan of Port Colborne had a game high 10 rebounds with Goldring pulling down eight boards. For the Gaels Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. and Christine Wallace of North Gower led the way with seven points apiece. Barnes added nine rebounds and Jaime Dale pitched in with six points and seven boards. Despite the loss Queen's stays in fourth place of the OUA East with a 5-9 record four points ahead of Ryerson and Carleton. The Gaels next game is Saturday night, January 19th against the 12-3 Toronto Varsity Blues who defeated RMC Friday night 67-25. Gaels Upset Laurentian 73-71
Queen's came out the hotter of the two teams in the first quarter jumping out to a quick lead by way of their three-point shooting. The Lady Vees came out slowly, failing to convert their jump shots but midway through the quarter Laurentian began to settle down. However, the Gaels early cushion allowed them to take a 20-18 lead going into the second. Queen's picked up right where they left off at the end of the first, converting their three point shots, and built up a 25-20 lead early on. Again, midway through the quarter the Lady Vees were able to trim the lead, but poor offensive execution late in the quarter allowed Queen's to carry a 38-31 advantage into halftime. Laurentian was a much different team to start the second half, however, as they went on an early 10-2 run to take their first lead since early in the first quarter, the run being sparked by a big three point shot from Carpenter. However, the two teams would trade baskets for the last five minutes of the quarter and would be tied at 48 going into the fourth. The fourth quarter went back and forth all the way down to the final buzzer with Queen's getting things started with a big three point basket on their first possession. The Lady Vees battled back, carrying two five point leads throughout different points of the quarter but the Gaels would stick around, managing to convert points in the paint, something that has not come easy against the Sudbury school. Laurentian held a slim 71-70 lead with 23.4 seconds to play but Barnes took matters into her own hands as she hit a deep three-pointer with 3.6 seconds left to silence the Ben Avery Gym and steal the upset victory for Queen's. For the Gaels Jamie Dale of Ottawa added 11 points to Barnes' 23 as the Tricolour shot 38% from the field 38% from behind the three point line while holding the Lady Vees to just 21% from long range. The victory improves Queen's to 5-8, solidifying their hold on fourth in the OUA East by six points over the Carleton Ravens. The Gaels are on the road again next weekend playing at 2-11 Ryerson Friday January 18th and at the 11-3 Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday January 19th. Both games tip off in Toronto at 6pm. Queen's Downed 68-52 at York
In a rematch of last season's OUA East final, won by York, the Lions (10-2) pulled away in the second half and extended their winning streak to three games. Queen's opened the first quarter on top (18-11), taking a seven point lead into the second quarter but squandered it in the second as York moved ahead by two points at the half (30-28). York continued to widen the gap in the third quarter and Queen's, whose record drops to 4-8, couldn't keep pace. York forward Emily Van Hoof (Lindsay, Ont.) led all players with 21 points. Anne Murphy (Milford, Ont.) led the Gaels with 17 points. She was the only player to hit double figures for Queen's. The Gaels look to rebound as they head to Sudbury for a Saturday night match-up against Laurentian beginning at 6:00pm. Women's Basketball Defeats Ryerson 62-44
In the first half Queen's led 12-5 midway through the opening quarter and then proceeded to hold the Rams scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and the first 5:34 of the second ten minute period. During the nine and a minute shut down by Queen's and their defence the Tricolour responded by building a 17 point which they carried into halftime. In the second half Ryerson was unable to make any runs at the Gaels' lead, getting no closer than 14 points. Leading the way for Queen's were Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. and Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. who both scored 10 points. Every Queen's player scored and played at least 10 minutes. Lisa Goldring of Burlington, Ont. was the only Ram in double digits tallying 10 points. The Gaels improve to 4-7 while Ryerson falls to 1-11. Queen's will not be back to the Bartlett Gym until Friday January 25th when they host the Carleton Ravens. Next weekend the Gaels travel to York and Laurentian for games with the first place Lions and third place Lady Vees. Women's Basketball Loses 74-65 To Toronto
