Mitchell's older brother Simon was also one of two Gaels who earned an OUA East Second Team All-Star selection after averaging 12.2 points per game this season. The fourth-year guard scored a season high 29-points on January 19 against the University of Toronto and this all-star selection is the second of his career. Kingston's Mitch Leger was the other Gael named as an OUA East Second Team All-Star. The Frontenac Secondary School graduate led the Gaels in scoring 17.5 points per game and also averaged 8.2 rebounds per game this season. Leger finished in the top ten of the OUA for both scoring and rebounding and he follows up his rookie year where he was selected to the OUA East All-Rookie team. The OUA's announcement saw four Gaels recognized, the most for any other school. Carleton had three selections to the All-Star and All-Rookie team while Toronto and Ottawa each had two selections. This season the Gaels finished with a 14-8 record which placed them fourth in the OUA East Division. The Gaels playoff-run ended just weeks ago when they lost to five-time defending champion Carlton in Ottawa. 2007-08 OUA ALL-STARS AND MAJOR AWARD WINNERS - Presented by Wilson Sports Equipment of Canada PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Basketball (M): Gaels Playoff March Ends 96-44 at Carleton Ottawa (February 23, 2008) - The Queen's Golden Gaels found out what separates the defending national champion Carleton Ravens in the playoffs from everyone else as the Ottawa school beat the Tricolour 96-44 Saturday night in the OUA East Semi-Finals. The Gaels who trailed by just three and four points at halftime of their two regular season games with Carleton were down by 24 at the intermission Saturday as the CIS No. 1 ranked Ravens played arguably their best game of the season. The Ravens took it to the Gaels right from the opening tap scoring the first seven points on two foul shots and a jumper by Aaron Dornekamp of Odessa, Ont. sandwiched around a Ryan Bell of Ottawa three pointer. Queen's did not score till a Jon Ogden of Plainfield, Ont. three point shot with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter. After Nick Didonato of Sault Ste. Marie hit a three pointer to pull Queen's to 10-6, the host Ravens ran off 16 of the 21 points scored the rest of the quarter, punctuated by an Elliot Thompson (Fredericton, N.B.) three point shot from in front of the Gaels bench as the quarter ended. The 15-point lead Carleton held to start the second quarter was quickly increased on their first possession as Rob Saunders of Kingston, Ont. hit his first of five three point shots in the game. The Ravens continued to force the young Gaels into tough offensive possessions and then score points at the other end, tallying 27 points in the quarter to lead 53-29 at halftime. The first half was summed up by a possession in the last two minutes when Gaels rookie Tim Boyle of Belleville, Ont. missed a layup and off the miss Carleton's Daron Leonard of London, Ont. scored a layup at the Queen's end plus was fouled to complete the three point play. In the third quarter the defending national champions did not let their foot off the gas pedal as they scored 10 of the first 12 points punctuated by a Dornekamp three point shot. Saunders would hit two more three point bombs and by the end of the period Queen's was trailing 79-36. For the Gaels who had six first year players average 20 minutes a game this season, fourth year guard Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. was the only one to score in double figures. In what may have been his last game at Queen's, Mitchell scored 13 points while second year team leading scorer Mitch Leger was held to just five points. Carleton was led by their veteran threesome of Saunders and Stu Turnbull of Kingston, Ont. who both had 17 points and Dornekamp who scored 14. The Ravens shot almost 50% from behind the three point line Basketball (M): Gaels Win First Home Playoff Game 75-57 Over York
The Gaels scored the opening basket 50 seconds into the game on a layup by Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. and Queen's would never trail. York tied the game at five and were down 10-9 midway through the first quarter, but the Gaels went on a 9-5 run to close the period behind two layups from rookie Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont. to lead 19-14 after 10 minutes. In the second quarter Queen's clamped down defensively, holding the Lions without a point for the first 4:40, but the Gaels could only score four points during that time to lead 23-14. After a three point shot by York's Dalton Olinoski of Georgetown, Ont., Queen's proceeded to score 16 of the next 22 points to lead 39-23 with 37 seconds left after a steal and layup by point guard Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey. The Lions hit back to back threes to close the half and trail just 39-29 at the break. In the third quarter, York continued to struggle against the tough Queen's defense, scoring just nine points in the quarter. At the other end, the Gaels were scoring almost at will and when Jon Ogden of Plainfield, Ont. hit his second straight layup with 2:28 remaining, Queen's led 51-35. Ogden hit a three point shot with 15 seconds left in the period and the Gaels led heading into the fourth 56-38. In the fourth quarter, Queen's second year star Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. hit seven straight points in the first two minutes as the Gaels maintained their 18 point lead. Despite some great shooting by York guard Tut Roach, the Gaels were able to build their lead as high 27 on an Ondul jump shot as Queen's coasted to their first home playoff win in recent memory. Overall Queen's was led by Leger who scored a team high 20 points and Simon Mitchell who chipped in with 18. The Gaels outrebounded the taller Lions 36-27 and held the Toronto school to just 34% shooting from the floor including eight for 30 from outside the three point line. For York Tut Roach led all scorers with 25 points and Amde Evans added 13 as the Lions finish the season 7-16. Next up for Queen's will be the five time defending national champion Carleton Ravens this Saturday, February 23rd in Ottawa. The OUA East semi final at the Ravens Nest will tip off at 8pm. Basketball (M): Gaels Win Regular Season Finale 75-53
