Athletic Therapy
Athletic Therapy at Queen'sQueen’s has experienced a fascinating development in the area of Athletic Therapy. The history dates back to the pre – 1925 ‘s with a short list of dedicated head trainers such as “Billie” Hughes, “Senator” Jack Powell, Stewart Langdon, “Tabby” Kenneth Gow and presently Dave Ross. The Athletic Therapy profession has changed immensely over the decades, from an individual who work himself up through the ranks performing an number of athletic related duties to earn himself the title of head trainer. In the late 70’s the athletic trainers became a new breed of caregivers, with the introduction of a national certification exam that, once passed, earned the title of “Athletic Therapist”. The modern therapist now posses university degrees and uses sophisticated equipment to aid in the rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The present Athletic Therapy Program at Queen’s is comprised of two certified athletic therapists, and over 30 volunteer “student trainers” at present. This program works out of two clinics located on campus, one located at the main campus, and one located at the West Campus near the stadium. The Athletic Therapy program has the monumental task of providing emergency first aid, assessment and treatment of athletic injuries and prophylactic taping for over 750 athletes in the intercollegiate program at Queen’s. The student trainers are comprised mainly of Physical Education and Physiotherapy students. The Athletic Therapy program provides an environment in which the students can gain valuable practical experience and education in the field of Athletic Therapy, under the supervision of certified Athletic Therapists. This provides a win-win situation for both the student trainers and the varsity athletes. The Athletic Therapy Clinic caters only to athletes on varsity teams. Other students seeking rehabilitation for injuries should seek the help of local health care providers. Trainers 2007-2008