Toronto behind a 23-11 rebounding advantage took control of the game right from the opening tip. Queen's outscored the Blues 15-10 in the second quarter to close to within four at halftime 32-28. The Gaels opened the second half with five straight points in the first minute to take their first lead 33-32. Toronto forward Christine Cho of Lithia Springs, GA hit a three pointer in between baskets by Alaine Hutton of Hamilton and Jessica Hiew of Canberra, Australia to put the visitors up 43-36 midway through the quarter. The Blues built the lead to 16 with 1:40 left in the third and went into the fourth ahead 58-45. The Gaels opened the final quarter like the third with a five point run which closed them to within eight. After Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. hit a layup with 4:18 left in the game Queen's ws within five at 63-58. The Blues like they did all second half had an answer for the Gaels run with a Cho three point shot and a free throw to build their lead back up to nine. The Gaels would never threaten again as they fell to 3-7 in OUA play. Toronto now 8-3 in the OUA East were Cho and Hutton who both had 18 points with Cho good on eight of 11 from the floor. Cho added nine rebounds with teammate Amanda Van Leeuwen grabbing a game high 12 as the Blues outrebounded Queen's 38-24 for the game. Leading the Gaels was Barnes who had a game high 25 points on 10 for 19 shooting including five for seven from behind the three point line. Murphy added 12 points for Queen's but shot just six for 15 from the floor as the Tricolour shot 38.9% for the game. The Gaels are back in the Bartlett Gym tomorrow night January 5th at 6pm when they host the Ryerson Rams who won their first OUA game of the season 68-49 at RMC Friday night. Jaime Dale of Ottawa put up 20 points to go along with Moore's 19 to help the Gaels break a three game losing skid and earn their third win of the season. The Gaels opened the game down 24-19 after the first quarter, but rallied for 16 points in the second quarter and holding the Thunderwolves to just 7 points to earn a 35-31 lead at the half. In the third quarter, Queen's continued to build on the lead dropping 20 plus points in both the third and fourth to finish with a 23 point victory. Moore, 18, is in her first year with the Gaels and prior to tonight's game was averaging only five points per game. Her career high before tonight was eight which she scored in the season opener against cross-town rival RMC. "I just tried to go out there and play; a lot of shots were going in there for me," said Moore. "I feel like our team pulled together much more and that was really what earned us this win." Head Coach Dave Wilson was impressed with Moore's performance but said this victory was key for the teams morale heading into the exam/holiday break. "We've been experimenting with Brit a little more where she can shoot the ball in more situations taking some pressure off other players," said Wilson. "We've known for a while she can shoot the ball but the entire team has been struggling so it's nice to see her drop 19." "No question we"ve been struggling and to get a win now [before the break] to take a little bit of the pressure off is huge," said Wilson. "It's huge for the coaches because we've been trying to find answers, and it's huge for the players to take a little weight off their shoulders before the break." The Gaels take a record of 3-6 into the holiday break which puts them in fourth place of the OUA East Division. Queen's will return to action on December 28-30 at the Concordia Invitational Tournament. Regular season action returns on Friday, January 4, 2008 as Queen's host the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Marauders led 40-21 at halftime and built the lead to 27 at the end of the third quarter. All ten McMaster players scored and the visitors were dominant on the glass outrebounding Queen's 42-24. McMaster was led by 2006-07 All Canadian Lindsay DeGroot of Thedford, Ont. who had a game high 20 points with Deanna Hollinger of Waterloo, Ont. adding 11 and Rachel Hart of Ancaster, Ont. recording a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. For Queen's their leading scorer was Erin Skippon of Kelowna, B.C. with 12 points and Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. chipping in with nine points. The Gaels fall to 2-6 and return to action Saturday December 1st when they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Women's Basketball Loses 58-45 At Waterloo