Queen's was sluggish to start the game, not scoring until 2:10 in when Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. put back his own miss. The basket made it 4-2 and the Gaels proceeded to score 16 of the next 22 points to lead 18-10 with 3:10 left in the first. Neither team would score another point the remainder of the quarter, and heading into the second period the lead was still eight. The Gaels came out shooting the lights out in the second, making eight three point shots in the period. The Gaels held RMC without a point in the second for three minutes and without a made field goal until there was 40 seconds remaining in the half. The third quarter was a defensive struggle with RMC outscoring Queen's 13-12 but still trailing 60-32 heading into the fourth. In the final quarter the Gaels seemed to lose their intensity and RMC took advantage. The Paladins had their best offensive quarter of the game behind 14 points from David Duizer of Amherst, N.S. The Gaels had all 11 players that dressed score, led by Travis Mitchell of Navan with 13 points and Jon Ogden of Plainfield, Ont. with 11. Ogden also had eight rebounds and two steals. For RMC, Duizer had a game high 20 points with Nicolas Cooke of Toronto scoring 18 and pulling down 12 rebounds. The Paladins end their season 0-22 while Queen's finishes the regular season 14-8 and will host either Ryerson or York next Wednesday, February 20 in an OUA East quarterfinal. Game time in the Bartlett Gym will be 8pm. Basketball (M): Gaels Close Regular Season on Wednesday Night The Gaels will entertain the winless Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins in the Physical Education Centre (Bartlett Gym) with tip-off set for 6:00pm. Queen’s is coming off a weekend split in Ottawa which saw them upset the No. 6 nationally ranked Gee-Gees 64-48 and then fall 76-63 to the undefeated and five-time national champion Carleton Ravens. In both games on the weekend the outcome was decided in the third quarter. Friday night against Ottawa the Gaels used a 27-13 third quarter to build a 20 point lead and coast to the 16 point victory. The next evening the host Ravens used a 28-13 third quarter to turn a close first half into a 21st straight win. One bright spot in the RMC line up is rookie Nicolas Cooke of Toronto who leads the team in rebounding and blocked shots. Cooke also averages almost 10 points a game while playing over 30 minutes a game. Next week the Gaels will face Ryerson or York in next Wednesday's OUA East quarterfinal. Ryerson needs just one win from their final two games or a loss by York in their final game to lock up the fifth spot and a trip to Kingston. Queen's swept the season series from both York and Ryerson winning by single digits in three of the games. . Basketball (M): Gaels Lose to Undefeated Carleton
The Golden Gaels came out strong, fresh off their double digit victory over Ottawa last night, and grabbed an early lead and held it until late in the second quarter, when Carleton pulled ahead to go into the intermission, leading by 3-points, 33-30. In the first half, the Golden Gaels matched Carleton basket for basket and gave the 5-time CIS National Champions all they could handle. In the second half, the Ravens got hot and Carleton pulled away with a 28-point third quarter to lead by 18 points after three. In the fourth quarter, Queen's fought back and narrowed the Ravens lead to 13, which would be the eventual difference. Baris Ondul, Istanbul, Turkey led the Golden Gaels with a game high 17 points, while Mitch Leger, Kingston, Ont. was the only other Gael in double figures with 11 points. Carleton's Aaron Doornekamp, of Odessa, Ont. and Stuart Turnbull of Kingston, both had team high 16 point performances, while two others also recorded 10 points or more. Queen's will close out the regular season against Royal Military College (RMC) of Canada on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm. Basketball (M): Queen's Upsets Off Sixth Ranked Ottawa 64-48
Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. was Queen's top scorer posting 19 points and 12 rebounds teammate Jon Ogden of Plainfield, Ont. finished with 15 points. After the first half, Queen's held a slim 28-22 lead over the nationally ranked Gee-Gees and blew the game open with strong play and critical shooting from both Leger and Ogden. The Gaels dropped 27 points in the third quarter and held a 55-35 advantage going into the fourth. Queen's settled into a defensive scheme in the final frame dropping nine points while Ottawa posted 13 points. The Gaels earned revenge over Ottawa after a failed comeback attempt on January 29 in Kingston which saw Queen's lose 74-70. Ottawa sits in second place to undefeated Carleton in the OUA East Division while Queen's sits in fourth place with a remote opportunity to overtake the University of Toronto for third place. Queen's record improves to 13-7 and they will take on the Carleton Ravens on Saturday night with the tip-off set for 8:00pm. The Gaels will close out the regular season on Wednesday when they take on Royal Military College (RMC) of Canada at home in the Bartlett Gymnasium. That game is scheduled for 6:00pm. Basketball (M): Gaels Edge York 74-67
Leger also recorded 7 rebounds while York's fourth-year guard Tut Roach finished the evening with 29 points and six steals in a losing effort. The first quarter saw Queen's jump out to a solid lead thanks to a strong defence and an offence that scored quickly and often. After the first quarter had ended the Gaels had doubled the Lions effort and held a 18-9 advantage. In the second, the Lions clawed their way back into the game with York scoring 16 points to the Gaels nine. The half ended with Queen's holding a slight edge at 27-25. Queen's turned up their play a notch in the third quarter and started to roll. After shooting just 30% in the first half, Queen's started to hit more shots and improved to 58% from the field. The Gaels improved their lead in the third 48-39 and set up a fourth quarter which saw York fighting for a comeback. Both teams matched each other shot for shot and York managed to pour in 28 points in an effort to tie the game, but Queen's kept pace and dropped 26 of their own to seal the victory. Queen's has three games remaining and their record sits at 12-7 with 24 points. Queen's has already locked up a playoff position and are four points behind Toronto for third position in the OUA East. The Gaels will visit the Ottawa Gee-Gee's on February 8th with the game slated for tip-off at 8:00pm. Queen's next home game will be on February 13th as they take on the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). That game will mark the conclusion of the regular season for the Gaels. Basketball (M): Queen's Handles Laurentian 81-57
Leger recorded the double-double by dropping 24 points and finishing with 12 rebounds. Travis Mitchell of Navan, Ont. finished second on the team in points with 17 while going 3-for-3 from behind the three-point line. The first quarter saw the Gaels take the lead as they registered 19 points, while the Voyageurs kept it close with 14 points of their own. The second quarter was where the Gaels stepped up their game and scored 21 points to the Voyageurs' 13. This gave the Golden Gaels a solid 40-27 lead at the half. The third quarter, the Gaels started to roll with Leger's hot shooting with the Gaels extending their lead to 63-40 headed into the fourth frame. Laurentian picked up the pace in the final frame and tried to make a final surge but it was not to be as the Gaels cemented their victory posting 18 more in the final frame to finish 81-57. Overall Queen's shot 50% from the field and 44% from beyond the 3 point mark. Queen's sit comfortably in fourth place of the OUA East and will play the York Lions on Saturday night at home beginning at 8:00pm. The victory over Laurentian gives the Gaels a 11-7 record, while the Voyageurs drop to 3-15. Basketball (M/W): Gaels Try To Bounce Back From Midweek Losses
