A Message from Principal Dr. Karen Hitchcock

As you may know, Dr. Janice Deakin, Dean, School of Graduate Studies & Research, and Dr. Bob Crawford, Professor, Computing Science and former Dean of Student Affairs have conducted an extensive review of Queen’s Athletics and Recreation.

Their report, which they have submitted to me, includes recommendations on:

  • The organizational structure and financing of Queen’s Athletics and Recreation
  • Queen’s Campus Recreation and Sports Clubs
  • Queen’s Inter-university Athletics

The report and its recommendations are the product of extensive work and collaboration by Dr. Deakin and Dr. Crawford, who are to be commended for their commitment, effort and creative and thoughtful analysis. The recommendations reflect an integrated approach and a drive for excellence in all Athletics and Recreation programs.

The recommendations also propose significant change in a number of areas, including funding, fees and the number of inter-university athletic teams Queen’s should support.

Because of the importance of this review and the significance of its recommendations, I am inviting feedback on the report, prior to making any final decisions. The consultation process will give all interested parties ample time to provide comments, including opportunities for students to fully engage in the process when they return this fall.

I expect to be in a position to make final decisions on the recommendations by December 31, 2007.

Due to the high priority I have placed on the review and consultation process, Queen’s Athletics and Recreation Chair Leslie Dal Cin will report directly to me during the consultation period.

I’d like to emphasize that no final decisions on the recommendations have been made. I am committed to making final decisions that are fully informed by an open, thorough consultation with all interested parties.

The full report and recommendations can be found at http://www.queensu.ca/athleticsreview. If you would like to provide feedback, I invite you to write to me at khitchcock@post.queensu.ca by November 16th, 2007.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Karen Hitchcock

Input needed on future direction for Athletics & Recreation at Queen’s

Associate Vice-Principal and Dean of Student Affairs Jason Laker is asking the Queen’s community to reflect and provide thoughts on the future direction of Athletics & Recreation at Queen’s. In short, the purpose of the review is to define what the Queen’s community expects of Athletics & Recreation at Queen’s.

Dr. Laker has asked Janice Deakin, Dean, School of Graduate Studies & Research, and Bob Crawford, Professor, Computing Science and former Dean of Student Affairs, to lead the conversation in the form of a review. Their mandate is to examine programs, from interuniversity (varsity) to recreational and fitness, and facilities, funding, leadership, organization and administration as they recommend a direction for Athletics & Recreation at Queen’s into the next decade.

The review is well-timed. The University has just approved its Strategic Plan, and Queen’s most significant upgrades of Athletics & Recreation facilities are underway – the Queen’s Centre, the new Tindall Field and redevelopment of the West Campus fields and stadium.

In particular, this review supports the University strategic goal of enhancing its distinctive environment for learning through a commitment to the highest standards of excellence across all programs and activities – both in and outside the classroom.

Drs. Deakin and Crawford will also consider that among students, personal fitness is a growing priority, that dramatic growth has occurred in intramural sports and recreational clubs and that expectations have increased among interuniversity athletes for facilities, coaching, practice time, and their potential for success.

The competitive environment has also changed with greater emphasis on recruiting using athletic financial awards.

This review continues a strong tradition at Queen’s of maintaining excellence in Athletics & Recreation through reflection and consultation. The Milliken Report (1970), the Williams Report (1998) and the follow-up Cowan Report (1998), the Dryden Report (1997) and the University Council of Athletics (U.C.A.) Athletics and Recreation Program Review (2002) have examined the philosophy, programs, facilities, funding, leadership, organization, administration and purpose of sport at Queen’s.

Drs. Deakin and Crawford will consult with students, faculty, staff, members of university organizations and senior administrators as part of their review. They will present their report to Dr. Laker by March 30, 2007.

People can provide their input in a number of ways. Submissions should consider these questions:

  1. What should be the goals and priorities of Athletics & Recreation at Queen’s?
  2. What are the implications of the commitment to excellence, as stated in the Queen’s Strategic Plan, for Athletics & Recreation at Queen’s?
  3. How would you define excellence:
    a) in our campus recreation program?
    b) in our inter-university program?
  4. How well are the interests of students being met by our current campus recreation (intramurals, recreational clubs, personal fitness) offerings?

Written submissions can be sent by March 16, 2007 to Athletics & Recreation Review:

  • email: ARReview@post.queensu.ca