Queen's continue to have trouble finding their scoring touch as they fell behind 26-14 after the first quarter to the Warriors. In the second quarter the offensive problems continued as the Gaels scored just five points in the ten minute period and went into halftime trailing 35-19. The Tricolour made just 16 of their 60 shots from the field including two for 13 from behind the three point line. Conversely Waterloo did most of their scoring close to the basket as they attempted only one three point shot. Fifth year Gaels veteran Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. was the team's leading scorer for the second straight game with 12 points. Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. added seven points while Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. was one of three Queen's players to score six points. The Gaels record is now 2-5 keeping them in fourth place in the OUA East just two points ahead of Carleton. Queen's returns to the Bartlett Gym next weekend against the McMaster Marauders Friday November 30th and the Lakehead Thunderwolves Saturday December 1st. Both games will tip off at 6pm with Friday's game being Coca Cola Athlete of the Term Night and Saturday's game Primetime Community Day. Gaels Lose 68-62 (OT) At Laurier
Queen's was outrebounded by the Golden Hawks 44-34 and shot just 32% from the field. They were able to stay close to Laurier courtesy of the foul line where Queen's went 15 fewer times then the Golden Hawks. However the hosts made just 18 of their 32 free throws. The Gaels were led by Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. who scored a team high 15 points with Jamie Dale of Ottawa, Ont. and Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. both scoring 11. Despite the loss Queen's remains in fourth in the OUA East with a 2-4 mark. The Gaels stay in Waterloo overnight as they face the Warriors Saturday night at the University of Waterloo. Basketball (W): Queen's squeak past Windsor 69-65 Windsor, Ont. (November 17, 2007) - Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont., had 17 points as the Golden Gaels earned their second victory of the season topping the Windsor Lancers 69-65, Saturday evening in Windsor, Ont. The Gaels got off to a quick start building an early 16-9 first quarter lead but Windsor erased the seven point deficit in the second quarter to tie the game 26-26 at the half. In the second half, the game went back and forth and neither team was able to establish much control with the lead flip-flopping throughout the third and fourth quarters. In the fourth, Queen's converted on a couple of clutch offensive possessions and made several key free throws late to earn the 69-65 victory. In addition to her 17 points Murphy also had six rebounds including five key defensive rebounds. Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. contributed 15 points while Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. had 11 points and six rebounds for the Gaels. Raelyn Prince of Harrow, Ont., was the top player for Lancers, finishing with 15 points and 20 rebounds on the night - 15 coming in the defensive end. Emily Ross of New Minas, N.S., was the leading Lancer scorer with 20 points. Women's Basketball Loses 60-49 At Western
Again for Queen's Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. was the offensive star with 15 points and six rebounds while Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. and Jamie Dale of Ottawa, Ont. both added nine points. The loss drops the Gaels to 1-3 in the OUA East division. For Western Amanda Anderson of Chatham, Ont. scored a game high 20 points with Nadine Paron of Arva, Ont. and Bess Lennox of Ottawa adding 11 and 13 points respectively. Queen's is at Windsor tomorrow night to play the Lancers and the Tricolour will not return to the Bartlett Gym till Friday November 30th at 6pm when they host the currently undefeated McMaster Marauders. Women's Basketball Loses 75-70 To Guelph
The Gaels led by a point after the first quarter 16-15 but trailed at halftime by nine. Queen's who turned the ball over almost 40 times in their overtime loss Friday night to Brock committed just eight against Guelph. However, they could not take advantage of the 22 Guelph turnovers and were also outrebounded 44-31 by the Gryphons. Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. led the Gaels with 14 points while Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. and Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. both added 13. For Guelph Kris Yallin of Port Colborne, Ont. scored a game high 26 with Heather Angus of Burlington, Ont. adding 17. The Gaels return to action next weekend when they travel to play at Western Friday November 16th and Windsor Saturday November 17th. Queen's will be back at the Bartlett Gym Friday November 30th when they host the nationally ranked McMaster Marauders at 6pm. Women's Basketball Loses In Overtime 55-53 To Brock