Friday night the ladies face the division's third place team, Laurentian who are trying to catch Toronto and York for one of the first round playoff byes. Last season the Voyageurs lost out on a first round bye courtesy of a tiebreaker with Queen's and the Gaels used the rest to help them defeat Laurentian in the OUA East semi finals last February. The Sudbury school comes into this weekend with the top scorer in the country with fifth year All Canadian guard Cassandra Carpenter. Carpenter of Kanata, Ont. is the only player in the CIS averaging 20 points or more this season (20.8) and scores almost half her points from the free throw line. She is 109 for 157 from the charity stripe and one of two players in Canada that have attempted more than 89 free throws this season, with the University of Calgary's Michelle Wilson of Red Deer, Alta. having shot 109 from the line. The following night Queen's takes on the East division's defending champion York Lions who won last year's title on home court over the Gaels February 24th. This season York has won eight of their last nine since a 64-62 loss at Laurier December 1st. The only loss during that span was at Laurentian in a game where Lions fourth year star Laura McCallum of Paris, Ont. was injured. The Toronto school's last game was January 26th against the Toronto Varsity Blues and without McCallum the Lions were able to hang for a 73-70 victory despite being outscored 34-15 in the fourth quarter. McCallum scored the 1000th point of her career in a 68-52 win over the Gaels earlier this month at York. The Gaels enter the weekend in fourth place but just four points ahead of fifth place Carleton who they play to close the season February 9th in Ottawa. For the men their two games could have a huge bearing on who their opponent could be in the playoffs. The Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions enter the weekend two points apart for the sixth and final postseason berth in the OUA East but they are also right on the heels of fifth place Ryerson. The Gaels went to Sudbury to face Laurentian, January 12th and won easily 87-48 as Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. scored a team high 21 points and the Mitchell brothers Simon and Travis of Navan, Ont. combined to score 30. Queen's led the game 46-22 at halftime and built the advantage to 27 points heading into the fourth quarter. The night before playing in Sudbury, the Gaels got some revenge against York in Toronto for the Lions eliminating Queen's in last season's quarterfinals, defeating the host Lions 78-56. Simon Mitchell scored a team high 22 points in the game with Leger adding 20. The Gaels led 60-39 heading into the fourth quarter and shot almost 50% from the floor. Gaels fourth year guard Simon Mitchell is on a roll scoring 20 or more points in three of his last seven games and is averaging 17.2 over that three week span. Tuesday in the loss to Ottawa, Mitchell hit four from beyond the three point line giving him 33 on the season, tenth best in the OUA. The other Mitchell brother, rookie Travis, has been playing better offensively as well. In his last three games he has scored in double figures in each, highlighted by a 20 point performance January 25th against the defending national champion Carleton Ravens. Included in the season high total was five for seven shooting from long distance. The Gaels enter the weekend in fourth needing just one win or one Ryerson loss to lock up a home court quarterfinal game which will take place Wednesday, February 20th. The games Friday and Saturday nights get underway at 6pm with the women's matchup followed at 8pm by the men. Get their early as the Bartlett Gym is filling up fast for Gaels sports. The push to the playoffs starts this weekend. Slow Start Dooms Gaels In 74-70 Loss To Ottawa
The Gee Gees got off to a great start at the Bartlett Gym by running out to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter. The run was punctuated by two dunks from centre Dax Dessureault of Embrun, Ont. as Ottawa led 20-7 by the end of the opening period. In the second the Gaels feeding off another loud, boisterous crowd in the Bartlett closed to within a point with 1:30 left in the half. Simon Mitchell fed Mitch Leger of Kingston for a layup, Leger followed with two free throws and Mitchell fed Tim Boyle of Belleville for another layup to make the score 32-31 Ottawa. The Gee Gees went into halftime up three when Justin Bell of Mississauga, Ont. hit a shot before the buzzer. To start the second half the visitors again jumped out on the Gaels with nine straight points again highlighted by a Dessureault dunk. The Gaels closed to 49-45 with 1:32 left in the third quarter as Simon Mitchell hit a three point play, a three point shot and Boyle and the younger Mitchell Travis hit baskets. However, the Gee Gees closed the half with five straight points to lead 54-45 heading into the fourth quarter. Late in the fourth quarter Ottawa built their lead to 11 on a three point shot by Josh Gibson Bascombe of Toronto as the shot clock expired. The Gaels made four three point shots in the last minute to close to 73-70 with 3.1 seconds left and fouled David Lebentowicz of Richmond Hill, Ont. The fourth year Gee Gee forward missed both free throws but his teammate Sean Peter of Ottawa beat the Gaels to the offensive rebound and made one foul shot to salt the game. Peter said the rebound was just a matter of extra effort. "I was trying to go after the ball. I just anticipated a miss and you have to always be aware that it might not go in, so you keep going after the ball". He added the last minute was tougher than expected, "Simon Mitchell hit a couple of big threes from far out making it interesting but we will take the win anyway we can get it, especially on the road". Leading the Gaels was Simon Mitchell with a game high 21, Mitch Leger added 13 with Ogden and Travis Mitchell both scoring 10. The loss drops Queen's to 10-7 but keeps them in fourth 10 points ahead of Ryerson. The Gaels next game is Friday, February 1st at 8pm against the Laurentian Voyageurs in the Bartlett Gym. Gaels Blowout RMC 81-49
The Gaels played stifling defence in the first half holding the Paladins to just 11 points in each of the first two quarters and building a 43-22 halftime lead. In the third quarter Queen's continued to push the pedal and outscored RMC 24-13 to lead 67-35 heading into the fourth. Queen's rookie Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont. scored a season high 17 points, hitting five of the eight shots that he attempted. The Gaels had four other players score in double digits including Mitch Leger of Kingston scoring 13, Travis Mitchell of Navan, Ont. added 12 along with Rob Shaw of Toronto and Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. both tallying 10 points. Queen's dominated the glass out rebounding the Paladins 43-29 and held their cross town rivals to 22% shooting from the field for the game. The Gaels improve to 10-6 to sit in fourth place of the OUA East six points back of the second place Ottawa Gee Gees and Toronto Varsity Blues. Queen's hosts Ottawa this Tuesday, January 29th at the Bartlett Gym starting at 8pm. Basketball (M): Gaels Lose 71-58 To Carleton
Carleton trailed Queen's by a point 16-15 after a quarter and after baskets by Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. and Mitch Leger of Kingston the Gaels were ahead 22-20 with 5:25 remaining in the second. Ravens forwrd Aaron Doornekamp of Odessa, Ont. hit back to back threes to make it 26-22 for the visitors with 4:39 left. The Gaels closed to 31-30 ith 1:19 left in the half on a Travis Mitchell (Navan) three but Mike Kenny of Ottawa hit a three 40 seconds later to send Carleton into the locker room ahead 34-30. In the third the national champions clamped down with their defence and built their lead to 45-32 on a Doornekamp layup and foul shot with 5:39 left. Former Gael and now Raven Neal Dawson of Orleans took a pass and dunked with 20 seconds left in the quarter as Carleton led 52-43 heading into the fourth. In the final quarter Queen's made a run trailing 61-48 with six minutes left on a layup and three point shot from Travis Mitchell and a three pointer from Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. that made the score 61-56 with 4:10 left forcing Carleton to call timeout. After the timeout the Gaels forced a Raven turnover but Leger missed a three point shot and on the ensuing Carleton possession Doornekamp found an open Bell for a three point shot that he hit to balloon the lead to eight. Queen's would score just two more points and the Ravens would salt away the win with a layup by Stu Turnbull of Kingston and one last Bell three point bomb to produce the 71-58 final. After the game Carleton Head Coach Dave Smart tonight's game shows how tough the OUA East division is on a nightly basis. "Getting a win against a team like Queen's is a good win. People take for granted how difficult it is to beat a Queen's. I do not think everyone gives enough credit to an opponent like the Gaels.". Queen's fourth year guard Simon Mitchell felt tonight's game shows them they can play with the best in Canada. "It would have been nice to upset the top team in the country but with how many rookies we play this has to be good for their confidence.". Gaels head coach Rob Smart said though he does not take solace in moral victories there were some positives from the loss. "I think what was good was that our young kids played very well and that is a good sign. They are playing a lot of minutes and they are very confortable playing in this league but it still is not easy to lose.". Leading the way for Queen's was Travis Mitchell with 20 points including five three pointers. Leger added 12 for the Gaels and Simon Mitchell scored 11 as the team falls to 9-6 with a game at RMC on the schedule tomorrow night at 8pm. For Carleton, Bell led all scorers with 21 including six three point shots and Doornekamp added 18. The Ravens improve to 15-0 and next face second place tomorrow at Scotiabank Place in the Nation's Capital at 8pm. Basketball (M): Gaels In Tough Against Ravens on Friday
The Ravens who have yet to lose to the Gaels during their five year title run, enter the game as the only undefeated team in the county with a 14-0 record. They sit five games ahead of Queen's who sit in fourth in the OUA East with a 9-5 mark. The Gaels will be in tough to upset the undefeated Ravens squad with Carleton rolling over other OUA opponents this season, winning 11 of their games by at least a 16 point difference. The game will be a showcase for local area basketball talent with Gaels second year forward Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont., rookies Jon Ogden and Tim Boyle of Belleville, Ont. as well as Ravens fourth year stars Aaron Doornekamp of Odessa, Ont., Rob Sauders and Stu Turnbull of Kingston. Doornekamp and Leger led their respective teams in scoring with Leger averaging 19 points a game and the Ernestown Secondary School graduate averaging 15. A capacity crowd is expected at the Bartlett Gym inside the Physical Education Centre. Last season the Ravens won both match-ups with the Gaels including a 19 point 74-55 loss in Bartlett in early February. The lady Gaels sit in fourth four points ahead of sixth place Carleton who are only four points away from dropping out of the postseason. In stark contrast to the men's game Queen's has dominated their matchup with the Ravens winning all but two of their games with the Ottawa school since 1990. Last season the Gaels won in Ottawa by 14 but needed a steal by Sarah Barnes of St. Catharines, Ont. with 17 seconds left to give them a four point victory February 9th in Kingston. The women's team will tip off in the Bartlett Gym at 6pm with the men to follow at 8pm. Tickets are expected to sell out and are available by calling 613-533-2500. Queen's answered quickly as they nailed three of their first four three-point attempts. Two minutes into the game the score was 9-7 for Queen's and the game looked to be headed for a shootout. However, soon after, the Gaels began to pull away as they took control inside the paint. They did not allow Laurentian any shots from in close and rebounded well defensively and offensively as they led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter. Queen's opened the second quarter with an 18-0 run which took all of the wind out of the Laurentian defense. They failed to make a field goal until the three minute mark of the quarter. The Gaels continued the quarter on fire building their lead to 46-22 by intermission and ending the half shooting 56% from three-point range. In the second half Queen's continued to control play outscoring the host Voyageurs 21-9 in the fourth quarter and finishing the game shooting 46% (13-28) from behind the three-point line compared to Laurentian's meager 7% 91-14). Queen's next two opponents are the Rams and Varsity Blues next Friday January 18th and Saturday January 19th in Toronto at 8pm both nights. Gaels Pound Lions 78-56
The injury-riddled Gaels (7-4) led 49-25 at the half and rolled to victory, dropping York's record to 1-10 and extending the Lions' losing streak to six games. The Gaels, who dressed just eight players, sit fourth in the tough OUA East just two points behind the Toronto Varsity Blues who lost 86-70 to Carleton on Friday. Four Gaels scored in double figures, including star Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. with 20. The Gaels shot an impressive 48.5% from the field. Queen's exacted revenge on York after losing to the Lions in an OUA East quarter-final last year in Toronto. Lions star Tut Ruach of Toronto led York with 21 points, but hit just six of his 20 shots from the field. The Lions shot just 29.7% for the game. Queen's moves North to Sudbury to take on Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday night with tip off scheduled for 8:00pm. Men's Basketball Outlasts Ryerson 79-74