Neither team shot the ball well with Queen's shooting 31.6% from the field, including 0-9 in overtime and the Badgers shot just a bit better at 32.7%. Hollinshead led Brock with 18 points while Gaels guard Jamie Dale of Ottawa, Ont. scored a game high 22. Hollinshead and Dale were the only two players to score in double figures. Brock head coach Chris Critelli the victory was a case of her squad out grinding the Gaels. "We have not scored a lot of points this season so we have to rely on defence and today we were better at that than our first two league games". The victory moves Brock to 1-2 in OUA play while the Gaels fall to 1-1. Queen's returns to action Saturday November 10th at 6pm when they host the Guelph Gryphons at the Bartlett Gym. Women's Basketball Defeats Concordia 77-69 Concordia's Heather Eason of Kirkland, Que. hit a three pointer to make it a five point game but then with the shot clock expiring Queen's Jaime Dale of Nepean, Ont. hit a desperation three with just 22.9 seconds left to make it 77-69. After a Concordia timeout the Stingers missed a shot and the Gaels retrieved the rebound and dribbled out the clock for their second win of the weekend. Queen's led after the first quarter 23-22 and 40-37 at halftime but trailed 58-56 heading into the fourth quarter. The Gaels who beat RMC in their OUA season opener Friday night and lost Saturday afternoon 57-53 to UQAM improve their preseason record to 4-5-1. Queen's was led by Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. with 16 points and 13 rebounds with Maddie Soye of Kitchener, Ont. and Amanda Northcott of Lower Sackville, N.S. each scoring 12. For Concordia Krystie Douglas of Chateauguay, Que. was the game's high scorer with 20 points, while Ebony Morris of Montreal, Que. and Eason both chipped in with 15 points. Women's Basketball Loses 57-53 To UQAM GAELS DEFEAT RMC ON PINK RIBBON NIGHT Kingston, Ont. (November 2, 2007) –The Golden Gaels won their OUA women’s basketball season opener 88-54 over cross town rivals RMC Paladins on Pink Ribbon Night at Queen’s University on Friday night. The Gaels jumped on top of the Paladins right from the start, racing to a double digit lead and never looked back. Queen’s led 24-12 after the first quarter and built the lead to 16 by halftime. In the third, they were able to balloon the lead to 30 points. Gaels forward Anne Murphy of Milford, Ont. led the way with her first double-double night of the season taking home 15 points and 11 rebounds. “Anne is just rock solid,” said Head Coach Dave Wilson. “She is one of those tough really physical kids who knows how to get the job done inside. RMC actually triple teamed her in the first half and she was able to find the open player for points.” Also contributing for the Gaels was Amanda Northcott of Lower Sackville, N.S. who had a team high 18 points with rookies Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont. and Alaina Porter of Burlington, Ont. adding 14 and 11 respectively. For RMC, Jennifer Donofrio of Kingston led the way with 17 points. Queen’s were playing for more than just a home opener victory as Friday’s game was Pink Ribbon Night with the Gaels playing in support of a future without breast cancer. Queen’s donated the entire Gates receipt to the cause while the women’s basketball program matched the score in dollars. Fans were encouraged to wear pink to the game and show further support by making donations throughout the game via a 50/50 draw as well as donation cards provided by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The women’s squad also paid honour to the evening wearing pink ribbons on their uniforms and some players adorning pink headbands. RMC also showed support by some members wearing pink socks. Wilson was proud of the support from the Kingston community. “It was quite an enthusiastic crowd and certainly showed the support for our team, but the cause in general. I think this is the start of an initiative that we can really grow and become an annual event.” The Gaels return to action next Friday November 9th when they entertain the Brock Badgers in a men's and women's doubleheader. The women will tipoff at 6pm in the Bartlett Gym with the men following at 8pm.
Women's Basketball Finishes Third At Western Invitational Queen's Ties University of PEI Truro, N.S. (October 21, 2007) – Women’s basketball wrapped up their exhibition Atlantic road swing by tying the University of Prince Edward Island 57-57 in Truro, N.S. on Sunday. The Gaels trailed the Panthers by 14 heading into the fourth quarter but rallied to tie on a foul shot which ended the game in regulation. Due to Queen’s departure time from Halifax, both teams mutually agreed not contest overtime and call the exhibition game a tie. “This is a first for me in 27 years. I don’t ever recall being involved in a tie,” said Head coach Dave Wilson in a phone message late on Sunday night. Queen’s rookie point guard Brittany Moore of Hamilton led the tricolour with 14 points. The Tricolour finished with a 1-1-1 record while away on their Atlantic road trip. On Friday they lost 70-48 to Cape Breton Capers and then a day later edged them 77-72. Next Friday the Gaels will head to the University of Western Ontario for a three-day invitational tournament. The Western Invitational goes October 26-28.

Queen's will host the Rockets, who are a NCAA Division-I School, beginning 6:00pm at the Bartlett Gym on Campus in the Physical Education Centre (PEC). The Golden Gaels squad sees nine returning players with four of its starting line-up from last year still intact. Head Coach David Wilson says the international match-up should prove to be an excellent pre-season test for the Gaels veteran squad. "Our players are excited that they are getting an opportunity to compete this early in the season," said Wilson. "It's a great opportunity to play against other scholarship athletes and a chance for our coaching staff to evaluate how our summer training program has progressed." The Women's Basketball team has stayed together throughout the summer, training for the upcoming season in preparation to strengthen their chances for this year. Last year the Gaels finished second in their division and bowed out in the OUA East Final. Toledo will also travel to London, Ont. to take on the University of Western Mustangs on Sunday before returning home. Tickets to the game on campus are only $6.00 for an adult and $4.00 for a youth (ages 12 and under). Participants of the 2007 Queen's University Basketball Summer Camps are entitled free entry if they wear their 2007 Basketball Camp Shirt. Fans can purchase tickets at the PEC's ticket window or by calling (613) 533-6000 x74715. CIS, Canada Basketball launch Canada First info guide
The information guide, developed in partnership with Canada Basketball, showcases what Canadian university basketball has to offer future university student-athletes. The handbook describes scholarships available to student-athletes, explains what is special about each university basketball program, and outlines what an athlete who is interested in playing at a Canadian university should do. The guide was officially launched at Basketball Ontario’s Elite Development Camp taking place at York University on Friday, June 29. Seventy-two elite players in grades 11 and 12 received copies of the book. “We are very pleased to launch the handbook and get the message out about how great Canadian women’s basketball is,” said CIS Chief Executive Officer, Marg McGregor. “A common and outdated misconception is that athletic awards and scholarships are only available south of the border. In fact about one in two CIS student-athletes receive financial support to pursue their athletics and academics in Canada.” Pam Danis, president of the CIS women’s basketball coaches association and head coach at the University of Manitoba, is also enthusiastic about the initiative. “We look forward to getting this information into the hands of university bound players and their families and coaches so that informed decisions can be made about where to attend university. Several CIS coaches are involved with Canada’s national team program and we are very proud of the quality of our coaches, and quality of the education and athlete development that student-athletes benefit from in Canada.” Canada Basketball partnered with CIS in the publication of the handbook. According to Canada Basketball athletes who choose to attend a Canadian university receive:
“This is a great resource for female athletes, parents and coaches to make an educated decision on where they want to continue their post-secondary education and athletic careers,” commented Allison McNeill, Head Coach, Canadian Senior Women’s National Team. Copies of the handbook are available online at: About Canadian Interuniversity Sport Canadian Interuniversity Sport is the national governing body of university sport in Canada. 51 universities, 10,000 student-athletes and 550 coaches vie for 19 national championships in 11 different sports. Gaels Host Ottawa Schools And "Meet and Greet Social"
The men's basketball team hosts two nationally ranked teams in the #3 Carleton Ravens, the four time defending national champions, and the #9 Ottawa Gee Gees. Saturday against the Gee Gees the Gaels face a team they upset January 19th in the Nation's Capital 65-64 on a Mitch Leger foul shot with 0.5 seconds left in the game. Since that game the Gee Gees have won four of five beating Carleton and York but losing on Friday night by two points to the Toronto Varsity Blues. In those five games second year Gee Gee guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe has spearheaded their resurgence averaging 14 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists. Third year guard Sean Peter is also