Queen's led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter and built the lead to 37-31 at halftime. The six point lead was established courtesy of two free throws and two layups from Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. In the third quarter the Gaels increased their advantage to 45-36 with 6:57 left when Ryerson switched to a zone defence which gave Queen's trouble in their 70-60 loss to Toronto the night before. This time Queen's was ready and Leger hit a three pointer on the first possession and Mitchell made a steal and drove the length of the court for a layup to make it 50-36. Ryerson closed to 58-52 by the end of the third quarter behind eight points by Boris Bakovic of Toronto and back to back three point shots Sanel Sehic of Toronto and Brandon Krupa of St. Catharines, Ont. In the fourth the Gaels went on a seven point run to go up 68-56 but Ryerson answered that with five straight points to set up the frantic final two minutes. With the Gaels up 76-66 Joseph Imbrogno of Toronto hit a layup and then Luke Staniscia of Pefferlaw, Ont. hit back to back three pointers to make it 76-74 with half a minute remaining. Mitchell brought the ball up the court and found an open Leger outside the three point line and the second year forward nailed the shot. Queen's was led by Leger who scored a game high 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Mitchell added 14 points, seven assists and eight rebounds while Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. chipped in with 10 points. For Ryerson their sensational second year forward Boris Bakovic led the way with 24 points. Luke Staniscia scored 19 points, 14 in the second half with Sanel Sehic scoring 15 and Brandon Krupa adding 10. The Gaels with the win move into sole possession of fourth place with a 6-4 record. The Rams who entered the game two points back of Queen's fall to 4-6 and in fifth place. Queen's is on the road next weekend when they visit York and Laurentian and will not return to play at the Bartlett Gym until Friday January 25th when they host the five time defending national champion Carleton Ravens. Men's Basketball Loses 70-60 To Toronto
In the first half both teams struggled to get clear looks at the basket and went into the intermission tied at 28. Queen's second year forward Mitch Leger of Kingston was the only player to score in double figures in the first 20 minutes, tallying 10 points. The Gaels went on a five point run capped off by a three pointer from Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. to give the hosts a 33-32 lead two minutes into the second half. Leger and Mitchell hit back to back threes 30 seconds apart midway through the third quarter to give Queen's a 43-41 lead. The game turned right after that as Toronto changed defence from man to man to a zone and proceeded to score ten of the final 12 points in the quarter to lead 51-45. Blues head coach Mike Katz said the defensive change was critical to his teams success, "We went to the zone and it seemed to help. We were able to take away layups as a result and we were able to challenge their three point shooting". Queen's assistant coach Duncan Cowan agreed with Katz that the zone caused problems for his young team but said he was more discouraged with how the Gaels reacted to the struggles offensively. "What is frustrating is that while we were having trouble scoring we did not bear down on defence. Sure we shot poorly in the second half but we allowed them to score to easily as well". In the fourth quarter midway through Leger hit two free throws and Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. followed with a three point bomb to close the Toronto lead to two points. The Varsity Blues responded by scoring the next seven points capped by a three point shot by Rob Paris of St. Catharines, Ont. to make the score 62-53 with 2:53 remaining. The Gaels would get no closer and now sport a record of 5-4 while Toronto improves to 7-2. Michael Degiorgio of Toronto, Ont. led all scorers with 22 points with Paris adding 14 and Nick Magalas of Burlington, Ont. tallying 13. For Queen's Leger led the way with 20 points and both Simon Mitchell and Nick DiDonato of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. adding 11 points each. The Gaels host Ryerson tomorrow night January 5th at 8pm in the Bartlett Gym. The Rams defeated RMC Friday night 90-42 to move into a fourth place tie with the Gaels. More Tournament Information BASKETBALL (M): Ondul scores 30 points as Queen's top Lakehead 91-71
Queen's rebounded from a disappointing loss on Friday night to the McMaster Marauders and break for exams holding a 5-3 record. The win puts the Gaels in fourth place of the OUA East division just two points behind the third place Toronto Varsity Blues. Lakehead is now an even 5-5 and sit tied for sixth place in the OUA West division. Ondul recorded 17 points in the first quarter and the Gaels took a 46-36 lead into the half. Lakehead kept it close in the third outscoring the Gaels 23-20 but Queen's poured on 28 points in the final frame while giving up only 10 to change a close game into a lopsided victory. The Gaels' Mitch Leger of Kingston also posted 20 plus points dropping 24 and was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free-throw line. Lakehead's Kirann Posey of Baltimore, MD. poured in 22 points while Warren Thomas of Washington, D.C., recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ondul, a third-year guard with Queen's felt he was due for a big game. "I was off at the beginning of season and it was kind of time... time for me to step up." said Ondul. "We were coming off a tough loss and it was a good time for it. We can build on this and pick it up for next semester." Head coach Rob Smart said Ondul's passing game is what attributed to his high point totals. "The thing that I liked about it was, yeah he scored 30 points, but he made just about every pass he should have made," said Smart. "The points are not nearly as important as distributing the ball and making people cover all over the floor. Once he did that he got a whole bunch of space himself." Smart was happy to go into the break with a win, but attributed the 1-1 weekend split to the team's energy level. "We played with a lot of energy tonight, a lot more than last night. It was the only difference between the two games." The Gaels will return to action following the exam and holiday break when the Toronto Varsity Blues will visit Queen's on Friday, January 4, 2008 with tip off scheduled for 8:00pm. Men's Basketball Drops 92-81 Decision To McMaster
The Marauders shot the lights out themselves in the third and fourth quarters, making 17 of 27 shots to record their third win of the season. The good shooting made up for some sloppy play by the visitors who turned the ball over 19 times. McMaster was led by Tyrell Vernon of Hamilton, Ont. who scored a game high 24 points. For the Gaels Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. scored a team high 22 points including 12 in the second half. Tim Boyle of Belleville, Ont. chipped in with 16 and Jon Ogden of Belleville added 11. Queen's with the loss drops to 4-3 and will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves tomorrow December 1st at 8pm on Primetime Community Day. Men's Basketball Defeats Waterloo 61-53
Queen's used stifling defense and their usual strong three point shooting to fight off a stubborn Waterloo team. The Gaels held the Warriors to only 31% shooting from the floor while shooting almost 41% from behind the three point line. The Gaels led 25-19 at halftime and built the lead to 41-31 heading into the fourth quarter. Leading the way for the Tricolour was Mitch Leger of Kingston with a double double on 14 points and 11 rebounds and Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. also with 14 points. Queen's is back on home court next weekend when they host the McMaster Marauders Friday November 30th on Coca Cola Athlete of the Term Night and the Lakehead Thunderwolves Saturday December 1st on Primetime Community Day. The Tricolour play the Waterloo Warriors tomorrow night as they conclude their weekend road trip. Basketball (M): Gaels Drop 71-61 Decision to Windsor Lancers
Queen's found themselves down 30-28 after a tight first half and rebounded coming out strong in the third quarter taking a 51-46 lead into the final quarter. Queen's however couldn't sustain the lead as Windsor won the last quarter putting in 25 points while the Gaels only mounted 10 points in the fourth. Queen's rookie Jon Ogden (Plainfield, Ont.) dropped 22 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Gaels. Second year forward Mitch Leger (Kingston, Ont.) struggled from the field but still managed 11 points and 11 rebounds while veteran Simon Mitchell (Navan, Ont. contributed 12 points. The Lancers were led by 5th year guards Ryan Steer of Windsor (21 points, 9 assists) and Kevin Kloostra Chatham, Ont. (22 points, 10 rebounds). With the loss the Gaels record drops to an even .500 having won two games and lost two with just four games played in the 2007-08 season. They currently stand in fourth place tied with Ryerson and are four points back of Ottawa, Carleton and Toronto who share first place in the OUA East. Next week, Queen's will travel to Waterloo, Ont. for two games against Laurier Golden Hawks and the Waterloo Warriors. The Gaels take on Laurier on Friday November 23 and then will challenge the Warriors on Saturday November 24 - both games begin at 8:00pm. Men's Basketball Wins At Western 82-71
Queen's led 45-39 at halftime and then came out gunning in the third quarter building their lead to 68-53 by the start of the final ten minute period. The Gaels used their great long range shooting to give them the win Friday night as they shot 40.5% from three point land while holding Western to just four of 23 for 17.4% from behind the arc. Leading the way for the Gaels was second year forward Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont. who scored 20 points and added 15 of the team's 36 rebounds. Teammate Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. also scored 20 points while Travis Mitchell of Navan added 15 and Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. chipped in with 11 points. Queen's is now 2-1 as they head to #2 nationally ranked Windsor Saturday night for a game with the defending OUA champion Lancers. The Gaels are back in Kingston Friday November 30th when they host the McMaster Marauders at 8pm at the Bartlett Gym. Men's Basketball Loses 67-62 To Guelph Kingston, Ont. (November 10, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels dropped their first OUA game of the season 67-62 at home to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday night in Kingston. The Gaels who struggled in the first half against Brock the night before again fell behind in the first 20 minutes 37-30. They made a run at the Gryphons numerous times in the second half but could not overtake the visitors. The Gaels shot only five for 23 from behind the three point line and only went to the foul line ten times the entire game. Leading Queen's was Mitch Leger of Kingston with 17 points with Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. scored 13 and Simon Mitchell of Navan, Ont. adding 10. For Guelph Borko Popic of Waterloo, Ont. scored 15 points and teammates Nick Pankerichan of Hamilton, Ont. and Jay Mott of Burlington, Ont. each pumped in 12. Mott was four of six from three point land. The Gaels are on the road the next two weekends starting next Friday night November 16th at Western and the following night November 17th at defending OUA champion Windsor. Men's Basketball Defeats Brock 72-66
Queen's struggled in the first half losing both quarters 19-14 and trailing at the break 38-28. In the third quarter the Gaels came out firing and shot 54.8% in the second half while holding the Badgers to 35.6% from the field. Gaels head coach Rob Smart says at halftime he told the team they had to stop giving the Badgers open shots. "I think you beat teams by defending and I don't know how many points they had in the third quarter (8) but it was not many and that is how you beat teams, your offence comes from good defence". Queen's rookie Jon Ogden of Belleville, Ont. keyed the comeback scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the second half. For the game Ogden finished with a team high 17 points with fellow freshman Nick DiDonato of Sault Ste. Marie who battled foul trouble all night scoring all eight of his points in the second half. Smart says the first year players have certainly not played like rookies so far this season. "They are a key reason to why we are number nine in Canada. They do not act like first year kids and they play with poise. They were all exceptional tonight". Gaels are back on the court tomorrow night November 10th when they host the Guelph Gryphons at 8pm in the Bartlett Gym. Gaels Host Ottawa Schools And "Meet and Greet Social"