playing well over that five game span averaging almost 14 points a game with teammate Alex McLeod having scored 33 points on the weekend in a 2 point loss to Toronto and 13 point win over Ryerson. Ottawa is in second place in the OUA and can clinch that spot and a first round playoff bye with a win this weekend. Speaking of clinching the Carleton Ravens can wrap up first in the OUA with a win Friday night against the Gaels despite dropping two games in less than two weeks. The Ravens pounded the Gaels 77-60 in Ottawa on January 20th and have only lost 6 times to Queen's in 31 games since 1990. Osvaldo Jeanty last year's CIS Player of the Year leads the Ravens in scoring with 17.22 ppg. Carleton comes to town with a Kingston area connection starting with their Head Coach Dave Smart a former star player with the Queen's Golden Gaels and Napanee native. On the Ravens roster they have Aaron Doornekamp (Ernestown High School), Stu Turnbull (Frontenac High School) and Rob Saunders (Frontenac High School) who all in their third year have lost just 4 games in their career. The Gaels are hoping to end a slide that has seen them lose two straight and four of their last six dropping them into fifth in the OUA two points back of fourth place Toronto. Queen's lost 66-56 at Laurentian Friday night and 84-77 at York the following night. Rookie Mitch Leger seems to have gotten back on track scoring 31 points in the weekend defeats. The Gaels continue to lead the country in free throw shooting hitting 77.5 % from the line. The women's basketball team hosts the same two Ottawa schools with a first round playoff bye within reach. The Gaels 12-7 are in third in the OUA two points back of the Laurentian Voyageurs but with the tiebreaker in their favour. Queen's lost both of their games on the weekend 57-56 to Laurentian and 55-42 to first place York. When the Gaels faced Ottawa and Carleton in January they beat both schools 50-45 and 68-54 respectively. Fifth year star Claire Meadows continues to roll for Queen's scoring 18 points on Saturday in the loss to York, giving her 934 in her career as she tries to reach the 1000 point plateau. Teammate Jessica Selinger continues to be the best in Canada from the free throw line, shooting at a 92.9 % clip, making 52 of her 56 attempts. The Ottawa Gee Gees come into Saturday's game off a two game weekend sweep of Ryerson and Toronto. Their 61-52 victory over the Varsity Blues was only Ottawa's sixth in 31 meetings since 1990 with the Toronto school. Katie Laurie leads the Gee Gees averaging 8.9 ppg and a team high 7.1 rpg. On Friday night a capacity crowd is expected at the Bartlett Gym with the games both nights tipping off at 6pm Friday and Saturday night with the women's game and the men following at 8pm. Advance tickets are available for the Men's and Women's Basketball games this weekend. They may be purchased in person at the Physical Education center at 69 Union Street, between 10:00 am and 4:30 pm. They can also be purchased over the phone by calling (613) 533-6000 x 74715, during the same hours. After the games Friday night everyone is invited to "Meet the Gaels " at the Ale House Canteen. The Meet and Greet Social will start around 10pm at the Ale House Canteen in the Hub. Everyone is welcome so come out and celebrate Golden Gaels Basketball. Women's Basketball Loses 55-42 At York

Gaels Basketball Travels To Sudbury and Toronto This Weekend Kingston, ON (January 29, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's and women's basketball teams go into this weekend's roadtrip with a chance to gain home court for the playoffs. The women's team has won four in a row and sits in second place in the OUA East with a record of 12-5. This Friday and Saturday the Gaels face the two teams sandwiched around them in the standings. First up the third place Laurentian Voyageurs led by fourth year Kanata native Cassandra Carpenter who is second in the OUA and fourth in the country in scoring averaging 21.40 ppg. Carpenter scored 17 points January 6th in a 65-62 (OT) loss to the Gaels who got 30 points from Jessica Selinger. Voyageurs guard Katie Goggins scored a team high 21 points in the January 6th loss which is 12 above her season average. The next night Queen's faces the only team ahead of them in the standings the 15-2 York Lions. When the two teams played January 5th in Kingston the Lions dominated right from the opening tip racing out to a 35-16 lead by halftime and coasting to a 66-45 win. The