The men's basketball team hosts two nationally ranked teams in the #3 Carleton Ravens, the four time defending national champions, and the #9 Ottawa Gee Gees. Saturday against the Gee Gees the Gaels face a team they upset January 19th in the Nation's Capital 65-64 on a Mitch Leger foul shot with 0.5 seconds left in the game. Since that game the Gee Gees have won four of five beating Carleton and York but losing on Friday night by two points to the Toronto Varsity Blues. In those five games second year Gee Gee guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe has spearheaded their resurgence averaging 14 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists. Third year guard Sean Peter is also playing well over that five game span averaging almost 14 points a game with teammate Alex McLeod having scored 33 points on the weekend in a 2 point loss to Toronto and 13 point win over Ryerson. Ottawa is in second place in the OUA and can clinch that spot and a first round playoff bye with a win this weekend. Speaking of clinching the Carleton Ravens can wrap up first in the OUA with a win Friday night against the Gaels despite dropping two games in less than two weeks. The Ravens pounded the Gaels 77-60 in Ottawa on January 20th and have only lost 6 times to Queen's in 31 games since 1990. Osvaldo Jeanty last year's CIS Player of the Year leads the Ravens in scoring with 17.22 ppg. Carleton comes to town with a Kingston area connection starting with their Head Coach Dave Smart a former star player with the Queen's Golden Gaels and Napanee native. On the Ravens roster they have Aaron Doornekamp (Ernestown High School), Stu Turnbull (Frontenac High School) and Rob Saunders (Frontenac High School) who all in their third year have lost just 4 games in their career. The Gaels are hoping to end a slide that has seen them lose two straight and four of their last six dropping them into fifth in the OUA two points back of fourth place Toronto. Queen's lost 66-56 at Laurentian Friday night and 84-77 at York the following night. Rookie Mitch Leger seems to have gotten back on track scoring 31 points in the weekend defeats. The Gaels continue to lead the country in free throw shooting hitting 77.5 % from the line. The women's basketball team hosts the same two Ottawa schools with a first round playoff bye within reach. The Gaels 12-7 are in third in the OUA two points back of the Laurentian Voyageurs but with the tiebreaker in their favour. Queen's lost both of their games on the weekend 57-56 to Laurentian and 55-42 to first place York. When the Gaels faced Ottawa and Carleton in January they beat both schools 50-45 and 68-54 respectively. Fifth year star Claire Meadows continues to roll for Queen's scoring 18 points on Saturday in the loss to York, giving her 934 in her career as she tries to reach the 1000 point plateau. Teammate Jessica Selinger continues to be the best in Canada from the free throw line, shooting at a 92.9 % clip, making 52 of her 56 attempts. The Ottawa Gee Gees come into Saturday's game off a two game weekend sweep of Ryerson and Toronto. Their 61-52 victory over the Varsity Blues was only Ottawa's sixth in 31 meetings since 1990 with the Toronto school. Katie Laurie leads the Gee Gees averaging 8.9 ppg and a team high 7.1 rpg. On Friday night a capacity crowd is expected at the Bartlett Gym with the games both nights tipping off at 6pm Friday and Saturday night with the women's game and the men following at 8pm. Advance tickets are available for the Men's and Women's Basketball games this weekend. They may be purchased in person at the Physical Education center at 69 Union Street, between 10:00 am and 4:30 pm. They can also be purchased over the phone by calling (613) 533-6000 x 74715, during the same hours. After the games Friday night everyone is invited to "Meet the Gaels " at the Ale House Canteen. Gaels Basketball Travels To Sudbury and Toronto This Weekend Kingston, ON (January 29, 2007) - The Queen's Golden Gaels men's and women's basketball teams go into this weekend's roadtrip with a chance to gain home court for the playoffs. The women's team has won four in a row and sits in second place in the OUA East with a record of 12-5. This Friday and Saturday the Gaels face the two teams sandwiched around them in the standings. First up the third place Laurentian Voyageurs led by fourth year Kanata native Cassandra Carpenter who is second in the OUA and fourth in the country in scoring averaging 21.40 ppg. Carpenter scored 17 points January 6th in a 65-62 (OT) loss to the Gaels who got 30 points from Jessica Selinger. Voyageurs guard Katie Goggins scored a team high 21 points in the January 6th loss which is 12 above her season average. The next night Queen's faces the only team ahead of them in the standings the 15-2 York Lions. When the two teams played January 5th in Kingston the Lions dominated right from the opening tip racing out to a 35-16 lead by halftime and coasting to a 66-45 win. The Lions and Gaels are two of the best defensive teams in the league with York in second giving up 55.76 ppg and the Queen's in third giving up 58.41 ppg. Queen's will try and take advantage of their three point shooting which is best in the division against a York three point defence that sits in 12th in the OUA. Claire Meadows and Jessica Selinger continue to lead the Gaels averaging 14 and 12 ppg respectively. Last weekend Meadows scored 19 and 10 points in the wins over Toronto and Ryerson with Selinger tallying 22 and 14 in those games. Selinger in Friday night's win over Toronto was 14 for 15 from the foul line making her 46 for 50 for the regular season good for top spot in the OUA and second in Canada behind Karine Bibeau of Laval. The men face a must win weekend if they hope to get home court for a playoff game this season. The Gaels are 10-6 and tied for third with Toronto and their Saturday night opponent York three games behind second place Ottawa. Queen's on Friday night meets a desperate Laurentian team that currently sits six points back of the sixth and final playoff spot in the East currently held by the Ryerson Rams. Laurentian's struggles seem to be associated with their problems on the boards. The Voyageurs are last in the OUA in rebounding margin at minus 5.19 while the Gaels sit in 10th at minus 1.75. In addition, in all of Laurentian's 13 losses their opponent has outrebounded them. The Queen's Golden Gaels defeated Laurentian January 6th 76-66 behind 20 points from Mitch Leger and 18 points from Baris Ondul. In that game Gael guard Ryan Hairsine was not in the lineup due to injury but #33 is back and last weekend tied a regular season high with 20 points Saturday night in a 76-67 victory over Ryerson. Hairsine is second in three point shooting in the OUA at almost 59%. Saturday night the Gaels face the veteran laden York Lions in a possible playoff preview at the Tait McKenzie Gym in Toronto. York blasted the #1 ranked and four time defending league champion Carleton Ravens 95-81 Saturday night, a game the Lions led by a staggering 61-22 score at halftime. The Lions are led by fifth year players Dan Eves and Jordan Foebel. Eves is second in the league in scoring averaging over 19 points a game while the 6'10 Foebel is fourth in the OUA in rebounding (8.44 rpg) and tied for second in blocks (1.81 bpg). Game times Friday night at the Ben Avery Gym in Sudbury is 6pm (women) and 8pm (men) with the same times on Saturday night in Toronto. The Gaels return home next weekend to face the Carleton Ravens Friday February 9th and the Ottawa Gee Gees Saturday February 10th.

The women's game Friday night should go a long way in deciding second place in the OUA East. The Gaels currently hold that spot with a record of 10-5 with Toronto in fourth at 8-7 and Laurentian in between them at 9-6. On January 13th in Toronto, the Varsity Blues defeated Queen's 73-59 ending the Gaels three game winning streak. In that game Queen's started slowly being outscored 21-12 in the first quarter and ended just as poorly being outscored 21-13. Gael Sarah Barnes led all scorers with 19 points with teammate Claire Meadows adding 16. For Toronto Christine Cho scored 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Alaine Hutton and Laila Bellony both had 12 points and Amanda Van Leeuwen chipped in with 11 points. The game will be a matchup of Toronto's high scoring offence, 4th in the OUA (71 ppg), against the Gaels strong scoring defence, 5th in the OUA (59.47). The Blues are second in the league in steals averaging a little over 12 a game while Queen's is third in the country in three point shooting at 39.6%. On Saturday night the women and men face a pair of Ryerson Rams' teams that are fighting for a playoff spot. The Ryerson men's team is 5-9 and currently sits in the sixth and final playoff spot two games up on Laurentian. The Rams are led by the Bakovic brothers Ivan and Boris from Toronto. Boris a rookie is averaging a double double with 18.08 ppg and 10.5 rpg. With Boris and Gael freshman Mitch Leger on the court, fans will get to see arguably the top two rookies in the CIS. Leger who did not play last Saturday in the 77-60 loss to Carleton due to suspected appendicitis is fine and expected to dress this weekend. When the two teams met January 12th in Toronto the Gaels easily won 71-54 as Boris Bakovic was held to 6 points on 2-9 shooting. The Ryerson women's team has won just one game entering the weekend, yet still are only two games back of a playoff spot in the OUA East. In their earlier meeting in Toronto the Gaels won 73-58 behind 18 points from Claire Meadows and 16 points from Anne Murphy. Queen's also badly outrebounded the Rams 35-22 and made 6 of their 9 three point shots. Lisa Goldring leads Ryerson in scoring at 12.4ppg. Friday and Saturday night's games in the Queen's Bartlett Gym will tip off at 6pm with the women followed at 8pm with the men. Men's Basketball Loses 77-60 To Carleton

Basketball Travels To Ottawa This Weekend
For the men, the trip to Ottawa will be a chance to see if they are ready to challenge for elite status in the OUA East division. The Gaels after Saturday night's loss at Toronto are now 8-4 tied for third place and two games back of the second place Ottawa Gee Gees. The fifth ranked Gee Gees lost the first game of the New Year in Toronto to the York Lions. Ottawa enters the week as the third highest scoring team in the OUA yet they only have one player, Josh Gibson-Bascombe at 15.25 ppg, in the top 20. The game will be a meeting between last year's league rookie of the year in Gibson-Bascombe and the favourite for this year's honours in Gaels forward Mitch Leger. Leger had double digit scoring in both games last weekend and currently sits 11th in scoring (16.08), 7th in rebounding (7.42) and fourth in free throw shooting (83%). Against Ottawa, Queen's will face one of the better defensive teams in the country led by Gibson-Bascombe and Jermaine Campbell who are first and fifth in steals in the OUA with 3.25 and 1.89 respectively. Also this weekend a renewal of sibling rivalry at its best takes place with Carleton coach Dave Smart leading his four time national champion Ravens against older brother Rob Smart and his Tricolour squad. The Ravens are 12-0 and have won their OUA games this year by a total of 169 points. Carleton is led by reigning CIS Player of the Year Osvaldo Jeanty who is fourth in the league in scoring averaging 18.42 ppg. Two other Ravens are in the top 20 with Aaron Doornekamp 18th (14.42) and Jean-Emmanuel Jean-Marie 19th (18.27). This game could come down to three point shooting where the Gaels are the third best in the league and Carleton is seventh in three point defense. Both teams are also stingy against their opponents with Queen's leading the OUA in field goal defense (37.3) and Carleton sitting at sixth (40.4). The games will tip off at 6pm both nights with the women's matchup followed by the men at 8pm. On Saturday night the games at Carleton's Ravens Nest will be televised on Rogers Television channel 22 in Ottawa starting at 8pm with live coverage of the men's game followed by the women's game tape delayed. Men's and Women's Basketball Take to The Road
On the women's side, the Gaels will be facing one of the teams they are battling with for second place in the OUA East when they play the Varsity Blues Saturday night. The Gaels who are 7-4 are just a game up on the third place Blues and two games up on fourth place Laurentian. Queen's veteran Claire Meadows the team's scoring leader was held to single digits in each of last weekend's games and as a result will be looking to bounce back. Thanks to Jessica Selinger's 30 points last Saturday the Gaels were able to beat Laurentian 65-62 in overtime and move her into second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game. In Toronto the Gaels will face a team with five players over six feet tall led by Christine Cho who averages 13 points a game and close to six rebounds a game. Blues guard Alaine Hutton leads the team in scoring (14.6ppg) while logging almost 30 minutes a game. Against Ryerson on Friday night the Tricolour will play a struggling Rams team that has yet to win a game. Lisa Goldring a rookie out of Burlington, leads Ryerson in scoring at 12.2 ppg while playing over thirty minutes a game. Game times are 6pm (women) and 8pm (men) both Friday and Saturday in Toronto. The Gaels are on the road again next weekend when they go to the Nation's Capital to play Carleton and Ottawa Universities.