Lions and Gaels are two of the best defensive teams in the league with York in second giving up 55.76 ppg and the Queen's in third giving up 58.41 ppg. Queen's will try and take advantage of their three point shooting which is best in the division against a York three point defence that sits in 12th in the OUA. Claire Meadows and Jessica Selinger continue to lead the Gaels averaging 14 and 12 ppg respectively. Last weekend Meadows scored 19 and 10 points in the wins over Toronto and Ryerson with Selinger tallying 22 and 14 in those games. Selinger in Friday night's win over Toronto was 14 for 15 from the foul line making her 46 for 50 for the regular season good for top spot in the OUA and second in Canada behind Karine Bibeau of Laval. The men face a must win weekend if they hope to get home court for a playoff game this season. The Gaels are 10-6 and tied for third with Toronto and their Saturday night opponent York three games behind second place Ottawa. Queen's on Friday night meets a desperate Laurentian team that currently sits six points back of the sixth and final playoff spot in the East currently held by the Ryerson Rams. Laurentian's struggles seem to be associated with their problems on the boards. The Voyageurs are last in the OUA in rebounding margin at minus 5.19 while the Gaels sit in 10th at minus 1.75. In addition, in all of Laurentian's 13 losses their opponent has outrebounded them. The Queen's Golden Gaels defeated Laurentian January 6th 76-66 behind 20 points from Mitch Leger and 18 points from Baris Ondul. In that game Gael guard Ryan Hairsine was not in the lineup due to injury but #33 is back and last weekend tied a regular season high with 20 points Saturday night in a 76-67 victory over Ryerson. Hairsine is second in three point shooting in the OUA at almost 59%. Saturday night the Gaels face the veteran laden York Lions in a possible playoff preview at the Tait McKenzie Gym in Toronto. York blasted the #1 ranked and four time defending league champion Carleton Ravens 95-81 Saturday night, a game the Lions led by a staggering 61-22 score at halftime. The Lions are led by fifth year players Dan Eves and Jordan Foebel. Eves is second in the league in scoring averaging over 19 points a game while the 6'10 Foebel is fourth in the OUA in rebounding (8.44 rpg) and tied for second in blocks (1.81 bpg). Game times Friday night at the Ben Avery Gym in Sudbury is 6pm (women) and 8pm (men) with the same times on Saturday night in Toronto. The Gaels return home next weekend to face the Carleton Ravens Friday February 9th and the Ottawa Gee Gees Saturday February 10th.

Big Crowds Expected This Weekend For Gaels Basketball Games
The women's game Friday night should go a long way in deciding second place in the OUA East. The Gaels currently hold that spot with a record of 10-5 with Toronto in fourth at 8-7 and Laurentian in between them at 9-6. On January 13th in Toronto, the Varsity Blues defeated Queen's 73-59 ending the Gaels three game winning streak. In that game Queen's started slowly being outscored 21-12 in the first quarter and ended just as poorly being outscored 21-13. Gael Sarah Barnes led all scorers with 19 points with teammate Claire Meadows adding 16. For Toronto Christine Cho scored 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Alaine Hutton and Laila Bellony both had 12 points and Amanda Van Leeuwen chipped in with 11 points. The game will be a matchup of Toronto's high scoring offence, 4th in the OUA (71 ppg), against the Gaels strong scoring defence, 5th in the OUA (59.47). The Blues are second in the league in steals averaging a little over 12 a game while Queen's is third in the country in three point shooting at 39.6%. On Saturday night the women and men face a pair of Ryerson Rams' teams that are fighting for a playoff spot. The Ryerson men's team is 5-9 and currently sits in the sixth and final playoff spot two games up on Laurentian. The Rams are led by the Bakovic brothers Ivan and Boris from Toronto. Boris a rookie is averaging a double double with 18.08 ppg and 10.5 rpg. With Boris and Gael freshman Mitch Leger on the court, fans will get to see arguably the top two rookies in the CIS. Leger who did not play last Saturday in the 77-60 loss to Carleton due to suspected appendicitis is fine and expected to dress this weekend. When the two teams met January 12th in Toronto the Gaels easily won 71-54 as Boris Bakovic was held to 6 points on 2-9 shooting. The Ryerson women's team has won just one game entering the weekend, yet still are only two games back of a playoff spot in the OUA East. In their earlier meeting in Toronto the Gaels won 73-58 behind 18 points from Claire Meadows and 16 points from Anne Murphy. Queen's also badly outrebounded the Rams 35-22 and made 6 of their 9 three point shots. Lisa Goldring leads Ryerson in scoring at 12.4ppg. Friday and Saturday night's games in the Queen's Bartlett Gym will tip off at 6pm with the women followed at 8pm with the men. Women's Basketball Hammers Carleton 68-54

Basketball Travels To Ottawa This Weekend
For the men, the trip to Ottawa will be a chance to see if they are ready to challenge for elite status in the OUA East division. The Gaels after Saturday night's loss at Toronto are now 8-4 tied for third place and two games back of the second place Ottawa Gee Gees. The fifth ranked Gee Gees lost the first game of the New Year in Toronto to the York Lions. Ottawa enters the week as the third highest scoring team in the OUA yet they only have one player, Josh Gibson-Bascombe at 15.25 ppg, in the top 20. The game will be a meeting between last year's league rookie of the year in Gibson-Bascombe and the favourite for this year's honours in Gaels forward Mitch Leger. Leger had double digit scoring in both games last weekend and currently sits 11th in scoring (16.08), 7th in rebounding (7.42) and fourth in free throw shooting (83%). Against Ottawa, Queen's will face one of the better defensive teams in the country led by Gibson-Bascombe and Jermaine Campbell who are first and fifth in steals in the OUA with 3.25 and 1.89 respectively. Also this weekend a renewal of sibling rivalry at its best takes place with Carleton coach Dave Smart leading his four time national champion Ravens against older brother Rob Smart and his Tricolour squad. The Ravens are 12-0 and have won their OUA games this year by a total of 169 points. Carleton is led by reigning CIS Player of the Year Osvaldo Jeanty who is fourth in the league in scoring averaging 18.42 ppg. Two other Ravens are in the top 20 with Aaron Doornekamp 18th (14.42) and Jean-Emmanuel Jean-Marie 19th (18.27). This game could come down to three point shooting where the Gaels are the third best in the league and Carleton is seventh in three point defense. Both teams are also stingy against their opponents with Queen's leading the OUA in field goal defense (37.3) and Carleton sitting at sixth (40.4). The games will tip off at 6pm both nights with the women's matchup followed by the men at 8pm. On Saturday night the games at Carleton's Ravens Nest will be televised on Rogers Television channel 22 in Ottawa starting at 8pm with live coverage of the men's game followed by the women's game tape delayed. Queen's returns back to the Bartlett Gym January 26/27 against the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. Women's Basketball Loses 73-59 At Toronto

Men's and Women's Basketball Take to The Road
On the women's side, the Gaels will be facing one of the teams they are battling with for second place in the OUA East when they play the Varsity Blues Saturday night. The Gaels who are 7-4 are just a game up on the third place Blues and two games up on fourth place Laurentian. Queen's veteran Claire Meadows the team's scoring leader was held to single digits in each of last weekend's games and as a result will be looking to bounce back. Thanks to Jessica Selinger's 30 points last Saturday the Gaels were able to beat Laurentian 65-62 in overtime and move her into second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game. In Toronto the Gaels will face a team with five players over six feet tall led by Christine Cho who averages 13 points a game and close to six rebounds a game. Blues guard Alaine Hutton leads the team in scoring (14.6ppg) while logging almost 30 minutes a game. Against Ryerson on Friday night the Tricolour will play a struggling Rams team that has yet to win a game. Lisa Goldring a rookie out of Burlington, leads Ryerson in scoring at 12.2 ppg while playing over thirty minutes a game. Game times are 6pm (women) and 8pm (men) both Friday and Saturday in Toronto. The Gaels are on the road again next weekend when they go to the Nation's Capital to play Carleton and Ottawa Universities. Queen's return home January 26th when they host the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and January 27th against the Ryerson Rams. Women's Basketball Wins 65-62 (OT) Over Laurentian
